Chapter 6: Complications

The blood that’s running through her veins
With every beat there’s no escape...
“Do you have any feelings towards me aside from lust?”

“You really want me to answer that?”

---

“Hi Shane!” Katy greeted as she ran to me. I was waiting for her and Kristopher from the yard across their school. My Sire, Adam wanted to keep watch on them. There have been rumors spreading around the neighboring towns. Rumors of people missing, then turning up a few days later -dead drained of blood.

“Hello Katy.” I said to the little girl. I looked around for Kris and spotted him a few feet away from us, walking to our direction. He smiled when he saw me. I could understand how Adam is captivated.

“Hi Shane!” Kristopher greeted too when he reached us. “Where’s Adam and Tommy?” He asks as he looked around hoping to see them.

“Ah, I am afraid to tell you that I am the only one to walk you two home today. Adam and Thomas had gone today for some kind of personal matter.” I told both of them. Upon hearing the news Kristopher’s smile dimmed a bit. In just a couple of weeks the kid had been quite fond of my Sire.

“Oh, okay. But can we go to the park today before you take us home? Just for a bit?” Kristopher inquired.

“Can we Shane?” Katerine added.

“I guess we can if only for no more than an hour.” I said as they took my hand and all but drag me to said playing ground.

-

“How did today go?” Adam asked me as soon as I appeared in his quarters.

“Nothing unusual. I took Katerine and Kristopher to the playground before taking them home.”

“That’s good.”

It was my turn to ask. “Did you find anything?”

He nodded. “I’m afraid the threats are real. Some of our kind have been lingering in the neighboring towns and are attacking humans. Tommy’s leaning towards rouges though. From what he and Isaac have seen from some of the victims’ bodies and autopsies the kills were messy and hurried.”

I let the information sink in before responding. “While I was in Europe, some attacks had happened for a few months. The victims will be snatched, gone for days and like the same that is happening now -will turn up dead and drain. The kills have also been a mess. When I stayed with Simon’s coven there I found out that the some of the vampires who were caught doing it belonged to covens.”

“Are you suggesting that-“

“I am saying that we should be open to all angles Adam. Less the town is in threat we cannot do anything about it. If it were true and these vampires do or did belong to a coven only the leaders of their coven can punish them.”

He sighed when he realized it was true. “I’m afraid you’re right.”

“There is one more thing you have to know about what happened in Europe, Sire.”

“What is it?”

“The vampires, some if not most of them -belonged to Raymond.”

His demeanor changed at the mention of the name. His blue eyes glowed and looked more gray than blue. His grip on the table tighten; making the wood splinter in his hand. His fangs appeared followed by a growl. His true form showed.

“What?”

“We do not know for sure if what is happening here is the same as what happened in Europe. But we still have to keep are guards up until this dies down.”

“AND YOU’RE JUST TELLING ME THIS NOW?” He shouted in that voice that is laced with anger and anguish, feelings that are older than me.

“I’m sorry Sire. I did not want to tell you until it was necessary.” I told him in a calm voice. I suspected his reaction upon hearing the name, making me ready for the anger. “I do not want to worry you with things that do not involve bot of you together.”

He knew what I said was the truth. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he opened them again his eyes were back to blue and his fangs had retracted. He let go of his hold on his study table and sat back on the chair behind it. “I know. I’m sorry for shouting at you.”

“You are forgiven, though its unnecessary.”

For a minute I watch my Sire’s eyes. A couple of emotions went through them as we talk; curiosity, anger, pain, apprehension and lastly the feeling of lost. Our bond made me feel the last one like a gut punch. He trained his eyes back one me. “So, what do you suggest we do?”

“I say we live like none of this is happening. It will be our problem if it ever comes in this town Sire. I want you to enjoy your time with Kristopher. We all do. You’ve waited for this for a long time.”

“Guess there’s nothing more we can do. I hate it when you guys are right.”

---

“You are done playing?” I asked the boy when he was near me. I was sitting on a bench under a tree on the park they were playing.

“I’m tired. I’ll play again later.” He got up on the bench and sat down beside me.

For a few minutes he was silent beside me, though I could sense that he cannot sit still for some reason. “Shane?”

“Yes Kristopher?”

“Why do you talk different? Like in those old movies mama likes to watch on TV. Sometimes you also sound like the bible.”

“The bible?” I asked with an arched eyebrow.

“Yeah, not like the bible exactly you know? Like you just sound like it with how you talk.” He tries to explain, even though I know he was finding it hard to explain in a way that he would not confuse me.

I tried a different approach. “Are you saying I talk like a bible young man?” It made him giggle which made me smile in return.

“No! That’s not it. Um…” He said and made a thinking expression. “You talk like in that movie! I remember it now. Like in “Romeo and Juliet! That’s it.” He grinned, happy that he finally found an example. It was close enough.

“Does it bother you if I talk like that?” I asked him.

“No.” He smiled for me to know that it is true. “I don’t mind. Like Katy said you’re nice, and I think its cool you talk like that. I’ve never heard other people talk like you.”

“Thomas used to talk like me you know.”

Brown eyes widen with wonder. “Really? Wow.”

I nodded. “Being to places and staying there sometimes can affect a person’s personality. Thomas and Adam lived in different other places for years, that is why they are able to talk casually now.”

“But I thought you live with them?”

“I do. But there are times that I would travel alone.”

“That’s cool. I want to be a taxi driver when I grow up so I can drive to other places!” He told me with glee. I find it kind of pleasant that he is already comfortable with me. The kid is really exceptional.

“That sounds like a brilliant plan.” I laughed. I did not bother telling him the truth yet. In time he will realize it. “Do you want to go back to playing with Katy again?”

“I think we should go home now.”

“Alright, I think so too. We should get Katy.”

Kris was sitting on his bed, hiding under the covers. He held a flashlight in one hand while he uses the other to turn the pages from his story book. Mama already checked on him to make sure he’s already tucked in bed. But tomorrow's Saturday, so no school -he can stay up for a lil bit more.

Today was an awesome day in his book. They draw in class and sang his favorite songs. He even got a high score in his test today. Shane even went to them to the park and bought them ice cream after. He missed Adam though. But Shane said he was away for some ‘personal matter’ or whatever that means for grown-ups. He just has to wait until Adam gets back to show him the drawing Kris made of him.

Being hidden under the covers mean he wouldn’t be able to see anything from the outside, which explains why his body jumped a foot in the air when he heard a knock from his window. He hastily crawled out from under the makeshift cave to look at his window. What he saw made this day more awesome, it’s Adam!

Kris quickly ran towards the window to open it. Adam slipped in without any noise. Kris was already hugging him as soon as his feet landed on the floor. “Adam!”

Adam gently pried Kris’ arms from his waist to crouch down and pick him up. “Hello little one. Did you have a great day in school today? I’m sorry I couldn’t fetch you today.” Adam says as he walks to Kris bed to lay them down. Kris didn’t let him go until Adam was leaning on the headboard.

“It’s okay. Shane told me you were away. And school was awesome! We sang songs and dance. Mama made me PB&J for lunch! It’s my favorite. Ever! And then we draw a lot today in class. Oh!” He jumped from the bed towards his table. He took his bag and rummaged through it. When he found what he was looking for he put his bag back and quickly climbed towards the bed and Adam’s side. “Here, I draw this today in class.”

Adam opened the folded piece of paper. Kris looked at him expectantly as he surveyed the drawing. It was a drawing of him when they first met that night at the woods. It was drawn just like what you’d expect from any five-year old. But to Adam it’s a great drawing.

“Thank you Kris, I love it.” He smiled and gave Kris a kiss on top of his head.

It made the kid beam and hug Adam again. “Really? You can keep it if you want. I’ll draw Tommy and Shane next time and you can give it to them.”

“I’m sure they’ll love it too.”

Kris has to remember to draw Tommy and Shane tomorrow for class. Though he thinks Katy had already drawn Shane, he’ll have to ask just to be sure.

“Why aren’t you asleep yet?” Adam asked him. Kris couldn’t help but make a ‘oh-oh, busted!’ face.

“It’s Friday! I can stay up late. Just don’t tell mama.”

“I won’t. It’ll be our secret.” Adam put his pointing finger on his lips and made a shushing noise. Kris did the same. “But you must sleep early so you’ll grow into a fine boy, you know.”

“I’m not sleepy yet.” Kris protested. Adam’s his friend so he’s supposed to agree that Kris can stay up late on Fridays.

“Why don’t I just tell you a story to help you fall asleep instead?” he ask Kris.

“Okay.” He agreed. He likes Adam’s voice. Kris bets he tells awesome stories too.

“Alright, lie down now so I can start the story.”

But instead of lying down on the bed Kris climbed on Adam, his small body lying on top of Adam’s much bigger one. For a moment Adam was silent. “Adam?” Kris looks up to meet his eyes. “Can you tell the story now?”

For a few more seconds Adam just stared at him. Kris for a moment, thought he did the wrong thing but then Adam smiled down at him. “Okay, let’s start.”

“Once upon a time, in a place very far from here lived a boy called Mitchel. He had reddish hair and blue eyes. He came from a wealthy family.” Adam started, his voice softer than when he’s talking. The melody of his voice once again wrapped around Kris and calmed him down. His eyes slowly closing the more of Adam’s voice reach his ears.

“One day he met another boy. The boy was shorter than Mitchel with brown hair and the most amazing brown eyes he’s ever seen. . .”

The following words became lost as for the second time since they met, Kris fell asleep to Adam’s voice.
