Chapter 4

“Are you okay now?” Kai asked, concern dripping in his voice. Ruka just rolled his eyes. Was he really the master of the rocs?

Yomi nodded eagerly and replied in a cheerful tone.

“Yup. Thank you, Kai. You’re so sweet. I bet you’d never abuse someone like that.”

“Tell me something, Yomi. Where were you raised?”

“Oh, there is this little cottage in the woods. We might not be far from there actually, just a bit more. I’m on my way back there actually.”

“So you and your family live alone in the woods?” That certainly explained his lack of manners, everyone thought.

“Pretty much. My mom would go into the nearest town and exchange animal skins or whatever vegetables we had extra for whatever we needed. Me and my two little brothers that is.”

“From where did you come before you approached us?”

“Oh, some of us were on a scouting mission. My mom got sick, she’s old you see, so I had to go off and do something to support my brothers. It would be a short job, a couple of days, and an easy one too, so I took it.”

“Scouting for what?”

“Well, I really shouldn’t say…”

“Oh, come on, we wouldn’t tell.”

“For dragons.”

The king’s head turned around so violently it made quite an impression on the human.

“What are you talking about?”

Yomi sighed and scratched his head, sheepishly.

“Oh, it’s just that there was this stupid rumour around these parts that up in the mountains lived dragons. And the king of these lands is kind of a mushy brains so he set up some parties to see if that was true.”

“What did you find?”

Ruka watched the exchange carefully. Was it just him again, or was Yomi actually toying with the dragon king? His every gesture or word screamed only one thing to the vampire, and that was: lie. And still, the human didn’t smell as if he was lying. Ruka would never miss that smell that all humans had when lying. But then, what exactly was bothering him? Surely, Yomi couldn’t be such a good liar to deceive the king of the dragons, the master of the rocs and the senses of the lord of the vampires, could he?”

“Oh, nothing. It was all a big lie after all.”

“Lie?” Ruka asked. “You mean rumour, don’t you?”

Yomi grinned at him. He actually grinned at him. After what Ruka had done, after his threats, the human was grinning at him! Yomi simply said:

“Of course.” And then quickly added. “My home is close to here. I’ll just have to part with you now. It’s been a pleasure meeting you, especially you, Ruka.”

Ruka just knew the human had been making fun of them all along and yet he had nothing to prove that with. But what disturbed him even more than that realization was that his heart gave a powerful tug when hearing Yomi had to leave. And his vampire heart did not give tugs in the first place, did it?

Yomi dismounted, shook hands with Kai, put a bit of a distance between him and the horses and then shouted:

“It was an honour meeting you, king of the dragons, lord of the vampires, master of the rocs, seer. I am truly happy I met you and I hope our people will manage to be friends one day. Oh, and a bit of an advice. When a bit further on, the road splits into two, follow the left one. It is a longer and not practiced road, but I am sure it will pose no problems for you. At the end of the right one, only human war awaits. You would not want to be caught up in that. I really must go. Oh, and another thing, the part about me being a scout was all a lie, as was the part about me being a traveller in those parts. I just wanted to see if I could fool you for a while. But my lies were soon about to be questioned, weren’t they, Ruka? Kai?”

The dragon king couldn’t believe his ears. He had been duped by a human? Perhaps it was late enough for an afternoon snack... `human a la feu` sounded wonderful. However, before he could act on that thought, Yomi was gone in the woods.

Kai laughed heartily. The king glared.

“I am not laughing at your expense, king. Or at least I’m trying not to.”

“Since when did you realize it?” Ruka asked.

“Since the beginning.”

“Why?” Ruka couldn’t understand it. There was no way the roc’s senses were better than his. Not when recognizing lies was concerned, anyway. Then what? He must have missed something, something obvious. But what? He was prepared to ask Kai when all of a sudden, Asagi shouted: “Stop!” It was not a request, it was an order, and even the horses seemed to understand for every motion stopped. Ruka was prepared to break the silence, and perhaps the seer’s neck at that point, when his senses alerted him of something. Fast as lightning, he ran towards the same direction Yomi had disappeared in, after uttering one ominous word:

“Blood.”

The others followed but the vampire was faster than the winged horses so he reached the small wooden house minutes before the others, just in time to stop the arrow flying through the air, aimed straight at Yomi’s back. Before rushing at Yomi’s side, Ruka cleared his mind, extended his senses, and like a spider feeling the slight vibrations his web would give when pray was caught in it, caught the beating of the attackers’ hearts, the strong smell of their body odour, he heard their soft breath. Then he attacked. Within two, three minutes, all five humans had had their throats ripped by one very angry vampire.

Yomi had been hit in the arm by an arrow and lost consciousness due to the pain. When Ruka returned and picked up Yomi’s frail body, the vampire realized something else: Yomi’s blood didn’t smell human. In fact, it smelt like nothing he had smelled before. When Yomi opened his eyes, suddenly the question he had been about to ask Kai lost its meaning: Yomi’s eyes were a beautiful pale amber colour. They were not human eyes.

“Ruka? You came?”

Ruka just nodded, too shocked to be able to say anything, In that moment, the other three arrived.

“Let me.” Kai asked and before Ruka could get a better grip at what was happening, Kai had grabbed Yomi’s arm, broke the arrow’s head and tore the arrow from Yomi’s limb. Yomi screamed and lost his consciousness again. Kai took some salve from his backpack, opened it, and rubbed it on the open wound. The wound closed.

“It was the eyes, wasn’t it?” Ruka asked, while softly and without realizing it, stroked Yomi’s bloody cheek.

“Yes.” Kai answered.

“What is he?” The vampire asked.

“A kitsune. I met one once, when I was a child, when there were still many more kitsune out in the open. He was my first friend, I think, and I would always get butterflies in my stomach when I saw his beautiful eyes. My father told me that the kitsune were the only ones who had that eye colour in the world, that it was proof of how cheerful and free they were.”

“That’s why I never realized who or what he was, or that he was lying.” The dragon said. “I have never seen a kitsune and dragons and kitsune have never been allies, so apart from the briefest references, my father never saw it fit I study about them. Now, I wish I had. Is he ok?”

“He will be fine.” Kai added and at the same time, with a head movement, he pointed towards the collapsed house. From one of the windows clung a body pierced with arrows. It was the blood of the house’s residents that Ruka had smelled, and to the vampire it smelled almost identical to human blood. Only from this distance, could he detect a musky tone to it.

“Why does Yomi’s blood smell differently than theirs? They must be his family, and they must be kitsune for they smell differently than humans. But Yomi doesn’t smell like them. He smells…” He scrunched his nose, he really didn’t want to say it but it didn’t seem like he had a choice “sweet.”

Kai shook his head. The king simply seemed to note his comment; there was no way he could have held the answer to that. Asagi remained silent, simply looking him straight in the eyes, as if saying: “I know. But you’re going to have to figure this one out for yourself.”

Yomi opened his eyes again and then, in a shaky voice, asked.

“My family? I didn’t have time to…”

Ruka cradled him just a little bit closer. He really had no idea why he was acting this way around the injured kitsune, but he really didn’t bother analysing himself at the moment. The king was the one to bare giving him the news.

“They’re dead.”

Yomi’s body just shook harder but he didn’t scream nor started to thrash around. He just snuggled warmer into Ruka and cried silently. The vampire was the one to carry him away from the house.

When the vampire and his burden were far enough, Kai turned towards the house. It was the first time the dragon had seen a roc transform. He had heard of their beauty but he had had no idea their golden feathers shined so in the sun, that their black eyes could seem so deep. Kai in his creature form was perhaps two meters tall, much smaller than the king’s own transformation. The roc had beautiful golden plumage, except for his long, cat-like feathery tail where it became a vibrant red, mixed with scarlet and yellow and orange and tens of other nuances of red and yellow. His eyes were deep dark pools, so dark that they seemed to suck the king’s very soul in them. His neck was slightly longer when compared to an average birds, while his feet, also covered in small, soft yellow feathers, were smaller than seemed necessary to support his weight.

Kai had stayed perfectly still for a few moments, probably in order to adapt to the change, but then his right wing glided forward, in an elegant move, in the direction of the house. A hot, desert-like wind started blowing and enveloping the house, circling it, faster and faster and faster and then the wind stopped and the house burst into flames, flames so strong that it only took seconds for it to be burned to the ground. Once the house had been turned to ashes, Kai returned to his human form.

The king, Kai and Asagi went after the vampire. Kai approached Asagi and whispered in his ear, so that the king would not hear.

“I am assuming Yomi is coming with us.” Asagi nodded.

“Did you want him to come?” Another nod.

“Did you have any part in this?” A shake of the head was the reply.

“Did you see this?”

Asagi answered:

“Our departure has already begun accelerating the process. Changes are being made. Once the changes become strong enough, another vision will come to me. Until then, there is nothing we can do but move forward.”

“But you knew him. That is why you reacted like that when he first approached us.” Asagi nodded again.

Kai said no more. There was nothing more he could say. Soon, they found Ruka, still clutching Yomi close to his chest. The three of them simply stood still and quiet. The only sound that could be heard around them was that of Yomi’s sobs.

A/N: I know I did a horrible thing to Yomi-chan, but well, that's the story... Right, other than that, I am proud to announce that the first pairing is RukaxYomi. At first I was really not sure whether I wanted to take on the same pairing again, but what can I say, they just feel right. I hope you like it and drop me a row to let me know your opinions. Hugs
