[for Eden]

Nothing should surprise him anymore, not about this place, but every time something does happen, Babe still gets wide-eyed like he ain't never seen anything like it, 'cause he hasn't. Nelson's been in a bow before, but that one had been next to him in the box he'd come in, torn to Christmasy scraps by the time the cat's claws had been done with it ( Read more... )

"It's no good shushing him after he's already bloody woken me up, you know," says Eden, her voice muffled by her face buried in the crook of her arm. She sniffs and rolls back against Babe, but doesn't lift her head.

"What's the matter with him? Does he want to go out? Please tell me he hasn't woken the bloody pig up."

When the hell did Babe get these pets anyway? He's not a pet person. Maybe a dog, but dogs are meant to go outside and beg off of the good people of South Philly who might have a scrap of sandwich. Yeah, the pets he's got now probably have to go out, but he doesn't answer that 'cause he's still looking at the god damn paper hearts on the wall.

Nelson lets out a frustrated sound, and Babe finally comes to the animal's aid, slipping the bow off his neck. He puts it about half a foot from Eden's eyes, "I think he was tryin' to get rid of this." Happy Valentine's Day, baby. How 'bout some cheesy decorations and a kiss? I ain't got roses.

Eden opens her eyes and stares at the ribbon for a minute and then picks it up, turning it between her fingers.

"What's that in aid of?"

She's joking. She's gotta be. Women remember these things like they remember birthdays and shit like that. It's important to them, even if Babe sees it as a day to just give chocolates and flowers and possibly get something in return if he plays his cards right.

He considers for a moment saying it's nothing, but she's bound to see everything around them sooner or later. "Valentine's Day," he answers, surprisingly not with the grumble he wants to. The island celebrates holidays, go figure.
