Chapter 43
The sun was already losing its strength and the scent of the forest permeated the once dry air. The dunes in the distance gradually grew higher, sharper and rocky, turning into mountains while the sand under the travellers’ feet gave way to grass and brown soil. The sky finally lost its clearness and clouds like swan feathers spotted the sea of blue, while the sun hid its yellow face behind a few patches of cotton. A soft breeze rattled the trees and took with it the smell of the forest, carrying it further and further away. The illusion had completely melted and the travellers finally felt at home and at peace.
“I think we all need to find out more about what just happened and figure out what to do from now on, but at this moment, the only thing I want to think about is getting to that spring and taking a nice bubbly hot bath, lounging around in the grass, eating something and then sleeping for a day. I do hope no one opposes this plan.” The dragon said, grinning, for what it seemed like the first time in ages and he truly felt like the dragon king again. Deserts were definitely not a dragon’s chosen place of stay.
Everyone was happy to comply, especially the couples because the king’s plan had one more merit to it: they finally got some alone time, after weeks of travelling in close quarters and having to tolerate the lack of intimacy, now, in the middle of the forest, with less of a threat to guard against and plenty of trees to guard one from inquiring eyes, they could finally spend some time together.
There was no one wanting that together time more than Aoi who simply felt overwhelmed from everything. He had woken up from what seemed like a very long and deep sleep to Reita, his kisses and his declaration of love. And it hadn’t all been a dream, for Reita had been practically glued by his side ever since defeating those monsters, and he also felt it through their medallion, the change in their connection. But he couldn’t understand it, hadn’t had time to deal with all the changing feelings. He needed to talk with Reita and, if he were lucky, finally be together with his mate - if that was indeed what they were now.
The owl was a very wise being apparently for it immediately noticed the change in atmosphere and the passionate looks the mates were sending each other and decided it was time to get some rest for himself and maybe a bit of a snack. He had missed the forest so.
“Off me be then. Aoi, call me when done mating, ok?” The owl simply voiced without bothering with the blushes almost everyone in the group suddenly adorned.
“Someday, I’m gonna kill that bird.” Aoi mumbled. Reita just looked endearingly at his mate and at the flying owl. Somehow everything seemed more hopeful. If only Hitsugi were here too. How he would have blushed and stuttered at the previous comment…
“Should we go? The others have already left.” Aoi shyly asked and it was intriguing to the tiger, for since their childhood he had not heard Aoi being shy. He had thought that the grown man had lost almost every habit he had had then but it seemed that was not precisely the case. Reita grinned, caught Aoi’s hand in his and dragged him away.
While Aoi and Reita were busy finding the perfect spot, the king had dragged a less enthusiastic seer towards the direction he thought the spring was in. He needed that bath and he needed it now. Damn the desert and the dust and the sun. He could swear that his porcelain skin had gone a few shades darker and that was simply unacceptable. He’d rub himself so hard in the water that he’d shed a few skins and return to his lovely colour. And well, he needed to get Asagi to relax for a bit too, especially now that the seer didn’t have to fear any visions.
It seemed his memory served the dragon right for they were soon back in the clearing, amidst the bed of beautiful flowers, facing the spring. The king swiftly proceeded to digging a bathtub, redirecting some of the water towards it and heating it up. He really was grateful that he could use a minimum of magic now without fearing he would get wounded.
“Remind me again why I can use my magic like this?” It really was a rhetoric question for he already knew the answer but he wanted to hear Asagi talk again and maybe gather from the inflexions in his voice the state of mind the seer was in.
“The web of destiny has been broken, and with it the web of magic. For some hours or maybe even a few days, none of the rules we’ve known so far apply.” The seer must have been better at hiding his feelings than the king had thought for the dragon could not detect anything in his voice.
“Come in with me.” He invited Asagi into the bathtub. He, himself, had wasted no time in getting undressed and lounging in the sinfully hot water. Being a dragon definitely had its perks, he thought.
Asagi hesitated. The water was inviting and he really missed a bath too, but getting into the same tub with the king was unprecedented and slightly terrifying. Still, he really had no choice so Asagi quickly shed his clothes and eased in the hot water. He was immediately red from the heat. The dragon had obviously adjusted the temperature so it would suit a dragon, but for a human, it was a bit overdoing it so instead of comfortable, the seer was just plainly boiling hot. Thankfully, the king noticed and stopped heating the water. With cold water flowing constantly from the river, it quickly reached a more pleasant temperature and the seer relaxed, dipped his head in the tub and allowed all the stress and tiredness of the trip to flow out of his body. He didn’t even bother scrubbing himself, just floated there, being blissfully unaware of his surroundings, for a few pleasant moments forgetting even about his king. That was until he was unexpectedly roused from his near-meditation-like state by a pair of big soft hands massaging his shoulders and washing his back. He almost jumped out of the water with the shock he received, if not for the same hands keeping him in place.
The dragon chuckled. It really had been a spur of the moment decision. He had seen the stoic mask Asagi usually wore falling off and the seer relaxing in a way the dragon had never seen before and he just wanted to touch the other, make sure he really was real and there with him. And once the dragon wanted to do something, he got his way no matter what he had to do to get it. It had been like that since his childhood and it would be like that until the day he died. He was surprised to see that his voice had triggered goose bumps on the seer’s fair skin, skin that the king loved the silky feel of and its sheer whiteness. Even he, the dragon king himself, had gotten tanned during their travels, but Asagi had not changed one bit. And then, a wonderful fragrance reached him and he almost sighed. Perhaps it was due time to clear everything up.
“You really do smell like roses.” He whispered.
“Huh?” Was such a not-Asagi-like answer that the king just had to let go of the other and grab his belly from laughing too hard. And the pout on Asagi’s face when turning towards him just made the king want to kiss him and, following his very own rule, without considering things twice, the dragon grabbed the seer, drew him close and sealed his lips in a fiery kiss, fiery but one-sided for Asagi was shell shocked and utterly non-responsive. The king drew back and tried to apologize but to his surprise, received a very heavy slap instead.
“What the…”
“What did you think you were doing, my king?” It was never good when the seer resorted to ranks and politeness. It meant he was extremely mad and the fire in his eyes was undeniable proof of that. It was indeed time to clear everything up.
“Asagi, I’ve been drawn to you lately. I’d maybe even say I’ve started to fall in love with you. You intrigue me and I feel like I have to keep you close and safe and I hurt when you’re getting those blasted visions and my heart just jumps in my chest when you might be in danger...” It was a bad sign if he was babbling and unfortunately, he was, so he decided to shut up.
Asagi’s face was pained.
“You don’t love me. You’ve just managed to convince yourself you do. Or maybe yes, you do love me as a friend or as a brother. Your desire to protect me, the me you see as defenceless is what has made you think you have other kind of feelings. But you can’t love me.”
“Why not? Why is it so hard to believe that anyone could love you?”
“It’s not that. This time it isn’t that.” The seer vehemently denied.
“Then what? Why won’t you let yourself be loved? Would it be such a disaster?”
“You don’t love me, you idiot!” Now that got the king to shut up. He couldn’t remember the last time anyone had dared insult him and he was fairly sure that Asagi had never swore before, not ever; because the seer didn’t really get mad. “Do you remember the first time you heard your mate in the forest, or that other time in the village? Compare the feelings you had then with the feelings you say you have for me and then tell me you love me!” The seer demanded and the king tried to comply. Truth was he couldn’t remember well, he could remember just a deep, silky voice and the way the words “my love” had been filled with so much longing. His heart had beaten faster and he had wanted to see the other so much.
“It doesn’t compare. What I feel for you is so much stronger than what I felt then.”
“Is it? If I had said the same things would you have believed me? His voice, didn’t it intrigue you, make your skin crawl, put a fire in your heart?”
The dragon didn’t know. If Asagi had said the same things to him, would he have snapped out of the melancholy that had been likely to kill him? Or would he have brushed him off? And still, there was that one strong memory with Asagi, the night his heart had been shattered.
“It didn’t all start now. I think it all started that night when you comforted me after he broke my heart. You told me you were there and your touch helped me heal. How do you call that? Your voice, it held love.”
Asagi sighed and with clear eyes, revealing his very soul for the dragon, for the first time since the other had found him clutching the body of his sister, all those years back.
“I love you as a brother, sometimes as a mother. That’s it. I would give my life for you; I would do anything to comfort you, yes, just like I would have done for my sister. You’re family. The one I love passionately, with all my soul, ever since the time I saw him in that dream or vision or whatever it was, is my mate. You don’t even truly understand me. You know me, better than anyone else, knowledge gained after so many years being together, but you don’t understand me and never will. He does that without even trying. He loves me without me doing anything. You, my king, are just confused.”
And just like that, Asagi got up, got out and got dressed, ending the conversation and cutting all hopes or dreams the dragon might have had. His heart broke just a bit and yet, he didn’t feel like bleeding, he didn’t feel like that day he had been betrayed and left behind, he still felt alive, could still feel the water caressing his skin, the breeze ruffling his hair and the vague smell of roses Asagi had left behind. The world was still in colours and yet his heart was still confused. He must have been too caught up in his emotions not to feel someone entering the bath, but two hands covering his eyes suddenly jolted him. He tried to get away and yet he was kept firmly in place, unable to move, and then, when hearing the silky voice he remembered so well, he lost all will to move.
“You have been naughty. I should punish you.” The voice said but to the dragon it just sounded like a promise, one his heart desperately wanted fulfilled.
“I am the only one you’re allowed to love, and I won’t have my mate cheating on me.” The tone was a little bit harder, like a polished blade wrapped in a silky shawl, just waiting for the silk to fall off and stab its victim; and yet sometimes the silk is stronger than the blade. For a moment, the king thought he wouldn’t mind being scarred like that.
“I will never scar you, except with pleasure and endless nights of ecstasy. That I promise you, my mate.” Somewhere deep inside him, something rebelled and he tried to bark at the one behind him but strangely it came out more as a strangled plea than any type of warning.
“We aren’t mated yet.”
“No, we’re not. The day we meet and I say your name for the first time, while you say mine, will be the day of our bonding. But until then I can leave you with a reminder.” Sharp teeth dug deep into his soft flesh right below the ear, exquisite pain enveloping him, and then a sinfully silky tongue erased all pain to replace it with pleasure, like molten lava erasing everything from its path.
And before he had recovered even a feeble grip on reality, the other was gone, disappeared into thin air, leaving the king gasping into the now tepid water. “Asagi was right”, was the last conscious thought he had before he gave in to his desire and took care of what his mate had started.

Also, we are finally clearing up some things. The king's feelings for Asagi have lurked in the background for quite some time and now, I finally took the time to clear that up and introduce a bit more of his mate. What do you think? If you still have any doubts or questions, don't hesitate to ask.
And you know that my bunnies feed on comments, love and chocolate, so keep those coming. Grin. Big squishes.
