Ygritte had sneaked in so quietly that even Shadow hadn't heard her. Susan sat bolt upright, ready to yell until she realised it was Ygritte. "What are you doing here?" she asked, rubbing her eyes.

"'tis time t'give you the gift I promised," said Ygritte softly, skinny limbs well-hidden by the old cloak. "D'you dare? T'follow me into the woods? I promise no harm."

"Not many others could drag me out of bed in the middle of the night," replied Susan with a yawn. Sleepy as she was, she was curious as to what Ygritte was about, and it got her moving. She pulled back her hair from her face and took her cloak from the peg where it had hung since the winter snow. She told Shadow to stay in the hut with Lucy; the wolf went to sleep at the doorway of Lucy's room, and Susan followed Ygritte out of the hut.

"Where did you say we were going?" she asked when they were outside. "The woods?"

"Aye," said Ygritte, leading her along in a direction assuredly enough for there to be some real path, though none was visible. She had a clearing in mind, one she often camped in when she was out hunting late. "A beautiful night, isn't it?"
