So what about the people who get married, get divorced, and then just screw around uninhibitedly? If we're bashing the literal interpretation, that is apparently not verboten. =P

I would disagree. Indiscriminate screwing was already frowned upon. Jesus almost certainly was saying even if one remarries one is committing adultery. This assumes that everyone in the crowd was already on board with not screwing around pre, post and during marriage.
