Summary: Elijah Bradley is looking for a hero in Thomas Shepherd.

He didn't know what to make of this visit. Kate said it would be counter-productive to even try what a dozen professional psychologists had failed to achieve, but he wasn't one to back down from a challenge like that. And yes, the challenge was there, same with everything Kate said or did.

He walked down the hall with two of the scientists on the deprogramming team, one of them informing him something of instability and dangerous.... explosions? That definitely made things better.

God, why did he even bother?

At once, Eli found the answer when they led him to the observatory, above the training room, where a single mutant male was blurring here and there, out of the way of the advanced tech shooting something or other beams at him.

He was definitely an efficient weapon. That much was obvious from the amount of damage he'd done on the equipment. Unfortunately, that only made him more volatile, more dangerous and less likely to control.

"Do you think you could call in the expert a little early today?" Eli (Patriot, still, to the scientists) asked.

---

He didn't know what to expect with this 'expert', either. All the intel he'd gotten informed him that the man could keep the speedster under control, but as to what extent, how, and why, Eli had no clue.

"In this room, sir." the guide said mildly, opening the reinforced door and leading him into a white room, one with two chairs. Neither was occupied, but there was already a person sitting in the room.

He was.... floating. Sitting in a meditative position, hovering a few feet off the ground, a raven-haired male in a costume made up of red and black garb reminiscent of Doctor Strange was emitting some sort of energy which was diffusing around him in soft waves.

His face was even more jarring.

It was the face Eli saw in the records of Thomas Shepherd, the Speedster weapon no one could deprogram or control. Identical--twins? The only defining trait between them was their hair. While Thomas' was stark white, his was the opposite. His eyes, as well, were different--brown in contrast to Shepherd's green.

"The Patriot. Or, just Patriot? It's nice to meet you." he said, his feet making contact with the floor and his hand held out. Eli took the hand in a firm shake, his face not letting anything on. "Nice to meet you too......" "See, I knew you wouldn't recognize me." the other smiled. He was good looking, in an odd way, with his European profile and--winged earrings. Familiar, other than with Thomas Shepherd. Dimples dipped in his cheeks and he was more beautiful than handsome, and reminded Eli of....

"Scarlet Wiccan. Or just Wiccan. The Scarlet was added to identify with my mother." he said. "The Scarlet Witch." Eli realized.

"That's right." Wiccan said. "And Thomas Shepherd..." "Yes, he's.... my brother." Wiccan frowned. "My twin brother. He isn't... well. What exactly did you want with him?"

"I found out about the illegal programming, the weapons they were forming from mutants. I heard about the most difficult cases, and Thomas Shepherd's name came up." Eli answered.

"Well, you're a little late to the party. Ah, but who am I to talk; I only found out I had a brother a few years ago." Wiccan said seriously. "I've been trying to help him. This would have been better done with a telepath, but Xavier's doesn't have that many to spare that often so I compromise with calming techniques I learned from Brother Voodoo. Eh, Doctor Voodoo. Whatever he goes by now."

"How effective are these techniques?" Eli asked. "Well, he doesn't want to kill me." Wiccan said, after some thought.

"Lovely."

"Well, it's better than before. You would never believe the things they did to him. Since he was a kid, throughout his teenhood---- let's just say we can thank higher powers he didn't turn out worse."

"Well, we'll see if I'll praise or lament the good Lord today." Eli said, sighing. Wiccan nodded. "Send him in." he said to the camera perched on the corner of the white room.

He was bound by special cuffs and collared with an inhibitor, his head low and his stance tense.

"Hey, Tommy." Wiccan said, his tone cheerful. "What the hell is he doing here?" was all the Speedster responded, his eyes fixed on Eli in a glare. "You know who he is." Wiccan said. "Yeah, but what is he doing here? I thought you said I wouldn't have to play big guns for any fucking government anymore." Thomas hissed.

"He's not asking you to be a weapon." Wiccan assured, looking to Eli as if he wasn't certain himself. "I'm asking you to be a hero." Eli said.

The Speedster finally looked up at him, and any lesser man might have shuddered. The amount of weariness, of long-standing pain in those eyes were more than Eli had seen in even the most experienced of soldiers. "You're kidding, right?" Thomas said scathingly. "I'm not." Eli said, not breaking his gaze.

"I'm here for a friend. For the formation of a team. Your name came up when we reviewed our candidates." he continued. "I'm not going to be used again." Thomas said angrily.

"I'm not forcing you. I'm asking you what you want." Eli said solidly. "I came here for a hero. I don't go for anything less. I don't care what you were, what you think you are, or what they think of you. I'll come out and say I don't care what they did to you; no matter how terrible it was, or maybe because it was as horrible as they said, you haven't broken. You have a greater capacity to be a hero than most of the capes already out there. That's why I came here. I'm not looking to save you; you don't need it."

Thomas had stared at him the whole time, Eli's words seeming to sink in. Wiccan looked between them with an unreadable expression. "What do you have to say?" Eli asked after a while.

---

Nate was reviewing the information his armor had recorded when Eli entered the meeting room.

"So how was the recruitment?" Nate asked in that irritatingly cheerful way.

Eli frowned heavily. "You gave me the difficult recruitments on purpose, didn't you?"

"I wouldn't say that." Nate said, but his smile gave him away. "All right, fine. But I knew you could do it. After all, no one's as stubborn as you. I thought butting heads with this Speedster would give you a good challenge."

"It was a challenge all right." Eli sighed. "So?" "So what?" "Did he accept?"

"Nate..." Eli shook his head, and smiled. "You have yourself a speedster."
