and when we come we always come too late [for forvanityfair]

It was going to happen this time and Justin would see to it personally. The Vanity Fair interview was starting to reach myth like status in the fact that there was much talk, but little actual evidence that it would be taking place at all. This time he had taken his own initiative, calling Christine personally and later reserving a table where he ( Read more... )

Justin would be reassured if he could see inside Christine's head. She is not leaving the table without her interview. Every detail about her appearance is carefully orchestrated to make an impression. When conducting an interview she thought about all the angles including, but not limited to, what she wore. Getting people to talk openly wasn't always easy and the last thing she wanted was to wear something that sent off unconscious visual cues that said "stop".

Her dress is Hermes in a flattering and soothing ocean blue color. Never red. Not for an interview. Her pocketbook has her cassette recorder but when the time comes she'll leave it off to the side of the table so as not to have it be intrusive.

She doesn't keep him waiting. After all, he's doing her the favor. The restaurant is chic and Christine is escorted to his table. "Justin, hello."

"Christine!" The name tumbles out of his lips with more exuberance than he intends, but Hammer doesn't bother correcting himself. He scurries over to her side of the table to pull out the chair for her and carefully slide it forward for her to sit.

He then returns to his own seat, pretending to look at a wine list he has already memorized. "It's really great to see you. Would you like to start with a drink? An appetizer? A softball of a question to warm up my brain?"

Christine finds his exuberance charming. A lot of the people she interviews tend to be tragically cool and unflappable. All suffering from the same Xanax/Botox induced ennui where nothing short of a unicorn that crapped gold dubloons and rainbows would get so much as a smile.

She doesn't lose a step. "A glass of wine would be great." She'll make it last through the evening though. Christine tries not to drink and interview. Hmm...a softball question..." She taps a finger against her lips in deep thought. "Tell me something surprising about yourself."

He waves for the waiter and orders a bottle of 1976 Chateau d'Yquem. Christine may not have more than one glass, but he would, and the luxury of refilling a glass yourself was always more gratifying than waiting for someone to do it for you.

"Should I wait for you to start recording?" he asks playfully and gives her a few moments before answering. "I think I might be getting some form of pet envy. I never really thought about it before, thought I'd be too busy for one. Then I see all these stars, most are female I admit, carrying small dogs and now pigs with them. Maybe the next new invention will be a pet carrying briefcase. Who knows? But I like the idea of having someone around."
