Falling in love with a fox -chapter 13, Ruki/Kai

Nov 29, 2008 01:59

Ruki sighed contently. He had made the drummer eat and drink in order to help the body recover the lost blood and the sleepiness was also an effect of that. He could heal wounds but not replenish blood. He stayed a bit longer, watching Kai sleep peacefully and then undressed him and put some night wear on Kai and than lied on the bed next to him, knowing Kai would freak out in the morning if he wasn’t there.

In the morning, Kai woke up suddenly, startled. He had dreamt about Ruki and he desperately wanted to make sure the vocalist was safe. So when he woke up facing a sleeping Ruki, his heart did the craziest happy dance. Ruki was really ok, unharmed apparently. Kai was very happy indeed. He was still kind of dizzy but he got up, took a shower and prepared them some breakfast. He had never been hungrier it seemed.

Ruki woke up to the smell of French toast. He had had some in a restaurant a few weeks back and he had loved it. Going into the kitchen and seeing Kai cooking actually made him exclaim:

“You actually cooked that? Wow!”

The drummer was amused to see Ruki’s large eyes.

“Yeah, I love cooking. Take a seat, it’ll be ready in a bit.”

In a few minutes they had both eaten their breakfast and Ruki had brace himself for the questioning that indeed came:

“So, Ruki-kun, last night…”

“I told you, Kai. The ropes got loose and I only managed to punch the lights out of that guy because he wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t actually wrestle with him like you did.”

“No, it’s not that. I just wanted to know if you were alright. Did they do anything to you? In the van for example?”

Only then did Ruki grasp the meaning of Kai’s concerned glance throughout their breakfast and he hurried to assure the drummer nothing had happened. And in turn, he asked a question too.

“Kai, how come you can fight that well? I mean, I can drum myself but drumming doesn’t exactly make you capable of taking down two gorillas like that.”

“Oh, I thought you’d ask. You see, when I quit high school in order to follow my music passion, my parents couldn’t understand at first. I used to spend the days locked up in my room, practicing on the drums. They thought it wasn’t healthy for me so we struck a bargain: I’d go to a karate class two times a weak. They figured meeting other high schoolers there would probably make him go back to school plus it was healthy doing some sport instead of passing the days locked up. I did learn to defend myself but I didn’t go back to high school though.” Kai said and grinned.

That made sense, Ruki thought. Kai didn’t seem like the type, he was skinny and not the muscle type and neither did he have that sort of personality, but Ruki had witnessed everything with his eyes. Kai’s words didn’t surprise him anymore.

“Maybe I should take some classes too?” Ruki joked. He didn’t actually need them with his powers.

Kai became serious though and answered.

“You don’t need to. I’ll be there to protect you. I’m sorry I didn’t manage yesterday. Who knows what could have happened if you hadn’t broken free.” Ruki could see the guilt in the man’s eyes. He couldn’t believe any human would have such a pure heart. No one actually risked their lives to help a friend, did they? So Ruki did something he shouldn’t have done: he took a peek into Kai’s thoughts and what he saw had him blushing: Kai’s memories of his family, Kai’s dreams: the happy family living in the suburbs with three kids and a dog, him teaching them the drums, images of him and the other band members smiling away, being happy, joking around, Kai watching over them, Kai’s thoughts of him. He stopped there. He shouldn’t pry anymore. He was aware he shouldn’t have started in the first place. He could trust Kai to tell him the truth.

“Kai, how come you were there?”

“I followed you after practice. I’ve been following you since that day at the club.” Kai answered honestly, the guilt in his eyes being even more obvious to Ruki know.

“Why? Were you worried for me?” Ruki asked even though he kind of knew the answer already. The answer that came still surprised him though.

“Partly yes. At first I also didn’t trust you. I really thought there was something bad going on. I watched you and there was always something troubling you, as if you were struggling with a decision. I also saw the way you were looking at me, with apprehension and distrust and maybe a bit of fear at first. I thought I had to follow you. This last week I’ve seen you change, you seemed to have reached a decision but you still seemed sad and apprehensive and I wanted to know why. I’m truly sorry for following you around and distrusting you Ruki-kun. I really am a horrible person, aren’t I? And I didn’t even manage to protect in the end.”

Ruki’s surprise didn’t last long because he realized he wasn’t mad at all at Kai. The man had been right. He had had a hidden agenda, he had thought about leaving. He had joined the band for the wrong reasons. And he was awed by the way Kai had figured him out just by looking at him, even though he knew he was an expert at hiding his feelings. The kitsune were well trained for that. Still, Kai had read him like an open book and Ruki felt closer to the man now, as if they had this unbreakable bond.

“Kai, of course you’re not a terrible person. You actually risked your life for me back there. And I can’t blame you for thinking that way, especially after seeing me running after Megumi in the club. I can’t thank you enough and really stop blaming yourself because you should be giving yourself a reward instead. And I promise Kai, no more hiding. You were right, I was struggling with something and I’ve made my decision. You don’t need to worry. This band and you guys are the most important in my life now. You are my precious friends and have become my family.”

And Ruki was completely honest. Damn his mission and the kitsune. He had figured out how wrong they had been. Sure there were scum in the world, maybe even more than good people but the good people were worth it. He could finally realize that because Ruki couldn’t imagine a world without Kai’s smile anymore. Just the kind of smile Kai was showing him then, content sparkling in the drummer’s eyes. Ruki couldn’t have been surer of his choice.

That day, after leaving Kai’s apartment, he contacted the kitsune again and did not report truthfully. He didn’t mention everything that had happened. He just stated coldly: “it was impossible because se couldn’t conceive”. And that was it. He was to stand by for a new mission but Ruki knew it would never come. Once you failed at a mission as a kitsune of lower rank you would never be given another one again. Ruki couldn’t be happier about that. It didn’t use to be like that though. The resentment against humans had changed their ways for the worse. Ruki realized now that the kitsune were actually becoming like the humans, maybe even worse and he wished someone would stop them and make them realize they were wrong before everything blew out of proportion. He couldn’t be that someone though. He just wasn’t strong enough and he didn’t have the will anyway.

Notes: I know it's short and not a lot of action since it's more like a plot-chapter, development wise. I promise though the heavy action is like a few chapters away. Let me know how you like them though or if you have any comments or criticism or anything.
