Chapter 7
“Just who the hell are you? And what gave you the right to talk to my friend like that?”
She was obviously surprised by his tone but when she ascertained who he was, she quickly plastered a fake smile on her face before answering.
“Reita-san, such a pleasure to meet you. I’m Kai’s girlfriend, Midori.”
“I thought he broke up with you. I was quite glad he did.”
The smile faded and all that was left was an icy glare. Reita didn’t even twitch, although he could feel that gaze piercing him. She was obviously someone not to be taken lightly. But if she was back together with Kai, he couldn’t quite give her a bit of his mind like that, could he?
“I’m sure Kai will love to hear what I have to say about your little conversation from earlier. I don’t know what you did to get him back, if you did, but I’m sure he’ll reconsider after hearing my narrative. Now if you’ll excuse me, the air is quite stuffy here.”
Oh, Kai would definitely hear this! He rushed back into the building. His three friends were laughing merrily and the moment he walked in Uruha’s cheeks gained a lovely flush but Reita was into too much of a hurry to notice it properly. He could barely se around him because of his anger and worry.
“Kai, did you get back together with Midori-san?”
Kai just blinked while the other two people in the room immediately sensed the change in the atmosphere and tensed.
“No, of course not. Why would you ask me that?”
“Because I’ve just witnessed her insulting our vocalist. You know what gave her the right, according to her: you two spending too much time together. Ruki couldn’t say anything, he must have been pretty upset since he just got into his car and left in a hurry. I’d appreciate it if you put her in her place. I’m glad you’re not together with that bitch. The things she said… I thought I’d punch her for a second there.”
Kai had turned white as a sheet of paper. It couldn’t be… He sprung from the chair. Minutes had passed probably since Ruki had left and Kai had a bad feeling, a very bad feeling.
“Reita, did you come by bike or car?”
“Car, why?”
“Damn, the bike would be faster. We need to get to Ruki’s apartment, fast.”
Uruha decided to speak up, worry seeping into his voice.
“Rei-chan, remember you left your bike two days ago here?”
“Oh, right, come on, Kai.”
After telling Uruha and Aoi to talk with their manager and always keep their cells close, Kai followed Reita out of the room. By the time they had gotten to the parking lot Midori was already gone, but only Reita noticed that. Kai was obviously too worried to think of anything other than getting to Ruki.
The ride with the bike only took about 15 minutes but to Kai, it seemed like an eternity before he reached Ruki’s door. He took the key out of his pocket but when trying to open he realized the door wasn’t even locked. He rushed inside, passed the living room and then rushed to the bedroom. Upon seeing Ruki’s figure on the bed, unmoving, a few pills together with the plastic bottle scattered on the floor, next to the bed, Kai’s mind just clouded. For a few brief moments he couldn’t think nor feel. It was as if he wasn’t there anymore. It must have been a nightmare, he thought. Only when Reita walked in, a few seconds after him, did Kai manage to snap himself out of the trance he was in and regain his composure. He needed a clear head.
“Reita, call the ambulance.”
Kai quickly climbed on the bed. Ruki was still alive; he could feel his pulse still steady. It hadn’t been long since he had taken the pills. He needed to wake Ruki up, but no matter how much he screamed or shook the vocalist he wouldn’t stir.
“Sleeping pills.” Reita said. “The ambulance will be here in about ten minutes.”
Kai slapped Ruki. He slapped him hard. Fortunately, Ruki finally opened his eyes and spoke softly. It was as if he was speaking in a dream, pauses between words and in a low voice. Kai had to get even closer to understand. As long as Ruki was awake everything would be fine, he forced himself into believing.
“Kai-chan… what are you…doing here?”
“What did you do, Ruki? Why?”
“Oh, I… no one needs me, Kai-chan, no one loves me. I’m just a burden for everyone.” Ruki said without stumbling too much. The words had obviously haunted him until then.
“Ruki, you’re no one’s burden. How could you think that?”
“Midori-san said so… He said so.” Ruki took a deep, shuddering breath. Kai gasped. Who was Ruki talking about?
“Who’s he?”
“I loved him… I think so… but he just didn’t care… cheated, found out… fight… he told me I’m a clingy… useless… person. Oh, and fat. (tears were running down Ruki’s cheeks) He never loved me. I’m sorry… Kai-kun… I kept you from your girlfriend… You must hate me.”
“I could never hate you, Ruki. She’s not my girlfriend. I broke up with her. I never loved her.”
Ruki had closed his eyes again.
“Ruki, talk to me! How many sleeping pills did you take?”
Moments passed before Ruki finally answered, but his eyes were still closed.
“I guess about …twenty something. Don’t remem… Oh, Rei-chan’s here too.”
Reita came closer.
“Ruki, you need to stay awake. Understand?”
“Yes, Rei-chan… Rei-chan, do you love me? Do you think I’m a burden too?”
“Of course I love you, Ru-chan. You’re my best friend. You’ve never been a burden, to anyone. Kai was practically flying here to see you. Why did you listen to that woman?”
“He did…I’m sorry, Kai. I thought a world without me… I…”
“Ruki, stay awake, please, baby.” By this point Kai just didn’t realize what he was saying anymore. As long as Ruki talked it was fine with him. His whole universe had contracted to the point where he couldn’t hear anything else but Ruki’s words and his soft breathing, getting heavier by the second.
“I wonder why he didn’t love me, Kai-chan.”
“Ruki, tell me more about him.”
“He was smart… and pretty… and talented. Couldn’t get my hands off him when we were together. He seemed to have … no problem … with that… after a few weeks.”
At that moment, the paramedics finally stepped in. They rushed to the bed, one of them started talking to Ruki while the other together with Reita lifted him, put him into the stretcher and carried him out of the room.
“Matsumoto-san, can you hear me? Do you know where you are?” the medic said.
“Kai-chan… who are they?” Ruki turned his head, trying to find Kai.
“It’s ok, Ruki. I’m here. Just answer them, ok?”
“Yes, I’m in my room.”
“Good, he’s still conscious. How long has it been since you took those pills?”
“Don’t know.”
Reita said: “We’ve been here for about ten minutes and he might have taken those ten, fifteen minutes earlier.
“How many?”
“He thinks about twenty.”
“I’m surprised he’s still awake. We absolutely need to keep him awake until we get to the hospital. Matsumoto-san, please keep talking. Don’t fall asleep!”
“But I’m sleepy. Kai-chan, can’t I fall asleep?”
“No, Ruki, you can’t. Please stay awake for me. “
“I’ll try… for you… but it’s so hard… there’s all this colorful little lights… just in front of my eyes… makes it hard to keep them… open.”
“Ruki, did you eat today?” Kai asked.
“In the morning… a bit… I thought you’d definitely ask… and be happy when I told you…I…”
“I am happy, Ruki. What did you have?”
“Eggs and coffee… toast. Kai, why is it so cold?”
With the ambulance rushing towards the hospital and Ruki taking time to say even one word fifteen minutes had past and they were close to the hospital. Both Kai and Reita had gotten in the ambulance. Reita had called their friends. Kai had just tried to keep Ruki awake. The fact that he was cold was a bad sign because they had already put about six blankets on him. He barely heard the paramedic whispering.
“He has begun shaking about three minutes ago but only now he realizes it. Matsumoto-san, please keep talking.” And then, addressing Kai: “He hasn’t noticed until now because you’ve managed to keep him distracted. He needs to keep fighting. The hospital is just two minutes away. “
Kai didn’t need to be told that. He couldn’t even handle imagining Ruki closing his eyes and not talking anymore, shivering like a leaf, growing whiter… No, it was too much.
“You’ll be warm soon, Ru-chan. Now tell me, what did you dream about last night?”
“Don’t remem… oh, wait… I do… it was unusual. I dreamt about him again… Usually that turns into a … nightmare but… this time you came… and hugged me in front of him… and he just disappeared. Would you save me, Kai? From him, from myself.”
“I would, Ruki, I will.”
The ambulance finally reached the hospital and the paramedics rushed the stretcher into the emergency room, leaving Kai and Reita in front of the door. It was at that point that Kai’s defenses almost crumbled. He sat down on a seat, running his palms over his face, trying to scare away the tears that threatened to fall. Reita sat down beside him and squeezed his shoulder, giving his silent support. It didn’t take a genius to see that Kai was almost going mad because of the fear and pain and guilt. He had listened to every single word in the car and he almost cried himself when hearing Ruki’s trembling voice. But he had also heard the assurances of the paramedics.
“They said he’s going to be ok, Kai. He never once lost consciousness. Once they get the drugs out of his system… His life isn’t in danger, Kai-kun.”
A/N: Like promised, after five days. I would have loved to heed all your requests and punch Midori's lights out but then what gentlemen would do that to a lady (although she certainly doesn't fit the definition of a lady, but still).
Oh, and Reita had never seen Midori before because Kai just simply didn't introduce her to his friends... You should be able to guess why.
So, I'll be waiting for all your comments. I love them so just keep them coming ok? It is partly because I got so many last time that writing went so smoothly. So...
