Excellent job!!! I love the analysis of Sam's role as female. To me in the early series, he seemed simply an updated version of masculinity, whereas Dean seemed the more female character to me (beneath the butch surface, of course). But over the series, especially in s8/S9, Sam really seems to be fulfilling the female role in the narrative (mostly in ways I dislike, like his incredible lack of agency in S9). The manipulation of gender dynamics within a male relationship is somehting that I like a lot about SPN and something that I think the slashers really respond to.
Hi and thanks! I was a little startled to see a comment here since this post is so old. I just replaced the photo content today because ImageShack had already deleted some of them, and now I'm having to migrate everything to Picassa so I reposted the new links here and at the vid commentary posts.
Yes, I think the lack of insight into Sam's behavior in several seasons probably also adds to that -- I think his thinking has frequently been more opaque than Dean's. To some degree that was done purposefully to create suspense, but I think it's also been the case because it's more often Dean who is conversing and interacting with other characters, so that Sam has fewer opportunities to unburden himself or explain his thinking to the audience. And even this season, we essentially spend a third of it with even Sam unaware of his "own" behavior thanks to a possession he didn't agree to.
