[Background]
Prior to transferring to a new school, Ritsuka witnessed the murder of his elder brother, Seimei. His brother was tied to his chair and burned right in front of him. His reason for transferring spread to the faculty and then the students of his class. He had some trouble making friends, but a girl confronted him-her name was Yuiko and she persisted to become his friend. He tried his best to make himself look bad so she go away, but Yuiko said something that touched his nerves and he ran out. He then was suddenly grabbed by a mysterious man who introduced himself as Soubi Agatsuma. He explained that he is Seimei’s friend and his fighter unit. After wards, Ritsuka dragged Soubi out to make memories by taking a bunch of photos. They were soon interrupted by another fighter unit who goes by the name of ‘Breathless.’ Soubi instantly used a spell to send them to another place so they could escape and avoid the fight. He explained to Ritsuka about his true name being Beloved, which was what Seimei said his true name was.
The next day, Ritsuka visited his therapist for his weekly sessions. The issue with him is his split personality problem. He couldn’t remember anything besides the memories he had from two years ago from the incident. It is said that Ritsuka’s mother had been abusing him and claiming that he isn’t her son and there is someone else in her son’s body. When Ritsuka comes home, his mother continues to abuse him.
Soubi explained to Ritsuka about being Seimei’s former fighter and now according to his will that he becomes Ritsuka’s fighter and he is now Soubi’s sacrifice.
A sacrifice is someone who takes damage, hence the term sacrifice and the fighter is someone who is able to case offensive and defensive spells, hence the term fighter.
Later that night, Soubi arrived through Ritsuka’s window as he cracked the will left by Seimei. He found the ones responsible for Seimei’s death and they call themselves, the seven moons.
Besides the gossip and chatter about his brother at school, he was confronted by ‘Breathless’ again. Ritsuka sought to find some answers, but the team refused to give him any at all and Soubi appeared once more with another battle. The battle ended swiftly and Ritsuka accepted Yuiko’s friendship. A boy by the name of Yayoi assumed the two was dating and approached them, he was about to pick a fight with Ritsuka but he confirmed that they were only friends and nothing more. When school ended, Soubi met up with them again and gave him a cell phone so they can contact each other. Little by little, Ritsuka was able to learn a few things from the mysterious Soubi.
Another night at home with his mother, Ritsuka tries his best to figure out the things his former self likes and doesn’t like. He brought up about the brother and father day to his mother and realized there wasn’t anyone that was able to come. Sitting his room, Soubi came back to him soaking wet. He asked Ritsuka to pierce his ears for him as a symbol of love for him. Ritsuka was still figuring who exactly was Seimei’s murderers was and asked Soubi for some answers. The older man refused to tell him anything, because he was ordered not to by Seimei. Soubi has heard about the father and brother day at school and wanted to go, but Ritsuka ordered him to go back and don’t come to school. Of course, Soubi didn’t enter the school but still waited for him outside.
At school, Ritsuka found Yuiko being bullied and tried to teach them a lesson and was stopped by his teacher. Ritsuka ran out when she wanted to talk to him and was approached by the ‘Breathless’ team again. They warned Ritsuka about Soubi and left. When he walked home from school, he interrupted the conversation between his teacher and Soubi.
Meanwhile, Soubi led Ritsuka elsewhere when they were approached by another fighter unit known as ‘Sleepless.’ After the team was defeated, Ritsuka gained a letter in hopes to find more clues leading to his brother’s murder. Inside the letter was series of numbers and letters that didn’t make sense. During school, he refused his friends’ offers to joins clubs and since they were on Wednesday, he couldn’t. That day was used for his therapy sessions.
On a day when school wasn’t in session, Ritsuka and Yuiko went to Yayoi’s house to hang out. He stumbled upon a simpler paper with weird letters and numbers like the one he had. According to Yayoi, it’s a meeting place for an online game. He signs up for it with his true name and goes to meet one of the seven moons. He was only able to ask yes or no questions and he ended up getting some information from the mysterious woman. He had to stay up late to get what he needed, but instead, he fell asleep through class and went to the nurse’s office to take a nap. During his nap, he relived a dream from the incident and seeing Soubi in it.
Then, he got a message from Soubi and ran out to find him. He tried to calling Soubi, but he wouldn’t pick him and he found him injured on the ground. He met the fighter unit, ‘Zero’ or Youji and Natsuo. The three of them helped him into a taxi to be driven home to his house so he can rest. A knock on the door from a previous group who are also known as ‘Zero,’ except they consist of older women. The younger pair ended up being defeated by the two. When the next day comes, the sacrifice of the Zero pair, named Yamato came to pick up Ritsuka at school. Their conversation was about her past and the relationship she has with her fighter, Kouya. A rematch between the Loveless fighter unit and the new Zero fighter unit commences that night. The result of the fight became an abandoned one and Ritsuka won by default.
Ritsuka decided not to come to school, because he knew he couldn’t sleep during class and decided to find other means of sleeping. The last resort was to sneak into Soubi’s house and sleep on the futon between Youji and Natsuo. After his rest, he played the online game again to get in contact with the seven moons. He learns from them about Seimei’s true self compared to the one, he grew up with. He also learned that Seimei might be alive. Next, he got a call from his mother and had to leave to go home. His mother welcomed him with abuse by hitting him and trying to drown him. After the scolding, Soubi comes with a spare key to the house and tries to convince Ritsuka to leave. He overheard a conversation with his mother and his so called brother. To his surprise, it wasn’t Seimei on the phone. Soubi and Ritsuka goes to the park to fight another unit, ‘Fearless.’ The team told Ritsuka that they had lunch with him and it convinced him more about the truth. When Ritsuka returned home, he saw his mother passed out on the floor with a pack of pills next to her.
He woke up to find himself tied to a chair so he wouldn’t leave the house and Soubi came to his rescue. After Soubi released Ritsuka from his confinement, Ritsuka gave Soubi the key he made and took Soubi’s key and threw it away. He picked up the flowers from Yuiko that his mother threw on the floor and placed in a glass of water. He also found the pills, his mother was taking in the first aid box. However, his mother is even convinced that Seimei is not dead and continues to believe so when Ritsuka doesn’t believe that. Upon playing the game again, Ritsuka meets Ritsu who is also Soubi’s former teacher. He told him to go to Goura. Soubi’s friend, Kio ended up going with them to Goura to see what Soubi was up to. During their pit stop, Ritsuka ordered Soubi not to hide anything from and asked him to take off his clothes so he could see the scars on his back.
When they arrived at the school for fighters and sacrifices, Kio had to be taken away and Soubi and Ritsuka had to be separated. The training for the fighters to find their sacrifices start and Midori leads the way. He explains the chain and how it connects a sacrifice to their fighter. Soon, an intruder approaches Breathless and the Loveless unit. The fighter calls himself Nisei and states that he is Seimei’s fighter. Nisei instantly defeats the Breathless unit and it was Ritsuka and Soubi to get rid of him. They did in the end defeat him. They go to search for Seimei and noticed the words, “Ritsuka, I’m back” written on the wall with Ritsu’s blood. They follow the hall into the library where without an instant, he tackles his elder brother with a hug. After hearing the final truth, Soubi was forced to let Seimei escape and was scolded by Nagisa after wards.
They kept Nisei as a hostage and are using him to exchange for Kio’s life. Kio was guarded by another team, “Bloodless” and the battle ended rather quickly. This wraps up the story so far with Soubi and Ritsuka rescuing Kio.
[Personality]
Ritsuka first comes off as a jerk and cold, because he doesn’t like stupid people who gets themselves into trouble or not realized that they are in trouble. Like someone who can’t stand up for themselves is one of his pet peeves or someone who doesn’t notice it.
Victims. Those who use them are idiots, but those who allow themselves to be used are bigger idiots.
That means, he’s rather straightforward and direct for a 12 year old. He isn’t afraid to say things that’s on his mind and knows what secrets to hide and what to expose. That is to say, if it doesn’t have anything to do with him. He would try to hide this cold side of him so adults don’t worry about him and would act polite and generous to them. There’s a scene when Yuiko points this aspect of him, he ran away from her. This is because he has a sensitive issue to this and it reminds him of his personality problem and his abusive mother.
He isn’t always cold when it comes to his admirable older brother, Seimei. He respects him and loves him dearly. When he met Soubi, Ritsuka thought he was a pervert or someone out to get him but Soubi mentioned that he was Seimei’s friend. This brings out his more cheerful side and his other hobby; taking photos in order to make memories. According to Ritsuka, his fondness of taking pictures is so people don’t forget about him and he expected them to remember him. His fear might be loneliness from the time when his brother had passed away.
Another key part of Ritsuka’s personality is his intelligence. One of his favorite hobbies is to read difficult books like those for adults, but his intelligence can only come so far. He does carry a charismatic side of him that lures people to him. His maturity level is probably higher than anyone his age, since he seems to know a lot of about things. The case might be because he reads plenty of books. That adds to his will of determination. When he wants to know about something, Ritsuka can become persistent and try to ask as many questions as he can. When it comes to his mother, Ritsuka has enough self-perservation to keep himself alive through his mother's abuse and still cares for her after wards. He understands her feelings and her illness from Seimei's death that Ritsuka wouldn't get angry at her like most kids would.
In addition, he understands the meaning of feeling loved and knows what love is, although he is uncomfortable of accepting it from other people like Soubi and Yuiko. When Soubi told him he loved him and kisses him, Ritsuka feels uneasy and infatuated.
Moreover, Ritsuka is a pacifist and this is seen during his battles. He would tell Soubi constantly not to hurt them too much that it can kill them. He is a 12 year old after all and as a 12 year old, he knows from right and wrong already. That is to say, he forgives other people without getting angry and understands them. He believes in choosing his own path instead of having other people deciding for him. He refuses to hurt others on his own physically, because it reminds him of his mother’s abuse. When it comes to verbal abuse, he doesn’t mind it too much. In time, Ritsuka acknowledges being a sacrifice to help find out about his brother. He doesn’t like to order Soubi around even when it is what he really wants and a sacrifice’s job.
Ritsuka has issues with trust when he finds out more about his brother and realized Seimei had lied to him all this time. He thought his brother was someone respectful and yet, Ritsuka doesn’t care what he does as long as he’s alive and well. This also tells him that Soubi had lied to him too, because he refuses to tell him all the secrets his brother told him to keep away from him.
Eventually, he accepts people easily and befriends several people like Yuiko and Yayoi, his classmates. His other friends include Natsuo and Youji as well as his doctor and Soubi. He becomes more cheerful and blissful rather than cold and aloof to others. His bond with other people increases his strength to be more close to them.
Even though with Soubi, Ritsuka is still building his relationship with him ever since they first met. The more Soubi shows him love and kindness, the more Ritsuka wanted to put his arms out and shove him away. This might be an influence from his brother when Seimei said handmade things are bad and dirty. With an admirable figure, Ritsuka doesn’t understand the reason why and it is implied that Seimei was probably the one who loved him the most.
