Chapter 57
Reita didn’t understand what Ruki had said. What could he possibly have that would make Aoi trust Ni~ya? He wished the damned bird were there so that he could ask it some more questions, but in Cha’s absence, his only options were to either solve the puzzle alone - considering how much time he had needed and how many clues he had required to save Aoi, that wasn’t a very good idea- or tell Aoi and solve this problem together. Deciding to tell his lover he climbed the stairs and went inside their bedroom. His lover was standing on their bed, looking dejectedly at the starry sky outside.
“I meant to let him die. If you hadn’t come back tonight...” Aoi spoke. “Your feelings for him seem stronger lately and even though we are bonded and I keep touching this medallion, I’m afraid.” Aoi confessed without averting his eyes from the window.
Reita approached his lover and fell on his knees in front of Aoi, wrapping his arms around the other and resting his head on the mishepishu’s knees.
“Our bond cannot be broken, Aoi.” Reita tried, but all he got was a violent reaction from his lover. Aoi had already reached his limits. He was tired and weary and conflicted, all because of someone who was a potential threat. He couldn’t understand Reita, couldn’t understand his willingness to strain their relationship, all so that a stranger could be saved.
Aoi stood up suddenly, unbalancing the tiger who had been kneeling in front of him and while gesticulating broadly and speaking loudly, approached the night-stand, where the ingredients for the potion, some of their belongings and Ni~ya’s clothes were. He clenched his fists and tried to relax but couldn’t. He felt like he was drowning in a sea of anger, sadness and fear and that Reita was not there to protect him. And at the same time, he saw Reita looking at him, hope, trust and love in his eyes and he just felt like breaking or hitting something.
He knew he couldn’t act this way in front of his lover anymore but the only outlet he had was to sweep off all the things on the table and he did so in one gesture, his arms throwing them to the floor and his fists subsequently hitting the nightstand’s wood.
“Can’t and won’t are different things!” He cried but he knew that he was being wilful and simply irrational. There was nothing that Reita could do or say to soothe his feelings and yet he thought that Reita should try harder. He was constantly contradicting and doubting himself. His lover seemed to sense that and stayed silent. Aoi’s anger subsided and guilt came in his place. He lowered his eyes to the floor where all their things were scattered and sweeping his eyes over them managed to think calmly, yet with a heavy hard, about their situation. There was just something about chaos that he found relaxing.
Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of something shining inside one of the shirts. He knelt and picked it up. He ran his hands over the soft silky material and then reached inside the hidden pocket. The shining object that he had caught a gleam through the light material of Ni~ya’s shirt was a small, clear and weightless ruby, hanging on a golden chain. It wasn’t just any ruby either; it had a hollyhock etched deep within it and Aoi tightened his fist around the small object and then cradled it against his chest.
Ni~ya had saved his medallion, he wondered at the absurdness of the situation, kept it close to him at all time, considered it precious. That thought did not fit with the image he had of the naga and if the images didn’t match, then maybe he had been wrong to judge the naga so harshly. And maybe, just maybe, Ni~ya had kept it because he had thought about returning it to Aoi. Whichever the case, Aoi had it back in his hands again and he could not hate Ni~ya for stealing it anymore.
“What is it?” Reita dared to ask and approached a kneeling Aoi.
“This was my mother’s. It’s the only thing she left me before she died. Ni~ya stole it from me and that’s the main reason for hating him throught the years, even before I found out he was your destined mate.” He explained.
“Can I see it?” Reita questioned and when Aoi nodded and opened his fist, he saw the small beautiful red ruby and gasped. In the fire’s lighting, the carved hollyhock seemed to sway like a flower in the wind and the ruby was so transparent that all light passed through it, coloured in red. “It’s beautiful, Aoi.” He murmured, knowing that it was for more than its’ beauty that the mishepishu held this small gem precious.
“My mom’s name was Aoi. She was named after the hollyhock flower. She was the last of the mishepishu before she gave birth to me. My father raped her, killed her parents and then kept her trapped in a room in his castle. And yet, she loved me and protected me. I’d like to think that Ni~ya wanted to give this back to me.” Seeing the hope in Reita’s eyes, Aoi felt his feelings lightening further. He felt for the medallion hanging around his neck, symbol of their bond; he felt the weight of the rounded medallion and the warmth of their love surrounding him. And he understood why the ruby had come back to him at such a time. He took the small golden chain on which the ruby hung and in a swift move, hanged it on Reita’s neck.
Reita was overly surprised, and it wasn’t just because of his lover’s gesture, although that was part of it. Him gasping Aoi’s name had a more deep reason than the present Aoi gave him, but the mishepishu didn’t realize what Reita was feeling and started to explain.
“You are the most important being to me now and I’d like to think that this will keep you safe. I’m sure my mother would have approved...”
The moment the medallion touched his chest, Reita felt the most wonderful warmth surrounding him, all centred around his midriff. He almost didn’t hear Aoi’s words, so concentrated was he on the wondrous fire spreading through him. It felt like love, in its purest and simplest form. He felt whole and connected and the strangest thing was that that warmth was somehow part of Aoi. It was almost as if he could feel the mishepishu’s magic and love, his life force, flowing through him. The feelings were so strong he almost forgot about the medallion and reached for the mishepishu kneeling in front of him.
But as he reached for Aoi, the warmth changed; it grew less intense and in its place a small beat, lulling in its repetitiveness, gentle like the ebb and flow of the tide and soft like the softest bird feathers reached his heart. For the beat was directly connected to the earlier warmth, the medallion and their love. It was such a soft beat and yet it rang through his blood and caught his heart in a vice-like grip. And then, he saw images of a beautiful woman caressing her stomach and singing a baby song, saw the same woman looking lovingly upon a dark haired little boy, saw the love, hope and despair she felt when she entrusted the only thing she had to a skinny little boy, hoping that it would keep him safe. And just like that, Reita understood. He brought his right hand on his stomach and then reached for Aoi with his left.
“Aoi...” He started and could hear his awed voice, deep and raspy, as if he had just started to speak after ages of keeping silence. Aoi must have heard the change himself and seen something in his eyes, for he was grasping his extended hand and asking him what was wrong. He just brought Aoi’s palm to his stomach and waited.
“Rei?”
“You can’t feel it?” He asked. How could Aoi not feel it?
“Feel what?” Aoi questioned.
“Reach with your magic, love, and tell me what you feel.” Reita knew that if there was any magic in this world that could reveal what Reita protected within him, it was Aoi’s. He felt and saw the light tendrils of magic creeping all over his body and rejoiced in the warmth of Aoi’s magic. He clearly understood the moment Aoi realized what was going on for the mishepishu’s mouth had opened wide, and his eyebrows had shot up into his forehead.
“Rei? What I’m reading is impossible.” His voice shook and Reita caressed his lover’s cheek, feeling Aoi relax just a bit and lean into his hand.
“I’m pregnant, love.”
“But that’s not possible, for more than one reason.”
“Which would be?” Reita cheerfully asked. Now that he could finally feel the small beat, he wondered what had took him so long to realize it before.
“You’re male and I was the one that bottomed spring to mind.”
Reita didn’t know the reasons why it came to be but he was a hundred per cent certain that it was and he also knew what had made everything possible.
“It’s magical, love.”
The owl chose precisely that moment to fly through the window and land on Reita’s shoulder, frightening the two lovers and making them jump apart. Reita laughed. The owl certainly had impeccable timing, as always.
“We’re going to have a bonding tonight.” Cha fluffed his feathers and declared proudly. When noticing Aoi’s tenseness and Reita’s more than creepy grin, Cha bothered asking. “What’s wrong with you too?”
“Cha, how did I become pregnant?” Reita asked immediately.
Cha only tilted his head and made a cooing noise.
“Because you have known all along, haven’t you?” The tiger resumed.
“Not all along, now. But I did realize it at some point. Oh, very well.” He sighed. “That night in the forest, you just happened to couple right under the eyes of the most mischievous fairies you could ever imagine. They also have a soft spot for true love.”
“But I was the one that bottomed.” Aoi declared.
“Really, do you know nothing about this world, Aoi? Because I was assuming that you were both magical beings. Ever hear of magic?” The owl dared to snicker.
“But still, why Reita and not me?”
“To me, it makes perfect sense. Fairies are creatures of the light, Aoi, although they love pranks more than any other magical beings I know, and between the two of you Reita must have seemed to them like the more motherly type.”
“He has a tender and loving heart.” Aoi resumed.
“Yes. And he is more certain and confident in your love. He believes in the two of you and nothing could threaten that belief. Not even Ni~ya’s appearance.” Cha declared in blunt tones and then decided to cut the charade and get to the couple he had flown such a long distance for.
The silence was a bit unsettling and Reita worried about his lover.
“Aoi? Are you ok?”
The mishepishu smiled.
“I’m perfect, love. But how did you know?” Aoi wondered.
“It was the ruby. The moment you put it on me, I felt it. And then, I also saw images of your mother and you.”
“She wanted you to know and wanted you to tell me. And if I know my mother, there’s more than one reason she’s excited about this.”
Reita put his hand on Aoi’s arm and urged him to continue.
“I am the last of my people. Without the blessing of the gods, a mishepishu cannot be born. She must have blessed us somehow and interceded with the gods. You’re pregnant with a mishepishu, love. It’s the only thing I can think of that would make the medallion react in such a way. For the memories captured inside that ruby can only be seen by a mishepishu and you have him in you.”
Reita gave him a brilliant smile and Aoi lunged to hug his mate, his love and the carrier of his child - he wouldn’t dare think of Reita as a mother. Wrapped up in each other, the magic between them grew in intensity and Aoi’s heart relinquished all his fears and doubts. It wasn’t just the fact that Reita was pregnant, but the happiness that had shined earlier on his face, the knowledge that the mishepishu gods had blessed their unions, the fact that fairies had recognized their love as true passion and finally understanding what had made Ni~ya change his mind so fast.
Aoi’s heart had been clouded for a long time and only now had the clouds faded away and allowed all the love and trust that lay hidden in his heart shine through. The mishepishu was finally free of the phantoms of his past. With that change came another one.
“I’ll trust Ni~ya, love. Because you trust him and because I want to learn to trust him too.” He whispered, his lips softly caressing the shell of the tiger’s ear. Reita only smiled and hugged him closer.
“Thank you, Yuu.” Reita finally had both his mate and his best friend back.
A/N: Oh yes. Finally, the mystery unravels. I promise to keep the mpreg light though. I really would like to underline that making the baby had nothing to do with Reita's little swimmers getting inside Aoi. I mean really, Reita doesn't have the proper organs for that so how could that even generate in a pregnancy. The fairies chose a "mother" and then helped their magic realize a miracle.
On a more personal note, I do apologize for the delay. School and exams have kept the bunnies busy.
