At Starfleet, Kirk used to run laps. He was never a runner like Chekov is, didn't have long distances in him (although, maybe that's just because he'd never worked out how) but he always liked putting music on and running, and he didn't have to do much thinking. At the Academy, they were pretty keen on the idea of muscle memory, doing things over and over again until they became second nature. For James T. Kirk, running was a little bit like that; he just put his head down and let lungs and muscles take over

On the island, he didn't have music to run to and the heat had a different quality to it. The sweat's pouring off him and he slows to a stop, bending over to catch his breath and then dragging his shirt up over his head, tucking it into the waistband of his shorts and tipping his head back to look up at the blue sky through the trees.

He was still looking for the Enterprise every chance he got.
