one of the things i can't do is understand the rationale behind spring cleaning before Chinese New Year. that is something i. cannot. understand. period

well, it's the biggest motivation for mothers to clean the house, otherwise it will just be dirty all year and dirtier the next without spring cleaning... until you get really irked by the mess.
