Estrella War 2009 hospitality questions

 Hmmmm...

Okay, in brief-- and those of you who aren't SCA or interested in SCA stuff, feel free to skip this; it'll be total Greek, trust me.

As of yesterday evening I heard that the staff for the next Estrella War have plans to drop the budget for the Hospitality Tent and supplies very drastically, as well as doing away with their cart.  Last ( Read more... )

So, it seems that unlike previous years where hospitality ran all over hither and yon..each organization will be responsible for hospitality.

Its a restructuring it seems of how things work...a more city state versus global thing. So, I would expect that security point would have soup etc ready and would be bring it out with the shift changes etc. It also sounds like they are restructuring what is being "secured" through out the event to make it easier for volunteers.

All I can say is 1)If security needs food donations..talk to me in january and I'll make a costco run, 2)see how this new strategy works and give feed back next year.

**nods** I admit, I'm not happy with this restructuring entirely-- to me, 'hospitality' should be in charge of just that, helping to make things hospitable for both nonworking attendees and staff alike. They did a magnificent job-- I can't stress that enough, and I did my best to make sure they knew how much we appreciated them (me and many more; we all thanked 'em profusely.)

The CostCo run suggestion's great; wonder if maybe we could do some sort of fundraiser specifically geared to this sort of thing--? **tentatively sticks toe into the water**

It was also mentioned that perhaps the Baronies might want to step up a little and help tend to their members who are volunteering. That sounds like a good idea to me and I might be up for that, but probably not until the war after this upcoming one, since I have chosen Disneyland and a happy husband over Estrella this time around.

But war IS Disneyland! You just have to think outside the box ... a lot. There's the sheep signs, and the royal pavilion can be Snow White's Castle, and the archery range can be Frontierland complete with shooting expedition and if it's muddy again, we can pull a cart through it and have it be Splash Mountain!

Ysabet? Sweetie? Dark blue on olive green is -not- an easy read. Could you change the text to a white or a pale blue for easier reading? I had to highlight and squint to read the e-mails. ^^;;

From the sound of things, they're getting rid of a lot of the farther points, therefore removing the need of hospitality. How this security set-up is going to go, I'd like to see before I volunteered again.

Ooops-- good point. **changes font to light green** There, that ought to work better.

...and I still don't like the idea of reducing things that much. **makes Cranky Face expression** It'll be interesting to see how things develop-- bet I'm not the only person who'll email about this.

As one who regularly puts in 40 or so hours per war, and usually at night, I have to agree that I want hospitality to be there.
Having security, or as it is now going to be called "The Watch" "take care of it's own" sounds fine and dandy until you take into account that the reason I have pulled 12 hour shifts on a fairly regular basis was because we could not get people to come in at Midnight or 4am and work a four hour shift. If security can not get the people needed to releave the regular posts, how is it going to have the manpower to "take care of it's own". When security is able to get the manpower, one of the rovers is kept busy as it is just shuttling the new people to the needed posts, so that kills part of the available manpower right there.
I can see cutting hospitality during the day if needed, and cutting it where, if you are getting off a shift, you can get something to eat, but not at night when volunteers are pulling longer shits and working in lousy conditions.

Just my 2 cents.

TOTALLY agree, especially about the night bit. I remember how hard you worked. Maybe you should email them? The autocrats need to hear this.
