Chapter 19
Short summary: Yomi tries to talk Ruki into giving the baby up, explaining that Ruki's lover would never be happy with Ruki's death. Ruki refuses. Later, when Yomi is captured by the elders and Ruka decides to save Yomi, Ruki helps Ruka by telling him some important facts about the kitsune, enforcing his determination and placing him in contact with Uruha, the only one who could help.
..............................................
He was running in the rain. The water fell incessantly on the pavement and almost instantly evaporated making the air heavy, hard to breath and impossible to see anything a few centimeters ahead. He was running while fearing that anytime he might trip on something and have to stop. He wasn’t concerned about getting hurt, he just had to keep running, at all costs, against all better judgment, because there was someone waiting him home. He just knew that if he kept running he’d be able to get home soon.
And then, the mist started lifting and the heavy rain turned into a drizzle, a transparent curtain of water drops, reflecting here and there the houses’ lights, creating islands of soft light for a brief moment before that very light was crushed into the pavement.
And he could finally see their house. A few steps further and he’d be there. The light from the kitchen was bathing the dark, wet garden in softer colors and the dogs had already started barking, announcing his arrival. Then the door opened and a dark silhouette appeared, his loved one, the one he’d been running desperately to. A few more steps and the dark shadow became less and less dark and Ruki could already see the features he already knew so well. By the time he had reached the porch, the man was already smiling brightly, flashing a lovely dimple, and handing him a dry towel.
“Okaeri.”
“Tadaima.”
And then from inside the house he could hear small,l hurried steps. And from behind his lover a little fairy’s face appeared.
“Otousan, okaeri.”
“Tadaima.”
...........................
Ruki woke with a start. The dream had been a bit unsettling at first but it had turned out so sweet in the end, so much so that he didn’t want to wake up. On the other hand, now that he was awake he could actually feel it. He had never thought the sensations would be so strong. No actually, strong wasn’t the word since there was no discomfort or actual tactile feeling, just this indescribable feeling enveloping him. He could feel it, his little fairy. It had been a little over a month since that faithful day and he could already sense her presence and sensations. Could you even call it sensations? After all, it was pure happiness, nothing more and certainly nothing less. There was nothing to bother her, since she was constantly feeding on the memories and images Ruki selectively let her see, nourishing in the love that he and Kai, unconsciously, gave her, all pleasant and love filled images. She would turn out quite a spoiled child, sometimes Ruki joked with himself.
Ruki had never been happier than in that month. He had decided to forget about all bad things, just live for the moment, enjoy the love he had and that new feeling of being depended upon entirely. He had hoped that she would be human, that somehow Kai’s genes would be stronger and even though her being human would have meant so much more pain and suffering for him, it would have been better for future prospects. He could have treasured her longer also.
Fox children, especially born between male foxes, evolved extraordinarily fast, due to the fact that they mostly needed a plentiful energy source. Male foxes bodies weren’t made for carrying children so physiologically speaking it was the same as with human males but foxes had immense spiritual power and the “hoshi no tama”. Due to the jewel the impossible became possible and it only took four months.
Therefore, it didn’t surprise him after all, the fact that he had started feeling her. What did surprise him was the way she reacted to Kai, or better said, the way his body had started reacting to Kai. He needed to be together with his lover at all times, it was as if being separated for even a second would somehow make the world come to an end. The baby obviously needed the same thing since when Ruki was in Kai’s embrace, the feeling of happiness that seeped through the tama into his thoughts was intoxicating, almost like a drug. But the most surprising thing was Kai seeming to need the same thing. Due to both their efforts their time together had increased and when they were together Ruki was always in his lover’s arms, surrounded by warmth, protected, feeling safe and utterly content.
“Guys, today too? Are you stuck together or something?” Reita would say.
Aoi, of course, was never one to pass making a joke.
“I need to go tomorrow to that music shop. Need me to buy you a drum kit, Ruki? Or maybe a Kai shaped mike?”
Aoi and Reita were pretty much happy having something to joke about, Ruki verified once again.
Uruha had noticed from the start, as expected but contrary to Ruki’s every expectation, he said not one thing in disapproval.
“I’m happy for you two. I’m sure you’re going to have a beautiful, talented child. And just in case, I’ll be the one protecting her in the future from all those admirers.” He said with a smile on his lips.
“Thank you, Uruha-kun. You’ll have to talk to Kai-kun about that though. He’ll be the one in her life after all.”
At that, Uruha’s smile faltered and his eyes grew sadder.
“Yeah. I’ll make sure to keep both of them happy.”
It was a firm promise that Ruki hadn’t foreseen but for which he was extremely happy, especially since she would need someone to explain things, not human things. Uruha was a guardian and he was in love with a fox (Ruki guessed he’d conquer Hitsugi’s heart pretty soon), making them the perfect guardians for his little girl.
Two days after the dream, while he was lying in sleeping Kai’s arms, he was waiting for sleep to come after the extremely strenuous and pleasant activity they had performed, but somehow sleep didn’t seem to come easily so instead he was just drowning in the peace surrounding him, when he was contacted. He had expected it for quite some time but it still caught him unprepared. He untangled from the bed sheets and silently stepped out of their bedroom, making sure that Kai was asleep.
The message was short and it was just an order, no disagreement or negotiation of the given period of time possible. He only had three months left to arrange it all, making sure that everything pertaining his mortal existence disappeared, the elders had said. But three months were more than enough after all, since in less than that time he wouldn’t be anywhere anymore, after all.
Why was it that he accepted everything with so much ease lately? Even when faced with the hard, cruel truth (he felt it was wrong to use those words in his current circumstances though) he still couldn’t feel the same pain and hopefulness he had felt before. Only now did he understand what it truly meant to be so content with your life that even if you died the next morning you wouldn’t regret anything.
Time seemed to drag slowly by, shrouding them in its cocoon. Hours became days and then days became weeks and without any of them realizing anything, a month and a half had already gone by. It still didn’t show so no one apart from him and Uruha had any idea what he was hiding, until one day one more very important person found out and just like that, time started flying again.
It had been one of those rare days when it was just impossible for them to be together before nightfall because of some commitments Kai had with their manager. Meanwhile, Ruki had wanted to go out and stretch his legs for a bit, smell the fresh air. (Well, that was if Tokyo’s air could be considered the least bit fresh) His feet had carried him to the park.
And in the park he had met Yomi and the first person in a long time that reminded him of what he was that he was about to lose. And still, not even Yomi managed to change his mind. In stead, his child became even more precious, if that was possible because Yomi had made him realize just how limited his time actually was and he would treasure every minute of it.
The more you treasure something the easier it slips between your fingers. Ruki felt that for himself. Every second ticking away, he enjoyed to the fullest. He lived solely for his love, actually his two loves, and tried not to leave any regrets behind. That thought made him want to help Yomi and Ruka. He had wanted to give them the happiness he had now and for them to remember him and continue being equally happy from then on, no, to feel the happiness doubled because in some way, they’d be living his fairy tale too.
So Ruki helped Yomi and Ruka. He was happy to see the determination, the fire in Ruka’s eyes when he had decided he would do anything to get Yomi back, no matter the cost. It was the same fire that Ruki knew burned inside him and Kai. Yomi had actually done the exact same thing he had tried to make Ruki give up: sacrifice himself. Yomi had contradicted himself and Ruki couldn’t gloat with an “I told you so” merely because of the circumstances. If they had been still kids playing together he would have made sure to tell Yomi as many times as possible that he had been right.
But his time came before he found out if Ruka’s exploit had been successful. Now, he could only tell Kai the truth, the whole truth, see the face of his little girl and disappear.
PS: Yes, I know it's a horrible cliffhanger but I figured it would just make you wait desperately for the last part. I can't believe it's almost over. It's been hectic lately and I haven't really had time to write properly so I hoped it turned out ok. I could have detailed more about the pregnancy more but, for those out there who are not fans of this thing, I figured an emotional approach would be better. Was I right? I urge you to leave me comments and hug in advance all those who will. Lots of kisses and until the last time!
