Poem: "The Glass Cat"

Oct 29, 2022 03:07

This is the linkback poem for the October 4, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was originally hosted by Dreamwidth user Dialecticdreamer.  It was written outside the regular prompt calls, inspired by "The Glass Cat" square in my 9-1-22 card for the Land of Oz Bingo fest.  This poem belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.

"The Glass Cat"

[September 2022]

It has been handed down
for years, and by now
nobody remembers
who made it or how
the tradition began.

The Glass Cat is a figurine
of a cat sitting upright on
a base of cut crystal.

The cat is made of
oilslick glass adorned
with pansies, crocus,
spring beauties, and
blue grape hyacinths.

It is passed around
from one fundraiser
to another as a symbol
of cats in need of help.

The Glass Cat presides
over small silent auctions
and grand galas alike.

Once, it even attended
a Christie's auction,
but even there,

it was never for sale.

Notes:

See the Glass Cat.

Oilslick glass has a metallic, iridescent sheen and swirls of different colors similar to oil refracting on the surface of water.

Christie's is a British auction house famous for selling high-value art.
