[Light studies the feed closely, carefully - there's something uncannily familiar about the child's appearance, and the name he identifies himself as, Ryuzaki - well, it's not a name Light's easily forgotten in the last five years.

But it has to be a coincidence. L is long dead and buried and rotting; Light is certain of this, as certain as any number of unshakable truths he's ever known, as certain as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and certain as the color of the sky and the written strokes of his own name. L is dead, Light saw to it himself. He was there when the detective breathed his last, felt the life slip out of his thin body. L is dead and this child, whoever he is, it has to be a coincidence. Or maybe a trick of the fae.

There's only way to find out for certain. Light readies his standard welcoming text and presses the button to send it.]

Please forgive the form letter.

Welcome to Demeleier. My name is Ryuga Asahi and I am a member of Demeleier's welcoming committee.

The purpose of this message ( ... )

[Light doesn't believe for even half a second that L feels anything approaching gratitude - no more than he believed L thought of him as a friend. That's fine, L. Insult me all you like. You'll pay for it double, each rotten word. Just you wait.]

Determination is but one factor in the investigation, Ryuzaki. We lost a lot of valuable resources with your deleted files, and ... as I said, it hasn't been the same without you. Your leadership is something that could never be replaced completely. Kira has proved extremely elusive, even despite our best efforts.

[These are all the normal things Light Yagami, model citizen would say; the words flow quite naturally off his tongue.]

The test ... [the test for the veracity of the 13-day rule, of course ... ] It was never completed. It was a team decision. The notebook remained locked away in a safe for most of the time afterward.

You flatter me so, Light.

[And L hates flattery.]

You decided against the test? Well that's why you wasted five years of your life, then. Of course, if you were Kira, that would work to your advantage, wouldn't it?

It was a group decision, Ryuzaki. Everyone had an equal say in it, and everyone agreed not to go through with the test.

[Of course he would leap right into accusing Light of being Kira. Light finds himself feeling as if the previous five years never even happened - he's a boy of 18 again, under the scrutiny of the world's most famous detective.]

After losing so much, it seemed the obvious choice was to err on the side of caution. I wasn't the only one who disagreed with your high-risk methods, if you'll recall.

I'm not surprised that they chose to go against it. Their logic was that the Shinigami killed me for my decision to test the notebook, right?

But you're smarter than they are. You know it, too, so don't pretend that you're indignant and offended on behalf of your father. You would have looked ahead, and seen that the results of the test would have either definitively proven your innocence or guilt, along with that of Misa Amane.

What did the Shinigami have to say about the whole thing, by the way? Did you confront her, or was everyone afraid to?

[And Light goes quiet for a longer moment than is technically necessary. When he replies, his tone is audibly stiff.]

Ryuzaki ... my father gave his life in the pursuit of Kira. Please don't accuse me of cheap falsities on his behalf. You have no idea what we've all gone through in the past five years.

[The sudden somberness isn't entirely an act on Light's part - he wasn't entirely pleased with how the move on Mello's hideout played out, especially the part of his father's death. Mello was L's prodigy; as far as Light was concerned, both Mello and L were responsible for Soichiro's untimely demise.]

I respect your emotions, of course. It's very human and natural of you to express them so accordingly.

It's also pretty convenient, but perhaps it's disrespectful to point this out. Especially since your father is dead... that's unfortunate.

[And Light's positively seething at this point in the conversation, every fiber of his being screaming to do serious violence to L. He's lucky we're not talking in person right now. It takes all of his resolve not to let this seep over into his voice.]

Ryuzaki, regardless of what your personal thoughts and feelings are for me, the truth of the matter is that our circumstances have drastically changed, for the time being. I hope you can agree we're both adult enough and rational enough to set aside our past differences and work together toward a new common goal - survival.

You're suggesting that we set aside our differences and join hands (metaphorically, of course, I don't like palm-on-palm contact) to combat the dangers of Demeleier together?

I'm suggesting that in this current situation we've both found ourselves in, working together with the community as a whole to ensure mutual survival and harmony should take precedence over an old investigation that has no real relevance to the situation at hand. I'm sure you'll probably say that that's exactly what Kira would say, to derail and divert attention from the investigation, but I don't see how that argument has any real bearing on the fact that we're both now in a primitive locale with limited resources and very real, immediate dangers. Pragmatically speaking, until such time as we're returned to Tokyo, bickering about theoretical questions related to the Kira investigation is a waste of time and resources. I'm certain even you cannot deny this as an unfortunate fact, Ryuzaki.

It is exactly what Kira would say. That's why you got my attention in the first place and why you've managed to hold it for as long as you have, Light. It's why I can't simply forget the investigation, even after many months away from home. Even knowing that it kills me, one of my vices is my intense obsessive streak. I'm aware of this, but my awareness does not aid me in overcoming it.

[Idiot.]

I'm not saying forget it, Ryuzaki. I'm saying there are other things that take priority now. I understand it's an important case - I haven't forgotten that, either - but there's simply nothing to be done about it at the moment, outside of wild, futile speculation.

But surely, Light, you could humor an old friend. You have five years of knowledge that I only can speculate about, but if you'd give me several hours of your time, I'm sure that we could reach some sort of conclusion following a thorough explanation to bring me up to speed.

I would dearly like closure, and you would, as well, I'm sure...

Of course, Ryuzaki. [In truth, Light wanted nothing more than to rid himself of the other detective once and for all. Again.] I'll be happy to speak with you on the subject, but I'm afraid I do have other responsibilities here, now, so it may have to wait. I hope you'll understand.

Other responsibilities?" You could just say that you're trying to shake me off. I won't be offended. If I were Kira, I'd want that too, no doubt.
