Useful things

1) Wow, Janelle Monae just killed it in the Oscars' opening number. I liked a number of things about the show, such as all the different Elsas singing (though I wished we'd heard more from them), and Maya Rudolph and Kirsten Wiig's little costume design medley. The way that many of the awards were scattered among different movies was also good to ( Read more... )

I've been using Library Extension for a while, and it's great. What I like is an individual can add their library if it's not already on the list, and then it's available for everyone else to use. Library staff doesn't have to do anything special.

I never noticed an issue with reblogging on Tumblr, but I only have the one blog, no sideblogs. All my weird stuff in one convenient location. :)

Interesting how the Thor: Ragnarok scene had a lot of the same visual elements, but very different presentation. Also of note is a poster in the alley that says "Thunder Love", especially now with the next movie being "Love and Thunder".

Perhaps they thought a direct power up from Odin was too easy and went for a more indirect way of Thor having to evolve in a way similar to his father. The parallel of losing an eye (in mythology, for Odin to gain wisdom) was there, but they took different paths. Both serving their people, but with Thor gaining the wisdom that he was not the best to rule.

Very cool to have another recommendation on that! I'm not really looking for books anyway, on Amazon or otherwise, because I've got such a reading list already. (Plus, lots of folks around here recommend books too). But I really liked the idea of it.

I did not notice the poster! What I read about the scene was that this was actually shown to test audiences but they felt too sympathetic about Odin, plus they needed more exposition. So they redid it. I don't know why sympathy for Odin was a bad thing but then I have so many issues with Ragnarok. At least in the second version it foreshadowed the location of New Asgard.

Also, Bruce apparently was the person who originally asked Thor if he was the god of hammers rather than Odin appearing to him. It's surprising, as deleted scenes are revealed, how differently some things have been laid out in movies. I am so glad, for example, that they cut that scene of dying Tony seeing an adult Morgan. It made no sense and would really have taken away from the moment.

The only hinky thing I've noticed with Library Extension is that it doesn't always find copies if there are multiple editions. Especially noticed this with classics and older titles. It's a great concept, and they've added options to search audio and video as well. As a librarian, I like that our patrons can be looking to buy and see what we have listed alongside it. I'm honestly surprised Amazon hasn't tried to block it ( ... )

Yes, I wondered the same thing about Hela when I saw the film. Frankly, very little in Ragnarok made any sense. For example, Thor later says to Brunhilde that he had always admired the Valkyries. And Loki also understood what one was as well. So how did neither of them know the story of how they were wiped out? Isn't the tale of battles all they talk about in Asgard?

I'm fairly surprised that the browser extension can work so widely, but yeah, it doesn't surprise me that it fails to find content given how OPACs can list things.

Janelle Monae was wonderful. The mister actually asked me to rewinder her performance to see it again and he was just walking through the room during the show. The different Elsas were a great idea but wasn't as well executed as I'd hoped. I hope the idea is done again. Renee Zelwegger's speech was terrible in what, until then, was an entertaining show.

Well, fortunately there was only one more award to go at that point, the surprise of which clearly erased her unsurprising win.

I saved my recording of it because I wanted to watch it again too.
