Chapter 31
Ruki felt the change in the couple immediately and smiled. Kai followed Ruki's gaze and hugged the panther tighter. Asagi's face muscles relaxed a bit and the king grinned. The only two that weren't sharing in the joy of reaffirmed love were Reita, who was unconscious, and Aoi, who had too much on his mind.
He had fallen for the soft hearted Reita years and years before, when they had still been kids, and he had been comforted by a younger child. That afternoon and many after that, all painful memories, transformed into bearable ones, and then into fond ones as he started caring for his new friend, a new friend that cared for him and wanted to protect him, even though it should have been the other way around. Aoi was the older one yet he had been surprised by Reita's confidence and maturity. And then he had lost him. Their time together had been so short that he doubted Reita remembered him at all, but for Aoi, Reita had been the first important person in his life, and the only one that hadn't judged him in any way.
He had worked hard to become the man he was today, someone that could in turn support Reita, someone that wouldn't feel ashamed or inferior when sharing his life with the tiger. He wanted Reita to be proud of him, like him again and this time, fall in love with him, because up till this day, Reita was the only one he knew that carried unconsciously a wise and dignified air, while at the same time being shy and soft hearted and so, so very beautiful, inside and out.
And it wasn't just a childish first love, an infatuation, because these feelings had only grown, matured from the small crush he had had as a kid, after he found out who Reita was, after he learned so many things about the tiger he felt like he might just be the only person in this world to truly understand him.
So what was Aoi supposed to do now? He had sworn that this time, he'd be the one to protect, shelter and ease his worries. That he'd be there for him. How was he supposed to... Just thinking about it made his stomach churn and his head ache, pains that seemed to spread to his whole body, to his very soul, like a slow, debilitating poison that wasn't merciful enough to allow you death. He heard the wind growing stronger and stronger, felt the night creeping closer from the coldness of the earth, felt the dryness of the air, announcing the approaching storm. He had been late in saving Reita, he hadn't believed the storm would come and he had allowed them to linger in Dred, and his mistakes would cost him more than he could afford. And still he didn't allow himself to shake or cry or show, because he had done too much of that in front of Reita...
“I can feel you.” the panther, after sitting down next to him, between him and Kai, talking to Aoi while snuggling closer to his lover, a hand wound around Kai's waist. “I think I'd feel the same way if it were Kai. It takes more strength than you think to care for someone like that. You're not weak, Aoi. You never were.”
“I can't save him now, can I?” Aoi grudgingly asked. It wasn't even a real question. And then, facing Kai. “Is there really nothing you can do? Nothing at all? I'll do anything.”
Kai chewed his lower lip, thinking. He had never met a case like Reita's before, so this was obviously not something he had learned about, but then again, neither had he learned about saving Ruki earlier, and it had simply happened.
“The problem is that I don't know why he isn't waking up. He's not hurt any more. Pain to him now shouldn't even be a memory. He's not waking up because he doesn't feel the need to, and I don't know why. I told you, his mate's magic might trigger something, without harming him in any way but...”
“I'm not his mate.” Kai shook himself.
“You might still be able to reach him, even though... It's risky. If we only knew why...”
“Maybe I can find that out.” Ruki voiced. “If I can read his mind...”
“That's too dangerous. Our minds are our strongest defence and Reita's right now is nothing like you could ever imagine. Not only is his tiger part still there, just waiting for the opportunity to resurface, but Reita himself prefers to be alone in his inner world.”
“But I'm a panther. When mind reading is concerned, I'm the best there is.”
“And you're not a panther any more.” Aoi affirmed with a finality no one would have expected. Was he that bad at accepting help, Kai wondered? He couldn't read Aoi's feelings and thoughts like Ruki could, but he knew Aoi was prideful and yet, he didn't think he would let his pride control him.
“Maybe you can get me in?” Aoi whispered, his eyes pleading with the panther. “If you use Kai's powers, you might just be able to...”
“No. That's impossible.” Ruki claimed.
“No, it isn't. I already have a connection, I just need the push. Please. I'm begging you.”
His attitude wasn't pleading and neither was his voice cracking or frantic, but his eyes and the pallor of his cheeks revealed his true feelings to anyone that just bothered to interpret the signs.
“Connection?” Kai asked. “Then maybe your magic might...” He was stopped by Aoi.
“I've been doing that since you told me yesterday. It hasn't worked.” Aoi gasped. Just how much was Aoi prepared to go through to be with Reita? Because unless he had been using that pendant - and Aoi had declared he was using it for something - then Aoi must definitely be affected by transferring that much magic. “Please. I know I can bring him back. I have to.”
Ruki nodded. Kai wasn't happy about possibly endangering Ruki, but he didn't want to give up on Reita either and he had the good sense to know that once Ruki decided on something, he wasn't the type to give up easily. Then, Asagi spoke and for the first time, surprised all of them. “Wait for the storm.” he said.
Aoi didn't understand at first but after gazing intently into Asagi's red eyes, gauging his intentions, he must have decided to trust the other. “Why? I thought you were opposed to this.”
“I thought you wouldn't interfere.” Ruka voiced.
“Oh, and he wouldn't. Asagi is more stubborn than a mule.” The king chipped in.
“This time, I think it might be worth it.” Asagi said, causing the king to smile broadly and give him an awkward hug. The dragon whispered in his ear. “I'm glad that talk got some sense into you.” Asagi replied in the same manner: “Presumptuous. Who ever said you had anything to do with this?” The king knew though that the smile in those red eyes was just for him. And then those red eyes closed abruptly and Asagi started shaking. The dragon caught him before his body fell to the ground. The smile disappeared from his face and he sighed deeply.
“I knew he was worried about the lack of visions lately and I wondered about that too...” The dragon started before gently lowering Asagi to the floor. He would have liked to hold the other while experiencing the vision but a flailing Asagi was simply too much to handle in these moments. “But you wished it wouldn't seem so painful.” Ruki simply stated the continuation.
“It's not just that it seems painful.” the king murmured. The meaning was not lost. Yomi burrowed deeper into Ruka's body. He was safe between those strong arms, breathing the vampire's faint aroma, feeling desire course through his veins while his lover lapped at the fresh wound on his neck. “You know, they say the panther is the one creature that symbolizes love, that is love itself. Looking at Asagi makes me think twice about that.” Yomi said between pants before he lost the ability to speak because Ruka had given his wrist in return. Ruka's passion-filled eyes and his very essence were what lulled him to sleep. When he woke up, Reita had just opened his eyes.
A/N: Yes, I know it's short and a cliff-hanger, but well, there's 2 reasons for that. Lately, I've been so busy I barely have time to even open word and write this. Secondly, the next part is waaay too long so I had to cut it here. I was thinking about putting this on hiatus just for a bit, but I really don't want to do that, and for now, at least the next chapter is written so... Keep the lovely comments and chocolate carrots going because I could really use the energy. My bunnies are in a bit of a flunk right now. Love you all.
