Chapter 17

He didn’t have the chance to talk about the matter to Uruha again the next couple of weeks since each of them had several separate magazine photo shoots and interviews and even practice hours had had to be reduced a bit so when they met it was really all about their music. Ruki had almost forgot about the entire conversation with Uruha and was enjoying those busy but fulfilling days. He was tired but he was so unbelievably happy at Kai’s side. Sometimes when he thought about it he even thought he was being corny, I mean getting your dose of energy just by waking up in another man’s arms in the morning… it sounded like a fairytale.

But life isn’t a fairytale and Ruki realized that quite suddenly when he got an unexpected phone call from Uruha one Wednesday morning,  unexpected especially since Uruha was supposed to be at an interview, therefore busy, therefore not having time to call him.

“Ruki-kun, we need to talk. It’s really important, so can you meet me in an hour at that Starbucks close to the office?”

Ruki had replied affirmatively and that was how the phone call had ended. An hour later Ruki was waiting for Uruha at a table, wondering what it could be about, when the guardian walked in, accompanied by, to Ruki’s bewilderment, Hitsugi.

They both found Ruki immediately, and before approaching the tables had ordered and brought their coffees to the table, probably in order not to be disturbed, Ruki considered. And that made him even more edgy.

“Hi, Ruki-kun, long time no see. I just wished it were under better circumstances.”

Ruki was already shaking.

“Ruki-kun, don’t be that frightened. It’s not that bad, well at least not yet,  I’m afraid it will have some repercussions. though The kitsune are moving again and they might contact you…” Uruha had said.

“Why?” Ruki had asked.

“Yomi ran away.” Hitsugi had stated quite plainly although Ruki could distinguish the emotion in his voice. “They were trying to make him… well, you know, don’t you?”

It was a rhetoric question. Of course Ruki knew. There was not a kitsune in the world that didn’t know what Yomi’s role was supposed to be but few were those who knew that Yomi was completely adverse to it. Ruki had been a friend of Yomi’s, not a very close one ,as Hitsugi, but they had had their fun and talks together and Ruki knew just how difficult it had been for the seven-tailed. There had been a time when he had thought that stubbornness was plain stupidity, partly out of his want to have the same powers and be respected tin the same way, but that thought had never been further away from him than it was now, listening to Hitsugi.

“So he found the chance and ran away. I don’t even know how he did it. He said he wouldn’t involve me but well, I have my ways of finding him out. Do you believe at first when he had left I had no idea even where he was going or if he was still alive?! If it weren't for...” Hitsugi had said and had glanced at Uruha.

Ruki had to wonder how these two knew each other and why they seemed somehow…close even though Ruki knew that any type of friendship between guardians and fox was prohibited.

Hitsugi continued: “I know where he is now. He’s fine, and I just thought I’d tell you that but they’re chasing after him. Because of his powers he can somehow keep them off his tails for some time but things are getting complicated and… The elders are starting to become harsher. The ones not in the human world are being carefully “educated” and not allowed to come here. I’m sneaking out, of course, with Uruha’s help. And the ones outside have started being called back. It’s progressive of course, there have been just a hand full of cases until now but as Yomi keeps hiding, they’re bound to take it even further.”

Hitsugi had stopped, allowing Ruki to digest everything. His fears had come to life, Ruki realized and he felt it as if someone had somehow cut off his oxygen reserve.  He was sweating all over ad his hands were grabbing the end of the table as if he'd be swept off otherwise. He couldn’t breathe, and he couldn’t think or feel anything other than pain because there was just Kai in his mind and… He couldn’t think that way. Not then, in a place full of people. So he forced himself to pay attention to the two of them and not think about anything until he got home. Gods, home, his home!

“Is Yomi-chan truly ok? Where is he? I mean you don’t need to tell me the place or anything just how he’s been, how he’s doing.” Ruki said.

“Yeah, he actually found about a week ago a really nice human that allowed him to stay with him and is taking care of him as if he were part of the family or something. Never thought I’d see the day where a human would just pick up someone and trust him or her so blindly. I think he’s a really nice guy and that’s one of the reasons why I’m worried.” Hitsugi said.

“You’re worried because he just might decide to stay in one place and get caught?” Ruki tried.

“I’m worried about him giving everything up for this human the way I suspect you plan on doing.” Hitsugi said looking him straight in the eyes.

“What the… How do you know?”

Uruha then spoke for the first time.

“I told him about you and Kai. I thought it’s better if he knew that he could trust you. You needed to find out before you actually got contact ed by the elders. And I couldn’t have told you myself well because... you do remember that talk we had a couple of weeks ago, right? I’m sorry. Sometimes I really do think the rules we are sworn to are too strict.”

“Ruki-kun, don’t do anything hasty. I don’t want to see another friend in a lot of trouble. I don’t understand anything about all this love stuff, you know me… but please think everything carefully.”

It so happened that while Hitsugi was saying that last sentence Ruki had glanced at Uruha and he had unintentionally seen through the man’s heart, seen the sadness and the hope mingled together. And it occurred to him that Uruha was in love with Hitsugi or at least had strong feelings towards him, feelings that he was obviously keeping secret.

Just then, Ruki’s cell phone rang. When Ruki checked the ID, he was relieved to see it was his lover. He picked up, explained where he was, assured Kai that everything was perfectly fine (lying again, he thought) and promised to return home soon. He really couldn’t wait to back to Kai, he had to take advantage of the time he had left… so he told the guys he was sorry but needed to be heading home. Hitsugi just nodded and said it was fine and wished him luck while Uruha accompanied him outside and gave him a hug and then said:

“I know it doesn’t help much but if there’s anything I can do, I’ll do it, for you guys. If you tell him, Ruki, I can do more. And I don’t want to pressure you but I really think you should tell him.”

“I have to go now, Uruha-san. Thank you, for wanting to warn me. I know you were the one to talk Hitsugi into coming and I’m really grateful. And I figured out unwillingly how you feel about him so think about having him to take care of so be careful too, ok? Don’t do something stupid.”

“Me and stupid, we just don’t work together, don’t you know that by now!” Uruha grinned, obviously trying to lighten up the mood  and perhaps et away from a subject he didn't plan on opening. Ruki just smiled and headed for the subway, not allowing himself to really think about everything yet; he first needed to get home, to Kai. But he felt the pressure of the one big question nagging in the back of his mind: “What comes now?” and at the same time the weight of the one and only impossible thing for him to do “I will never leave him.”

PS: I don't know how many of you are actually waiting for this because you like it so it's so hard to actually write it. It's not like I'm in a slump or anything but I really am the type that likes to be pushed from behind so I do hope you'll live me a sign to know you're out there. The story is very close to its end, I guess about 3-4 chapters left. And if you have problems regarding mpreg, this is the time to stop reading. I promise I'm not turning Ruki into a woman or anything exaggerated like that and I'm keeping it light.  See you next time, hugs!
