Chapter 7
Something about the whole king kills subjects thing didn't seem right to Ruka. The scene earlier didn't seem right either. But he couldn't exactly point at what was wrong with the picture. It was the same feeling that he had had when meeting Yomi, as if something was wrong and he was just missing a vital, extremely obvious clue as to what was warped.
And then his thoughts strayed to Yomi. Why was the kitsune so irritating and at the same time, so relaxing to be around? Ruka was mature enough to realize that he had liked cradling the small being in his arms, being depended on by the kitsune and he had absolutely hated Kai there for a moment. Ruka, the vampire, jealous? Hell was freezing over. And yet... Here he was thinking about the kitsune again. When he had more important things to consider, like his reign over the vampires.
Yomi (he really needed to stop thinking about him) had been right. Lately, more and more vampires were disobeying him and preying on humans. There were even stories of vampires falling in love with humans (the kitsune also had similar stories, apparently), as if that were possible. The vampire bared his teeth. They might be falling in love with their blood, but it didn't go farther than that. He hoped.
Vampires were not submissive creatures, although they did respect parentage and authority. And fear it. How could you not when the ones above you were much, much older and powerful?
Maybe that was the problem? Ruka was the ruler, but he was not the eldest. He was powerful, but he knew that there must be at least a couple of vampires stronger than him out there. And still, would that be enough of a reason for so many vampires to ignore his order?
Caught up in his thoughts, Ruka almost missed the faint sounds of crying and then of someone moving in the dark. He almost missed, emphasis on almost, because really he wouldn't be able to live it down if he truly had missed it. He turned around swiftly, in the blink of an eye, and watched carefully. The one responsible for the sounds was Yomi. Ruka relaxed a bit and decided to approach the now standing kitsune.
“Yomi, why are you up?”
“Sorry, did I wake you?”
“No, I'm not sleeping tonight.”
“Because you don't have your coffin?”
Ruka chuckled.
“You really have spent too much time around humans. Why would I possibly want to sleep in a place like that?” He had walked slowly, one step at a time and he finally stood in front of the kitsune. He was expecting the tears on the cheeks, he was not expecting the defeated and crushed look. “Why are you crying?” Yomi walked a bit further away from the others. Ruka followed.
“You know, foxes are normally night creatures. I guess that's why kitsune kids love to torture their parents by leaving their beds and wondering outside in the middle of the night. Growing up makes them less inclined to do that... Especially nights with a full moon, it's amazing how drawn we are to it. Maybe we do have something in common with vampires...”
“That would be ware-wolves, actually.”
Yomi raised his shoulders, implying that he really didn't care that much.
“When I was a kid, my mom told me I didn't do that very often, but my brothers...” Ruka noticed that his voice seemed to disappear there for a moment. “Almost every week they'd have a night of that. They'd get out of their beds and wonder outside. They'd play a bit and then come back tired and go back to bed. I could still feel them. Sometimes I'd forget that I was supposed to stop them and go out and played together. During nights such as this...”
Yomi seemed to sink before Ruka's eyes, his sorrow getting the best of him and Ruka just rushed forward, caught him, and allowed the kitsune to lean on him. Several minutes later, Yomi spoke again, but without pulling away from Ruka.
“I'm always being caught by you, aren't I? You must think me weak to break down as often as I do.”
“I don't see you as weak, Yomi.”
“And I'm not. But they were everything I had. If I worked hard for something, in the end it would be for them. They were my pillars and now they're gone and it feels as if I have nothing to live for any more. And I get mad at myself for still being able to laugh with Kai when they can't do any of that any more.”
“You have to find something else to live for. And think more of yourself. There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with laughing, it just shows that you're alive. I wish I could make you laugh like that. I can only do this.”
And Ruka released Yomi for a bit, and then gently raised his hands and erased the marks of tears on the small face, while all the time gazing into Yomi's beautiful amber eyes. Yomi allowed himself to lose himself in the other's gaze and touch and forget for a few moments about his pain.
“Thank you.”
“Don't. I wanted to do it.” Ruka loved to see the blush staining the kitsune's cheeks. It made something inside him flutter.
Yomi looked up at the sky, much in the same fashion the dragon king had done earlier. It was early in the morning and the stars had lost some of their strength. The light was slowly invading the world around them.
“I don't think I asked where the four of you are going? Three rulers and a seer, travelling alone through the woods.”
“Well, it's five of us now. And I guess it is fair to tell you where we're heading, seeing as you're coming with us.”
Hearing that, Yomi's eyes sparkled with gratitude. Of course he knew they were taking him with them, but it felt better to be told and to know that they weren't planning on leaving him somewhere around the way either.
Ruka continued. “Asagi had a vision. Something about the world ending. We're trying to stop that. So we're searching for the king's mate, who is a human male.”
Yomi chuckled. Ruka felt the same fluttering again. And then growled when he heard Yomi's words.
“Ruka-pon, why do I get the impression that you shortened that quite a bit. You really don't like talking much, do you?”
Ruka shrugged. It wasn't that he hated talking, just that he didn't see the need to use more words than that. Why waste your breath? That trait of his had infuriated quite a few, but Ruka didn't seem to give a damn until now.
“Do you hate it?”
“No. It's just who you are. And it's fun since I talk so much.”
“Why did you take Kai and Asagi?”
“Are you jealous?” Ruka would have probably admitted that yes, he was, but Yomi kept talking, not waiting for an answer. “They both seemed a bit off and I figured they'd be willing to leave me alone and not talk much. It's funny that I was the one that started all that. I really talk too much.”
Ruka accepted that explanation. A comfortable silence descended between the two of them while they watched the last traces of stars disappeared. Yomi yawned.
“Why don't you go back to bed. We still have a few hours before we leave.”
“And you?”
“I'm fine.”
“Come to bed with me.”
Ruka was not sleepy at all but that proposal just made his eyelids feel a bit heavier and his breathing a little harder. He could have sworn that he suddenly grew a heart too, because that area was being annoying. Yomi didn't seem to realize exactly what he had said, and Ruka was happy for that. However, if he accepted, could he live it down when the others woke up?
Oh, what the hell, he'd just wake up before them. And with that thought, he followed Yomi who had already gotten into the improvised bed. The vampire sneaked under the blankets and curled an arm around the kitsune's waist. Yomi cuddled closer and was asleep in moments. A very disturbed vampire watched the kitsune's chest rise and fall and the way his mouth opened and closed while breathing and then, surprisingly, fell asleep.
Ruka woke up with a start when hearing Kai's voice:
“I'm gonna tease the hell out of him.” He groaned. He knew exactly who Kai was talking about since at the moment the world's grumpiest vampire was being cuddled by the world's cutest kitsune, wrapped up in blankets. He'll never live this down.
So Ruka just decided to enjoy it while it lasted and refused to open his eyes and let go of Yomi. In the meantime the others woke up and started making breakfast, chatting excitedly about their trip from then on.
“Where do you think we should be heading?” Kai asked.
Asagi refused to answer. Of course he knew where, but he shouldn't influence the events too much... Kai sighed.
“Really, Asagi, can't you at least give us a clue?”
The king shot Kai a dirty look. He didn't want to pressure the seer.
“No, I can't, because then events would unravel at a faster rate. Change has already started. I am surprised you haven't noticed anything yet.”
“Noticed anything?” The king asked. Asagi simply bit his lip. He couldn't give them the answer.
That was the moment Yomi spoke up. Not even Ruka had realized he was awake. He wondered how that was even possible, seeing as he should have been able to feel the change in his heart rate. Ruka frowned.
“In our magic. Our magic is being affected by something.” Yomi explained.
Ruka bit his lip. That was it, wasn't it? The reason his senses seemed a bit out of tune lately. Vampires were not magical beings so it was a strong possibility that he would be the least effected of them all.
“Why haven't we felt anything?” The king asked frowning.
“Because you haven't relied on your magic since rescuing Asagi from the flames. That accelerated the process, I think. The more you try to use it, the more it's going to back fire.”
“Why do you know about this?” Kai asked, surprise written on his features.
“I saw it in a dream last night. I'm not a seer, but I must be in some way connected to the magic around me. It's probably the reason your magic called me to you, that day, and allowed me to know immediately who you were. However, since I am not a seer, like Akagi, it is also possible that my dreams will be distorted, and reality twisted. I don't think it's safe to rely much on what I say.”
“Because it's only natural that your magic is being meddled with.” Ruka added.
“Asagi, you can surely confirm or deny what he said, right?”
“I don't think I should...”
Kai cursed.
“It doesn't matter, does it. We'll know, once we use our magic again. Probably.” The king said. “However, we should avoid that at all costs.”
“So where are we heading?”Ruka asked.
The king and Kai shrugged, conveying that they had no idea.
“I...” Yomi started, but then seemed to think twice about talking. Ruka didn't urge him on, but surprisingly, Asagi did.
“Yomi, it was not coincidence that you stumbled upon us that day, and you do play a big part in this. Trust yourself more. Even if you are wrong, it is better to march forward than stand still.” It was cryptic enough to not reveal anything but strong enough to convince Yomi to talk.
“Ruka told me last night that your mate is human, a human male.” While saying this, Yomi had finally left the protection of Ruka's arms and stood up, running a hand through his hair. It seemed to have grown a bit.
The king nodded.
“He can't be just any human. In order for him to be your mate, you have to be extremely compatible. Including magically.”
The king snorted.
“Humans don't possess magic.”
“Some of them do, the ones they call witches. He has to possess it, other wise he can not possibly be your mate. Unless, you yourself lose all your magic. And since I'm assuming we're travelling to stop all this...”
Kai continued.
“And if it's a special human, a witch, with considerable power, probably, other humans have to have heard something about it. So we head towards the biggest town around here and dig up what we can.”
Yomi nodded. Of course they were taking a bit chance, the chance that Yomi could be wrong and yet, just like Asagi had said, they didn't have any other ideas at the moment. So the king summed it up for all of them.
“So what are we waiting for?”
