Chapter 42

All around him was silence and stillness. He couldn't and wouldn't feel anything but Aoi's breaths. Couldn't direct his attention towards anything but Aoi's dark eyes, that were slowly focussing on him. He held his breath when Aoi's orbs finally met his and held, Aoi recognized him and an angelic smile illuminated his face. Almost as if in a trance, Reita bent a bit and brushed his lips over his mate's. It was just a fleeting tender kiss, but it shocked Aoi nevertheless. The tiger could see the lack of comprehension in the other's eyes and without allowing him time to ask, Reita charged ahead: “I love you.” It seemed as if he had gone through everything only to finally say those three words.

Aoi would have made a shocking imitation of a fish gasping for air, Reita thought, if he wasn't so damn gorgeous, even after coming back from the dead. His skin had recovered its rosy colour, his eyes were shining and his lips were red and moist from just being kissed. His elegant eyebrows were raised in surprise while a lock of hair was conveniently placed so as to point to his mesmerizing lips. Reita was bewitched and rightfully so, he decided.

He was impatiently waiting for Aoi to reply back, for the dark haired man to snap out of his stupor but with a huge rumbling sound, in an instant, around his barrier, three creatures like the ones that had killed Aoi before, attacked. One of them had come right from underneath them, but it only hit the barrier and had to resurface in another spot. Aoi cringed and his body jerked, signalling that he wanted to get up.

“No!” Reita stressed, in a commanding way, a tone he was quite sure he had never used before with Aoi. He was ordering him to stay put and not even think about getting up. “You are not to move from here until I get back. Even if you want to, my barrier won't let you out so don't even try.”

“Yomi! Get in here! And all the others.” Reita cried, finally allowing his friends to approach them. The worms had attacked Reita's net but it was obvious that it wouldn't take long before their attention switched to the others. In seconds, everyone was gathered beneath his mercury net.

“Reita, you owe us an explanation, but now is not the time.” The king was the first to talk and no one bothered to contradict him.

This time, Reita was quite angry at the things attacking. For one, they were the ones responsible for Aoi's death earlier. Secondly, they dared interrupt their reunion and his confession. Reita was furious and a furious tiger was a sight to see. Even in his human form, his pupils grew thinner and thinner, resembling slits, his nails elongated and his hair stood up. The net all around them vibrated with his pent up magic and for once, Reita was disposed to reek havoc.

White tigers were fairly peaceful creatures. Solitary, quiet and beautiful. Some would call them pure. But they were also extremely protective of their own. And Aoi was Reita's, therefore this tiger was in combat mode. Yomi was the only one that had ever seen Reita in a state similar to the one now, but back then, he had been the one attacked and too frightened to really observe his friend. Now, he understood and was awed with the change. He knew that at the moment, where the tiger was concerned, everything could become an enemy, even friends, so it was better to simply let Reita do as he pleased and talk with him after he had calmed down.

“Yomi, can you reinforce the barrier with your own? And you and everyone that isn't fighting can be protected inside it. Me, I'm getting out there and ripping those things apart.” He would have dashed alone, but felt Kai's reassuring touch and nodded. The king obviously wanted to get out there too, but not being able to use his magic, there wasn't much he could do. Ruka was equally in danger.

Reita was about to let go of Aoi when he felt the lightest touch on his cheek and turning towards the beauty in his arms, he saw that the basilisk had taken off the medallion and presented it to him. The meaning was obvious: use it. Reita hesitated. Would Aoi be fine without it? They could use the dragon's help, seeing as at the moment three colossal worm creatures were barging against the double barrier, but he wouldn't risk Aoi's life for anything in the world.

“He's fine. Nothing will happen.” were Asagi's reassuring words and Reita believed him, seeing only honesty on his face. He gave their medallion to the dragon. Kai had his on. Reita knew he wouldn't be needing it because even without a medallion, the barrier had held and he hadn't felt any adverse reactions. Just before the three of them crossed the border of the barrier, he heard Asagi's whisper: “you changed everything, Reita and you don't even realize how much.” He'd be sure to ask Asagi what he meant later.

As soon as they got out, all three creatures lunged at them. But it didn't take more than a split of a second for the three of them to have metamorphosed and now a roc, a white tiger and a dragon were counter-attacking. The roc and the dragon quickly flew up into the skies, using their ability to fly to their advantage, for no matter how long the snake-worms, they would never be able to reach them. The creatures lunged at them, sometimes almost hitting them, spraying their poison, but the airborne beings were too swift and agile to allow themselves to fall pray to their attackers' cheap tricks. And in retaliation, they used fire, to their hearts content. Soon, the smell of burning flesh was filling the air and no matter how the worms crawled or tried to avoid the incoming flames, the aftermath of the battle was painfully clear. The fire-breathing dragon and the roc, using his magic and his wings to create the spark needed for combustion, were the unchallenged winners.

Things were not quite as easy for Reita, which must have been the reason why towards the end of the fight, all three creatures, two of them with horrible burns and on their last breaths, were charging towards him. The scene where all three foes were storming towards the tiger had everyone else holding their breaths, and Aoi futilely trying to get up and out of the barrier.

Reita had been so infuriated that he had lunged at the first foe barring his way. A tightly knit mercury barrier surrounded his tiger form and no matter how the creature tried to bite, rip or poison its way through it, it held its own, while on the other hand, allowing the tiger to sink his claws and teeth in the soft flesh. No poison was stronger than mercury, Reita knew and so he had no qualms towards literally ripping the thing apart piece by piece. The enraged tiger purposefully took his time, not going directly for the weaker spots, like the antlers on its head, but cutting long straight lines across its head and body, making blood ooze and stain the ground. He almost cut it straight in half at one point before relaxing his claws just a bit, inflicting maximum damage without actually killing it. Tigers were not creatures craving for blood, but Reita was too far gone in his rage to care about anything but maiming and killing the ones that had hurt his mate. He was on the point of delivering the final blow when from the corner of his eyes, he witnessed the other two charging towards him. He avoided being hit in the nick of time, swiftly jumping and fleeing to the left, retreating right below his two friends. His rage had been appeased and he decided it was due time to get back to a concerned mate.

Mercury vines shot from the sands, chaining the three worms with diamond-like cutting webs, while the dragon did not waste a second and blew scorching flames over and over the crawling things. After a few minutes there was nothing left of the three attackers but a stinking mass of burned flesh.

As soon as he morphed back and wiped a bit of blood out of the corners of his mouth, a familiar owl swooped in and landed on his shoulder.

“Overdoing much?” It joked in that familiar drawl.

“And here I thought I was rid of you.” Reita joked back. In truth, he was quite glad to have the bird back.

“Bloom late but grow fast, no?” the owl remarked, its fluffy head tilted towards one side, almost like a cat would. Seeing the peculiar reaction, Reita felt the impulse to scratch it between the ear-like feathers. He could swear the owl purred.

“Are you really an owl?” he didn't expect a reply though. “Wouldn't you like to come along? The desert seems like a lonely place to live in.”

The owl hooted.

“Not desert. Magic.” While Reita's attention had been occupied with the bird, Asagi and the others had approached.

“This isn't a real desert, Rei.” Reita was awed at hearing his lover's voice, even scratchy as it sounded. He immediately moved towards Aoi and wrapped him in a hug, and then pulled him down to the ground, holding him tight to his chest. And because of their position, he realized something: they weren't abnormally hot. Even though the sun was still bright in the skies, the temperature was quite pleasant and even a soft breeze ruffled their hairs.

“Why isn't it scorching hot?” Reita asked.

“Magic fading it is.” The owl, still perched on his shoulders replied.

There is water everywhere. He remembered Aoi telling him days before. He was obviously right, if they weren't in an actual desert, but in some kind of magical prison.

“Speak you can, seer.” the owl pierced Asagi with its gaze and just like that, the seer started his explanation. His voice was even and paced, as if reciting the ingredients of a difficult to make dish, too mechanical-like even for Asagi, but no one dared to interrupt and ask what was wrong.

“We were trapped in this magical dimension. The one that trapped us, our enemy, had only one purpose: destroying what we have created so far. The target was Ruki and Kai's connexion, at that point the biggest threat towards him. But he hadn't counted on Aoi jumping in front of them and triggering his trap. Aoi's death wouldn't have brought him any immediate advantage for there was no medallion yet.

When we first entered the illusion, I wasn't positive it was a trap. I thought it was part of the quest. If it were, Aoi would have found Sakito, and whether he wished it or not, I was sure that he would be bewitched by him and the bond would form. No one has ever managed to resist such a creature after all. But now, Reita changed everything. Now, the thread of destiny tying Sakito and Aoi has been broken and a new bond has been forcefully weaved. It is both a good thing and a bad thing. The advantage is that this bond reduced even more the power of our enemy and got us out of that illusion. The disadvantage is that now Sakito and Ni~ya's mates have been ripped from them.

Reita and Aoi challenged destiny and won and in the process, changed every single scenario about the future.”

“Shouldn't you be having a vision then?” A worried dragon inquired. With a choked voice, finally revealing the anguish Asagi must have been feeling, the seer replied.

“The very fabric of destiny has been ripped apart. It will take some time to mend itself. Right now, there is no such thing as a future for me to see.”

The owl left Reita's shoulder and stopped on Asagi's, nuzzling his face with its soft feathers, wordlessly comforting him.

“And where do you fit?” Reita asked the owl.

“Oh, master sent me. Complain all the time, late mates, always saving.”

“His name is Cha. He is my master's pet...” Aoi explained without really clearing anything up for no one knew precisely who this master was, no one except Aoi, the owl, Asagi and a suspicious tiger.

A/N: I'm sorry for the delay. I know I didn't update last week. I've been very busy and also my bunnies have been on a bit of a strike. I had to practically pull their ears today and threaten them with starvation to get them to work. That being said, I'm finally on summer vacation, which means that I will feed my bunnies with all sorts of delicious bits on a daily basis which will probably get them to write more and finish this fic. My love and squishes to all my readers and kicks bunnies again as an apology.
