You know, that's something that bothered the crap out of me about the Potter Books. To me it felt like Rowling was just doing it to give a giant middle finger to the countless slashfic writers out there - which is kind of hilarious, but I concur; it's one of the only really glaring shortcomings of the books, and I really wish that the pacing of the relationships was done better.
As for the spoilers, you could do what I did: Spread false ones. Since the people screaming the spoilers almost never actually read the books, and are easily fooled by Photoshops, you'd be amazed by how many I got to believe that the big spoiler was that Hermione was killed by a Dumbledore Zombie in the last book.
Yeah. I mean she gave vague things that could be constituted as hints early on, but they were so iffy that they could be taken either way. Honestly from the hints I read into the series, it seemed more likely that Harry would eventually hook up with Hermione. The relationship with Ron and Hermione was hinted at to about the same extent I saw, just different ways to look at it. Book 6 just basically took what could have been and went charging at it full force. It was so hard on into it that I was concerned that if they did get together their relationship would be a very unhappy one full of abuse. I mean look at how viciously they sniped at each other, physically and emotionally, because they felt some pangs of jealousy. It unnerved me greatly
