Poem: "The Tapestry of Nocciolaia"

Dec 10, 2012 13:45

This poem was inspired by the "friendship" square on my first card for the Cottoncandy Bingo fest.  It has been sponsored by minor_architect.  It belongs to the series Fiorenza the Wisewoman, which you can explore further via the Serial Poetry page.  Read about the sonnet form online.

The Tapestry of Nocciolaia
-- a sonnet

Though Don Candido preaches, scowls, and scolds
He heeds the gifts that Fiorenza holds.
Mad Ercole may find his thoughts a maze,
But Fiorenza walks with him most days.

Bettina holds her husband by the hand,
And gives her thanks for Fiorenza's stand.
Sienna does a favor for her friend,
And Fiorenza's there with herbs to lend.

The village is a tapestry of lives,
Its warp and weft the women and the men
Whose friendship weaves a fabric fine and strong.
The family ties of husbands and of wives
Are spun of love, and relatives are kin,
But friends are chosen just for their heart's song.
