5. It's disconcerting thinking that she and her husband looked at the investments in the apartments and business and a newer house as fail proof ten years ago and now she's walking away from her salon and her husband is sick. This is probably a reality too many people are facing. It's scary and if the GOP regain power, we will have a fight over Social Security on our hands. My anxiety has been raging for over four years and it didn't calm down even a little after the last election.

Timing is often a disastrous thing, whether it's from being a certain age at a certain time or when it comes to investing. She admitted she had expected to continue running the salon well after retirement age but given that it's become basically her and another employee, she has too much on her plate.

Their new house was bought about 5 years ago but I gather it probably wasn't a financial hit because they swapped a more expensive house for a less expensive one. Plus they could also sell the rental house since it's a sellers market in many places right now and that's unlikely to be true in another 18-24 months.

But yes, without a doubt her retirement years are not likely to be what either of them expected.
