You're right, things did develop quite a bit character-wise - I particularly liked the back-stories on the various members that came out (though I wish they hadn't felt the need to keep repeating scenes quite so much - yes, we do actually remember what happened two eps ago, thanks!) and the two-parter holiday one at the pension. I could still live without time-wasters like Haruhi in Wonderland, though ( ... )

FB was very cool, and I enjoyed it a lot as an anime. I'm not sure whether I prefer it to Ouran or not. I think they're about equal, though I prefer Ouran's animation style. I love the prettyness of it. Which is very shallow but, alas, true.
BTW, sent those Icons off to you. I hope you get them.
