Chapter 56

Without another word exchanged between them, the travellers returned from the cemetery only to find a very happy couple waiting for them in front of the fire. They had just managed to greet Yomi and Ruka and tell them that they had managed to get the two ingredients needed for the antidote when they were shocked into silence and then cajoled into rambunctious laughter by Yomi turning into the cuddly animal critter and performing jumps in front of their teary eyes. They were all moved by the fox’s success at finally finding his fox form and the sheer cuteness of the small animal.

“So are we going to celebrate a wedding tonight?” Ruki asked after all the excitement died down a bit.

“Well, I don’t know yet.” Ruka answered, seemingly a bit confused himself. “I’m still looking for that annoying bird. If I find it, I might just as well pluck all its feathers out before allowing it to talk.”

“So Cha isn’t with Reita?” Kai wondered.

“No. I went to their room earlier. There’s no change in Ni~ya’s condition by the way. He’ll survive the night, but Aoi isn’t so sure about tomorrow.” Ruka replied.

“I’ll make sure to go for the brimstone first thing in the morning and then, we might actually have the antidote ready before we leave. It would definitely make carrying him easier too.”

“You mean supposing he isn’t as badmouthed and stubborn as Aoi or as prideful as the dragon here.”

“I detest that, you know.” The same dragon pouted in an offended manner. “But I’ll let it go for now.”

“That’s because you know it’s true.” Was surprisingly Asagi’s bold statement, that made everyone fall into a shocked silence, not quite believing their ears in hearing the quiet and introvert seer talking and joking like that.

“I think that a lot more things happened in that cemetery than you’ve told us.” Was Ruka’s formidable ice-breaker.

A lot had happened indeed. The two times Asagi visited the cemetery ended up bringing him more peace of mind than he could have ever imagined. Not only had he confirmed the existence and love of his mate, but he had finally managed to make terms with his sister’s death, let go of some of the anger, despair and guilt he had been feeling, and also realized - probably like everyone else- that her and the villagers’ death had played a big role in the unravelling of this story. That emblem on her grave stone, which had suddenly been altered by who knows what kind of magic, had obviously been put there for a reason, and it had to be connected with his curse.

So while Kai went up to Reita and Aoi’s room to give them the news, the ingredients and check up on Ni~ya, the others rushed into explaining all that had happened before. This time, even Asagi played part in the retelling, and it was indeed a sight to see the usually weary travellers gather round the table, in front of the fire, a cup of warm wine between their hands and munching on some food brought to them by the inn keeper, animatedly exchanging stories.

“Here’s the gelsemium and the nightshade.” Kai presented the bag to Aoi and then took his place near the naga. He didn’t even need a scan to know that Ni~ya’s condition was only decaying with time. The naga was whiter than parchment, drenched in sweat, even though they had removed all his clothing and only covered him with a light sheet, his heart was beating frantically, his lungs were beginning to shut down, causing him to have trouble breathing. The seizures were less intense and often because all the bodies functions had begun to slowly shut down.

“I’ll get the sulphur in the morning. How long do you think it’ll take you to make the antidote?” Kai innocently asked.

“I can grind the ingredients and form the base in minutes, but tying it all together with my magic will be more complex than that. I just don’t know at this point if I’ll be able to do it.” Aoi clinically said.

“Couldn’t you at least talk to Ruki? Maybe he could help.”

“I’ll think about it.”

After Kai had left the room, already having confirmed that the owl had not been seen since the storm, Reita closed in on Aoi, who was diligently working with the potion ingredients. He wrapped his arms lightly around his waist and pressed closer, effectively draping himself over the mishepishu’s back.

“There’s something you’re not telling me.” Reita stated.

“With this antidote base and Ruki’s help, if I and Ni~ya have any sort of connection, I could try to break into his mind, like I did with you.” The pause was all revealing. It might be possible, but the chances were slim.

“Ruki said that Ni~ya had cut by himself all connections binding me to him.”

“That leaves me then. In the past, he took something from me, and I’m afraid that he will never be able to return it.”

“Is that why you can’t forgive him? Weren’t you kids, Aoi?”

“People don’t change that much, Reita. Not really. And I’m not one that forgives easily and without an explanation and an apology. Not to even mention trusting that other person.”

“It sounds to me like you won’t even give him a chance to earn your trust.” Reita said and then unwound his arms from Aoi and left the room, sad and yet understanding Aoi’s plight.

“Would you risk losing me for him, Reita?” Aoi wondered and the slight doubt that wormed its way into his heart contributed even more to the negative feelings lodged there since the time Ni~ya had stolen his ruby medallion. He was left feeling powerless, with the doubt that Reita was after all attracted in some way to the naga and the possessive snake inside Aoi could not and would not handle that. Somewhere deep inside him was some force telling him to remove all threats and let Ni~ya die.

Downstairs, Reita approached Ruki, wanting to discuss the situation with him.

“Ruki, Aoi said that you might be able to get him past Ni~ya’s mental defences, and in doing so, allow the two of them to talk and resolve their issues.”

“I don’t know. You might not remember anything from back there in the gaol, when Aoi got into your mind and helped you out. You probably managed to escape the prison of your mind because you recognized Aoi, felt the connection you had to him. That link was close enough to allow him in relatively unharmed and permit him to pull you out. And the feelings and memories were positive. And he still used almost all his magic in getting you out.” Ruki paused in order to accentuate the next statement: “In Aoi and Ni~ya’s case, it’s the exact opposite.”

“He could die. That’s what you’re telling me, right?” Ruki simply nodded. “Can you at least tell me if there’s anything I can do...”

“If it were me, I’d simply stand by his side, till the end. He’d need my support, no matter the decision.”

“What are Aoi’s feelings towards Ni~ya, Ruki?”

“They used to be fear and hate. Now, they changed into distrust and dislike.” Reita acknowledged Ruki’s statement by simply breathing hard, forcing himself to relax and turn his back on trying to figure this out anymore. He was going to go back to Aoi and support his mate. When, all of a sudden, Ruki graced him with help, although in the form of another clue.

“Reita, there’s something inside you, that ties you with Aoi in the most permanent way imaginable. Something magical, borderline impossible, a miracle. If you find out what it is and tell Aoi before Ni~ya’s situation turns irreversible, Aoi might just come to believe in the fact that he can finally let go of the enmity between the two, and even come to believe in Ni~ya’s words.”

Ruki’s words were soft as a whisper and yet carried the weight of a life. Reita headed back to his and Aoi’s room. He found Aoi asleep on the bed next to Ni~ya’s. He simply sat next to the invalid, careful not to wake up his lover and tried to figure out what Ruki had tried to tell him. It was just his luck that he was absolutely pants at solving riddles.

…................................

A few of his feathers had actually gotten burn by the lightning and he was most unhappy about the way his master had decided to call him back to base. Unhappy and just a bit afraid, but of course the owl would not admit to that.

“You overstepped, again.” An irate prophet greeted him, eyes threatening to scorch the owl’s feathers more efficiently than even the lightning. Cha decided that he might be better off in his human form than in his more vulnerable feathered one. And so, surrounded in a magical mist, he transformed.

In front of the sapphire-eyed prophet now stood a slim, tall young man, his eyes a deep burgundy, his long tresses covering his nudeness much in the same way his feathers provided him protection in his other form. His warm chocolate coloured tresses shined in the white light coming through the windows and created a shocking contrast with the prophet’s blond ones. His sharp, almost pointed face was unexpected when considering the roundness of his bird form and so was his well defined nose, giving him an air of strength and intent.

“You and Asagi are really similar in saying that you don’t want them to know anything of the oracles, but tremble in front of the danger they are placed into because of your decisions. Ruka would not have accepted a simple ‘no’ and you know it.” Cha explained in an imbued tone.

“Do you actually pretend to mate them?” The prophet slashed at the man, knowing that such a bond could not be performed but in the current form. “Show yourself to another being, except me?”

“If someone heard you, they’d say you were jealous.” The prophet’s eyes turned to slits. “ You know the reasons I prefer my owl form.”

“And the pledge you took, to me no less.”

“But...” Cha confidently started. “Maybe it is time to accept that loosening a few rules isn’t such a wrong thing to pursue, especially if we tilt it with the purpose of restoring the right-wrong balance.”

The prophet turned around in order to hide his frown and turbulent feelings.

“You would want me to condone this, lend you my amulet and renounce a fifth of my powers. For what?” The prophet almost whispered the question.

“The happiness of those two. You’ve watched them, you know of the depth of their feelings. Will you just allow the Necra’s plan to succeed? Because you do know that if one of them dies, he will gain power over life and death.”

“But even if they are attacked, if helped by the others, the chances are they will survive unscathed.”

“And what if they don’t? The Necra thought out things this far, and even you have to admit this plan was as close to perfect as it gets. Please, just listen to me.”

The silence was an obvious sign of the blond man wrestling with himself, his beliefs and his feelings. Cha allowed him to split hairs and loot at the picture from all directions, assuming that in the end, the prophet’s love for the dragon and his fear of the growing powers of the Necra would convince him to give in. Winning was not possible without compromises.

“You are the bird of wisdom, after all.” The blond man turned and finally smiled upon his friend. “I’ll give you the diamond. But remember, once you’ve used it, that which will not affect Yomi will affect you. You will need blood, Cha, you will need it often and for quite a while. And you won’t be satisfied no matter how much you get.”

“Unless I find him.” Cha uttered brokenly.

“You won’t. He is supposed to die. ”

There was nothing he could reply to that. The chocolate haired man turned back into his majestic owl form, swooped in on the table and grabbed the pink diamond from its support and flew out the window, towards the inn that was hundreds of miles away. He was already speeding towards the travellers and did not hear the prophet’s latest oracle.

“Ruiza is one of the Necra’s pawns, Cha, and you will only be able to reach him when you will stop doubting yourself, my friend.”

A/N: Hehehe, even more characters. And we now have all the prerequisites for Yomi and Ruka mating. But the plot thickens.
