God, I love this. I adore Elena's selfishness - she knows she isn't in this like he is, but she needs him, she needs this unconditional relentless love he gives her, and she can't bring herself to 'do the right thing' and let him go. I love all the subtle self-loathing you've put into this fic, that knowledge that she's not as good of a person as everyone thinks she is. But how she'll reap the benefits of that belief anyway, because she needs to be loved, even if she doesn't love herself (especially because she doesn't love herself).

I adore Elena's selfishness - she knows she isn't in this like he is, but she needs him, she needs this unconditional relentless love he gives her, and she can't bring herself to 'do the right thing' and let him go.
I definitely think that this is something that needs to be explored more in canon; Elena's selfishness re: Damon. Earlier it was all very straightforward and she very clearly rejected him and left no room for interpretation (and Damon took it as a 'yes' anyway, lol, that boy). But now, it's a whole lot more hazy because she's silent mostly and "where were you, Damon" and all the looks and dependency and stuff. She's not giving him room for more, but she's definitely not letting him go. I think that's fascinated and I need more of this!

It's not only the question of power over Damon, I think. If someone in control loses control because of you, it means they really want you. That you really count, you really get under their skin. People keep abandoning Elena, so if Damon really wants her SO MUCH, maybe he'll never abandon her?

Oh, definitely so! But I also like to think that she enjoys it; it's like Caroline hates Klaus, but you can tell that she's flattered by all the attention, which I think is extremely realistic. Similarly, I like to think that it's not only about the loss for Elena, but also about power, when she feels so powerless usually. It makes it more teenage and realistic for me somehow!

Oh, an ego boost factor is definitely there. Damon can pretty much have anyone he wants, and yet he's begging for Elena's attention, let alone other things. On a very shallow level, it must feel AMAZING ;).
What's more, Damon understands power play. He's not some naive boy who worships her not understanding the consequences. Damon knows how this kind of power affects Elena. He gives her the power because he knows she will relish in it, and he finds it hot. BECAUSE IT FUCKING IS HOT.

And I completely agree; Damon definitely knows how this dynamic works, and he sometimes makes it overt, when Elena had been unconscious of its functioning, like that time when he went "Stop doing that" "stop doing what?" "Expecting me to do things because it's you who's asking". (...or something). THESE TWO COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER ALSO, because Elena likes to stay in denial and Damon is self-aware beyond all reason!!
