I found the series fascinating and such a change from the zoos of my childhood, there's no more making chimps ride bikes, etc.

And I think you're right about their jobs, they appear to just love working there.

Yes, I don't doubt the workers' devotion to the animals in their care, but it's still a lot of the same when it comes to space and environment (we just watched the blue iguana episode). Granted a lot of people keep (different) iguanas and other animals as pets with even smaller cages and less care but that doesn't make it any better. A ton of animals die each year as part of the pet trade.

There are also a lot of smaller zoos around the country whose condition for animals are not great. In watching an episode of Nature about giraffe conservation I found it eye opening to discover how very important being in the presence of other giraffes is. I remember seeing one in a zoo in not only a small (for its size) pen but it had company only because it had birthed a baby recently.

I think icon making is in steep decline, yes. There's still a few very good icon makers around, but I've noticed the trend these days is mostly just for basic screen caps as icons, especially the icons that you see shared on tumblr. It makes me miss how many fabulous icons were produced on LJ at one time, and how you were always guaranteed a huge selection of new icons to choose after every new episode of your shows *sighs* I suppose it's died down because having multiple icons isn't a thing on tumblr, and that's where fandom is mostly based now

Yes, I agree that the decline of activity in locations like this where icon use is varied and frequent (people used to change banners regularly too) has meant that both icon makers have left and there has been less response for those still getting made.

Screencaps continue to make sense because they're useful for all sorts of creations, such as gifs on Tumblr -- but I see fewer manips as well and you'd think those would still be shareable at a variety of locations. Of course at places like Tumblr, art theft is a big problem so maybe that has had an effect as well.
