Chapter 2
Ruki woke up surrounded by pleasant warmth, the sun’s rays filtering through the luscious curtains and bathing the bedroom in soft, gentle colors. He was gladder than ever that he had picked those indigo curtains. The first thing he looked for when he woke up was the source of that wonderful warmth that, if he thought about it, could only be Kai. Indeed, the drummer was so snuggled up in the sheets that Ruki had somehow missed him when he had opened his eyes. And Kai pretended to be a morning person, Ruki huffed.
Should I wake him? Should I not? Ruki was thinking. While giggling to himself he suddenly jumped the sleeping drummer than instantly sprang up, releasing a scream suspiciously similar to a girl’s. Ruki just couldn’t contain his laughter at seeing Kai’s frightened face and then his pout at realizing what exactly had woken him up.
“Mou, Ruki-kun. How old are you?”
Ruki just ignored him in favor of continuing giggling. He just loved to put that pout on their drummer’s lips. The dimples were lovely put he loved the pout so much more, since it was so unlike their drummer to react that way, unless he was being teased by his friends and Ruki secretly prided himself for being the one that put that expression there more than on a couple occasions.
“Oh, I see, you feel like going back to kindergarten ha?” Kai said. “Then I might as well join you.”
And after saying that he jumped Ruki and started tickling the lights out of him. Ruki was laughing so hard he felt he was going to die. Kai just loved seeing their vocalist like that. After all, Ruki wasn’t this good humored all the time; actually he was rarely this good humored. Sometimes he was quite able of biting your head off and most of the time he was pretty a down to earth guy, completely immersed in music and the band, Kai thought. Somehow he had gotten so absorbed in his thoughts that for a few moments he had stopped paying attention to Ruki and just continued tickling him, almost as if it were out of reflex, but then he suddenly noticed something wrong. Ruki had stopped laughing and he was panting hard, his eyes closed and his face scrunched. Ruki was certainly not having fun anymore.
“Ruki-kun, are you ok? I’m so sorry. I should have stopped earlier.” Kai quickly apologized.
Ruki opened his brown eyes and just shook his head saying:
“It’s ok, Kai-chan. I just got tired from all that laughing, that’s all.”
“You got tired, Ruki? You bang your head and put your soul out on a platter during two hour long concerts and you got tired after a few seconds of tickling? And your face looks more in pain to me than tired.”
Kai stopped earlier than planned when noticing Ruki’s dirty look.
“Fine, I’ll drop it for now.” Kai said. “Does it hurt anywhere?”
“Just a splitting headache.”
“Here.”
And Kai put his hands on Ruki’s temples, massaging slowly, trying to soothe the vocalist’s pain.
“That feels good, Kai-chan. How come your hands are so cold though your body is all warm?”
“Oh, always been like this. Better?”
“A little, thanks.”
“I’m sure you’ll feel better after a nice breakfast.”
Ruki just scrunched his face.
“I’m not really hungry, Kai-kun.”
“Oh, you’re not giving me that again, Ruki. You’re going to eat and then we’re going to the doctors. I just need to make a phone call to see that he’s in.”
“But Kai….”
“No, Ruki. We settled this yesterday. We’re going and that’s it. Don’t make me carry you there.”
And this time the one pouting was Ruki. Kai just decided to ignore the cute face and proceeded to the kitchen to cook breakfast. While the coffee was preparing itself in the coffee maker (technology really comes in handy, Kai thought), he dialed their personal PSC appointed doctor and made an appointment for that afternoon. After he hung up, he fried the eggs and the bacon, toasted some bread and abundantly spread cheese and butter on the slices. Kai could eat anything without growing fat and Ruki actually was too skinny, so he wasn’t bothering checking the calories; as far as he was concerned, the more the better.
Ruki didn’t eat much though. Barely touched the bread and Kai practically had to force the eggs and ham down his neck but in the end, Kai was satisfied that the vocalist had indeed eaten what would be considered a normal breakfast. He wasn’t expecting him t eat all the tings he had put on the table anyway. After breakfast he informed Ruki about their appointment. They would have to drop by the company first to get some papers Kai needed to work out and from there they’d head straight for the doctor’s.
“How about you get the files and I’ll meet you at the doctor’s?” Ruki asked.
Kai smelled something fishy.
“Yeah, so you won’t show up. No way, Ruki-kun.”
“I wouldn’t do that since you already made the appointment…” Ruki tried again.
“I’m not letting you out of my sight today Ruki-kun, no matter what you say, so you better get used to it. By the way you have fifteen minutes to get ready.”
“What?!” Ruki almost screamed.
“You took a shower already right? And it’s not like you’re going to the doctor’s all made up and fancy dressed so fifteen minutes are more than enough. And you better not lock yourself in the bathroom, Ruki-kun. I mean it!” Kai warned.
Ruki was furious. He was positively boiling, Kai could see that and he was surprised that the vocalist didn’t curse him or offer any more protests. It really seemed that Ruki was too tired even for that. And Kai was very suspicious of precisely that tiredness. That’s why in less than four hours they had a doctor’s appointment.
Ruki actually complied with Kai’s request-more like order. He was ready in that short amount of time, just wearing the usual tight fit jeans, a nice T-shirt and the leather jacket. No make-up, no contacts, no hair done. It was certainly not the J-rocker Kai was escorting to his car, but his friend and somehow Kai thought they should be using their real names. Habit dies hard though; in time they had gotten so used to the new ones that they addressed themselves like that most of the time. Sure Reita and Uruha went a long, long way back so they addressed themselves with their childhood names more often but as far as Kai was concerned it was so much more normal to call everyone by their stage names. It wasn’t just him though. At some level, they all had somehow forgotten where themselves and their stage persona really started or maybe they had somehow just fused together. After all they were doing something related to music or the band in one way or the other pretty much all the time so really, who could blame them? Could they be called workaholics? Kai laughed internally when wondering that. He wasn’t sure about the others but he certainly was turning into one, especially after breaking up with…
“Kai?”
Kai snapped to reality.
“Jeez, what were you thinking about so hard? The light switched to green, you know?”
Kai immediately pressed the acceleration pedal.
“Sorry about that.”
“It’s ok. It was fun hearing all those people honking you for a change. Although it would have been more fun if it was for speeding…” Ruki smirked.
Kai just rolled his eyes at that comment. The ride went on without other disturbances. They got at the recording studio, picked up the files Kai needed and then drove to the doctor’s office, which was actually pretty close to the company.
Kai was actually really proud of their vocalist who just got out of the car, marched right into the doctor’s office and sat on the waiting sofa, obviously determined to go through with this.
“Wow, Ruki-kun, I must say, you’ve grown up a bit since this moment. And there I was thinking I’d have to chain you and drag you in.”
Ruki shot him a death glare.
Okay, maybe it’s not a good idea to piss him off now. Kai thought.
After a few moments, the doctor was out. The doctor was a man in his fifties but with very little white hairs and holding himself quite nicely. You wouldn’t give him more than forty years but he had actually more than thirty years of experience, or that’s what Kai had been told. Their company had appointed each band their own doctor, someone that was dependable and could keep everything confidential, the members had been informed before they signed the contract. They didn’t visit him that often though. Until now there had been no major problems, nothing that a good night’s rest couldn’t solve and Kai desperately hoped that now it would only need a week’s rest. Or if not, he just hoped this doctor was truly dependable.
Ruki went in, leaving Kai waiting outside. He would have preferred to go in. It wasn’t like he couldn’t, even if he wasn’t family. After all, the doctor had received instructions from the company that if any problems arose the band members or managers would be informed. The band members especially could always be there for one another, all the time, but only if the patient requested it or was somehow unable to request it. Ruki hadn’t. Actually Kai knew that Ruki didn’t want him in there. Kai knew it was partly because Ruki was a bit more than pissed at him and partly because he thought that nothing was wrong and he wasn’t a baby to need his mom by his side. Kai understood that. Really, he did, but he still wished he could be in there.
A/n: So what will the doctor tell Ruki? I'm pretty sure you have your guesses.
It wasn't the most exciting chapter but I need to draw the characters relationship and I really like to keep you in tension. I know, I'm a bad girl. I'm also sorry for keeping you waiting so long. Couldn't finish this earlier. Bows and apologizes. I hope you'll still support me though. Until next time! And Merry Christmas again!
