Chapter 8

That afternoon Gackt had already decided that he’d talk to You and make him play for him. He wanted to see if You was good enough to sing along side him but he was not sure how the man would react to the news. And then, fate decided to intervene again, well, that is if You’s best friend could be called fate. Gackt wasn’t precisely fond of talking with him again but what the hell, he had to go through with it.

“Hello, Gackt-san, I hope I’m not disturbing you.” Ryosuke said on the other end of the phone.

“Why, not at all. I was actually taking a break. What can I do for you, Nakamura-san?”

“Oh, I just wanted to apologize for yesterday. You told me how awkward you had felt with all the guests. I really had no idea.”

“He did, did he? Well, it’s not as bad as it sounds, I’m just not one with crowds.”

“Yes, before leaving for his job he mentioned that.”

“Oh, I thought today he didn’t go to the shop.”

“Oh, he didn’t. He sometimes plays at a bar close to here. I guess he can’t just stick to only practicing the guitar, sometimes he just gets the urge to play in front of the audience. He goes there then.” Ryosuke replied.

Gackt’s heart jumped a bit. This was the perfect occasion. He asked Ryosuke for the name of the bar not quite caring what the man thought and then brushed him off quite quickly, got into his car and drove to the bar. It was quite a small place, located on an alley, indeed not far from You’s house. From the looks of it it, it wasn’t popular at all so he probably ran no risks of being recognized. He walked straight into the darkness and turned his eyes towards the stage where a band and You were playing. They weren’t especially good. The vocalist was probably too drunk to remember the words, the bassist and the drummer just didn’t seem to click. But You, he was the one Gackt had come to see and he was not disappointed. You was beautiful, even though he made no effort into making himself ore obvious. He just played, his eyes half closed, trying hard to restrain himself to not be the one claiming the stage. It must have been hard, Gackt thought. He was restraining himself and still he was the one to bring the little glue the band had. If not for You’s guitar, improvising all the time, hiding some of the obvious horrible mistakes the others made, they probably would have been greeted with tomatoes by the small public anyway. Yes, You was good, Gackt thought. So he just ordered a drink and waited for the band to stop, not turning his eyes from You’s elegant figure for a minute.

When the band finally stopped, after a few minutes, You came towards the bar ordered a drink and then turned his eyes to the left, only to find a smiling Gackt. To say he was shocked would be an understatement. Gackt actually thought that the man had forgot to breathe for a while.

You asked in a trembling voice.

“What are you doing here?”

“Your friend told me you’d be working here and I’ve come to listen to you play.”

You just smiled bitterly and while talking Gackt could detect hurt and slight anger in his tone.

“You shouldn’t have.” You said.

“Why not?” Gackt in turn asked.

“I didn’t want you to see me like this, embarrassing myself. I can’t believe Ryosuke told you. What was he thinking?”

I have a pretty good idea what he was thinking. Gackt thought.

“Listen, You, you didn’t embarrass yourself at all. You’re good, I could tell.”

“You don’t need to lie.”, You replied, anger lining his every word. I know how they sound. I hate myself for coming here to play like this but I don’t have another choice. I hate the fact that I can’t even get these drunks to listen to a bit of what we’re playing…”

“And you hate that you have to hold yourself back, don’t you?” Gackt added.

You just gasped and asked.

“How did you…?”

“It’s easy to tell You, by someone who knows a little bit about music.” Gackt replied. “It’s true that the band sucks. But I also think you’re damned good and in fact I did come here with a reason. I wanted to see you play, to see if it’s worth convincing you of playing by my side. I’m in need of a good guitarist right now.” Gackt tried to sound as convincing a possible.

“I’m sorry, Gackt-san, but I’m surely not the one you’re looking for. And I know you think of yourself as my friend or sort of but you really have no obligation to make me feel better.”

“Listen, You, it makes me sad that you don’t believe me and it makes me angry that you don’t believe in you. So here’s what I can do. You can have an audition with my other guitarist and best friend. I’ve told him nothing about you. He has no idea we know each other so he won’t try to spare your feelings. If you’re good, he’ll tell you. If you’re bad, he’ll tell you. Do you accept?”

“I guess…” You replied weekly.

“Perfect. We can go right now.”

“What, now?” You almost screamed.

“Do you have something else to do?” Gackt asked a bit disappointed.

“Well, no, but shouldn’t I at least get a bit prepared?” You asked

“No, you’re perfect as you are. Come on now.”

And that was the end of the argument. You was practically pushed into Gackt’s car, driven away to the studio. He was so nervous when he walked in and even more nervous when he met ChaCha.

“ChaCha, I want you to see if he’s fitted to be our guitarist.” Gackt said.

You just felt himself becoming smaller at that. He just wanted to run away. ChaCha seemed like a nice guy but he also had this aura about him…

“Sure. I presume you know each other quite well, but don’t worry, You-san, I’ll be quite critical. This is my band after all.”

Gackt just made a face at that and said:

“Well, it’s my band actually but…”

ChaCha just glared at him and then told You:

“Would you mind starting right away? I just want you to go into that room and start playing. Anything is fine.”

You decided that ChaCha was demanding and he knew that Gackt hadn’t lied about him receiving an honest evaluation from the man. So he just did as he was told. He was really nervous. But he started playing one of the parts he had learned for the band. And he stopped abruptly when he heard ChaCha’s voice through the speaker.

“Listen, You-san. I don’t want you to be holding back. Just give it your everything, ok?”

You understood. This was his chance. After this, he’d definitely know just what level his music was on. If he could even call it music. So he decided to do his best, no matter the outcome, enjoy the feeling of being in a recording studio and of someone actually watching him, intently. He knew that that was something he needed to be grateful for and he was grateful to Gackt.

So while You was playing, outside, ChaCha and Gackt were listening. Gackt just watched You intently, seeing him opening up, unleashing his guitar. It was a stunning view. It was as if You had become another person. He looked exactly like a fallen angel, a music drugged angel. And Gackt loved it. And Gackt had to admit to himself that he had probably begun to fall in love. And quite suddenly, while listening to You, that didn’t seem such a bad thing anymore. So Gackt just smirked when ChaCha turned around and said:

“I don’t know where you found him but I’m glad you did. He is great and I’m sure you know that.”

A few minutes later, You came out of the recording room, quite anxious to hear the results. He was a bit disappointed not to find Gackt there, dreading the reason why. He just waited for ChaCha to speak. And indeed ChaCha did.

“Welcome to the band. I’m glad Gackt found you. You’re great and there shouldn’t be a need for me to be telling you this. At this point, I’d kill Gackt myself if he hadn’t brought you in.”

You couldn’t believe his ears. He was going to make music and not with anyone but with one of the most popular artists in all Japan. With true professionals. He just felt like fainting and when seeing Gackt glide in, a content smile on his face, looking straight into his eyes and sharing the good news, You really felt that for a moment the world slipped from his feet.

“I’ve just informed our manager that we have a new guitarist. We’ll be starting the recording tomorrow. Here’s the sheets. I hope you don’t mind doing a guitar solo from the first time Yoroshiku ne!” Gackt said cheerfully.

You just nodded absently wondering what good he had done in another life to actually deserve this. He couldn’t speak or react in anyway so he just nodded again when Gackt asked them out to celebrate.
