Summary: The age of magic and mystery is coming towards its end. But what if someone that has the gift to see the future can join forces with others who have the power to stop it? What will be born then? What will be found?
“Why is this happening, Asagi?” The king urged. “If now you can only see disaster in front of you, then there is no more reason to hide it from us, is there? Maybe by sharing at least a bit, we can bring that ray of light back.”
Asagi took a deep breath and then started.
Chapter 11
“This world is ruled by contraries: good-evil, right-wrong, white-black, life-death etc. That is because there are two forces which are at work. These forces must always be at balance one with the other. One being more powerful means that the world is facing will be heading toward it's end. But there are times when disequilibrium occurs and then, a window to set things right appears. If we miss that chance...
It has happened countless times in the past and it will happen in the future. It is happening now. Every time, rescuing the world follows a certain pattern, certain rules, if you will. We have to stop the destruction of magic. Magic is one of the motors of this universe. Magic is in everything, but it is most powerful in us, the magic creatures and in the most complex of emotions, like love and trust and belief. Once magic starts degrading, it will keep degrading in every single one of its manifestations. All around us, there's a web of magic; my red eyes can see it. That web had started decaying before we left but... It's faster now.”
“Why would finding my mate help stop this?” The king asked, more to himself. He knew from experience that Asagi would tell no more and would respond to no questions. But the king didn't need Asagi to answer that one for him, for he already knew the answer: love. And probably more than that, more than he could ever imagine. But he was at least a hundred per cent sure that love had to be a part of everything. He was roused from his musings by Kai's words.
“Asagi, isn't there a chance that your visions are wrong?”
Asagi shook his head. That meant 'no'.
“Is there a chance that you don't get to see every scenario?” Asagi seemed to be thinking about that. Kai continued. “You said you searched for them. Isn't it possible that this time you just couldn't find the good scenario?”
“Why are you asking me this?” Asagi demanded to know.
“Because you said that once magic starts degrading, it will keep degrading in every single one of its manifestations, right?” Asagi nodded. “But I'm assuming that comes with a condition: that we don't follow the right path, that we fail in what we should not be failing. Am I right?”
Asagi nodded again. He was wondering what Kai wanted to say.
“Then you definitely missed the good scenario in there, because Yomi's magic levels have just sky-rocketed. “
Asagi seemed shocked. And then Ruka, out of the blue, declared:
“I love him.” And everyone added in their heads: “And he probably loves you back.”
Asagi breathed relieved. And then he immersed himself in his thoughts. Sure, what Kai had said seemed to work, but there was one problem: he had never 'missed' finding that right thread. Never. Was it even a possibility? Couldn't it be something else? He couldn't decide so he looked up at the others, staring thoughtfully at him. Should he tell them? Looking around him, he asked:
“We're out of the forest?”
“Yeah. It wasn't safe. The town is actually very close.” The king answered. And then it hit Asagi, with such precision that he'd be able to bet his life upon it: the answer to his question. All his visions had had one starting point, just one, and that was after they got to town. Because in every single of his visions, they had gotten there too late. Asagi almost screamed.
“Kai, get to town now. Only you can stop it!”
“Stop what?”
“Just go! You'll know as soon as you see it.”
Kai didn't waste more time. He jumped on the horse and this time, without bothering with being seen by the humans, ordered the horse to fly as fast as possible. In just moments he was there.
He dismounted and started searching frantically for something. The problem with searching for something you don't know anything about, is that you're not actually searching, more like keeping your eyes open, or dipping your toes in the ocean to see how deep it is. Kai wondered around, passed a few shops, walked down some alleys, found nothing that would attract his sight. Asagi had said that he'd recognize it immediately. He was starting to worry that he might be too late.
All of a sudden, he took a turn and came upon a tent-like, house-resembling thing. He hadn't seen it before because it was surrounded by trees that blocked the sight. It seemed that the thing was situated in some sort of park. Loud noises came from the inside. Kai went closer. As soon as he removed the sheet that was supposed to be the door, it seemed as if the noise increased tenfold.
It was dark in there, the only place lighted being the stage, and all around it were benches, filled at the moment with customers. The men were the ones that were making all that racket.
Kai focussed on the stage. It looked as if the stout man dressed in bright colours, standing in the middle, was showing off a huge black cat. Kai had never actually seen such an animal before, except in books. He flinched when the man's whip descended repeatedly on the poor beast. If he'd had the time, he'd save the poor thing, but he needed to find... He was about to go out of the tent but stopped abruptly. Something wouldn't let him step out without getting one final look at the beautiful animal. It wasn't anything like the strange force that had held them immobilised in the forest, this time it was more of a warning his heart was giving him. Maybe he just felt pity for the poor thing.
He turned around. The man was still beating the animal, ordering it to do something. Kai got closer. The closer he got, the clearer could he see. It was severely wounded, probably not only from the whipping it was receiving here. It was malnourished also, for he could see almost every bone in its bod. It was unwashed and probably sick too. The animal was trembling on his legs, obviously about to collapse. Kai didn't know why he was hurrying towards the front rows, but he did realize his feet were taking him there, as if in a trance. He could hear the man's voice now: “Spread them! I thought you had learned your lesson by now, you beast.”
Only when he finally reached the front row, did he realize what the man meant. The black cat had wings, small, frail looking, black wings. They were exactly the same colour as its fur and kept tight at the sides, so Kai hadn't been able to notice them from the distance. Up close, he could see just how worse for the wear was the poor thing, probably nearing its end. Kai decided he needed to stop the spectacle, give it at least a proper death. He was about to use his magic to tear apart the tent and fly himself and the creature away from there, when the cat suddenly looked straight at him.
Kai was speechless. Its eyes were like bright sapphires, chasing the darkness from his heart. And Kai felt that it was calling to him, no, he or she was calling to him. Because those were not the eyes of an animal, but of a magical creature, like him, a Panther. Realization dawned upon Kai: his search was over.
He readied himself to cast the spell one more time, when a growl that was at a same time a whimper escaped him. He hadn't even been aware of making it. The same moment he was about to save the creature, he/she collapsed.
Today was another one of those days when they'd try to get him to open his wings and fly around the ring. He hated that human and his whip, he hated always being in pain, hungry and thirsty and dirty. He hated having to put on a show for those slimy creatures. But more than anything else, he hated himself, for being so weak that he'd give in again and again. But no more! He could feel his end soon, and with it, he'd be free from this wretched life. He welcomed it. He knew that his body was failing him and that his mind and heart, by not putting resistance, not clinging to life, was aiding the process. He just wanted to die already.
The world around him was already starting to fade, when the sweetest scent he had ever felt surrounded him and he had to look up and search for it. He didn't want to die before knowing what it was. He lifted his head. It was already a hard thing to to do and even though he looked in the direction he thought it was coming from, his senses weren't what they had been. There was only fog in front of him.
But then, it was as if his last shred of will clung to that fading hope and for just a few moments he was able to see: a dark haired, black eyed, slender yet powerful angel looking at him from the front seats. He was trying to save him, he knew instinctively, but what could he do? It was too late.
The scent surrounded him, protected him. He wondered why it provoked such reactions in him, why just the sight of that man was making his heart beat louder, when his heart could hardly manage to beat normally anymore.
The moment their gazes met, he knew, irrevocably knew why. That was his mate, the one being made for him, for whom he was destined in return, the only one that could bear to love the horrible thing he had become. But it was too late, the image was starting to disappear again and this time, it truly was the end. With his last efforts, he gazed for the last time at the man. His last thought was: “I am happy I got to see you in the end.”
A/N:
Yes, I know you want to kill me for the cliffhanger, but I really didn't have a choice since it really was too long to add what comes afterwards too. I can assure you of one thing, so that you won't fret too much, the Panther will be saved. Who it is and how it will be saved, well, that's all in the next installment.
Oh, and this time: explanation. What is a Panther? Is it just the animal that we love in the "Jungle book"? NO.
It's other names are pantera, pantere, and love cervere. I will probably use in other chapters love cervere, since it is linked to it's characteristics. The wikipedia article has some information on it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panther_(legendary_creature) but my panther is a bit different from that too. First of all, it has wings (and they're not the frail looking things Kai described in this chapter). It's fur is completely black, except it's paws, which are white. It's eyes are the colour of sapphires. It is the embodiment of fire and sensuality. It can breathe fire, and it can attract everyone around it (only the dragon is immune) but those things happen only if it wills it. It also has some other powers, but you'll find out more about it later in the fic. I wonder if you can guess who it is and why it's Kai's mate. (There is a reason for that, you know. Just like there is a reason for Yomi being Ruka's mate...)
Ok, no more spoilers and explanations.
Hope you enjoyed. Hugs to all
