It’s three AM, and Roy’s patrolling when he sees someone who really doesn’t belong a block away from Seattle’s red-light district.
She’s tiny - not even Robin-tiny - nine year-old tiny. And she’s barefoot.
The only thing that stops Roy from swooping in and dropping her off at the closest police station is the way she’s walking. She certainly doesn’t move like a lost little kid. Roy follows her from the rooftop and waits because you can never be too careful.
The tiny girl pauses in the middle of the side walk and cocks her head. Then she crosses the street, forcing Roy to go around the block so that he can get to the roof tops on the other side covertly. When he gets there she’s already approached a few street gamblers running a shell game.
“Hey,” the girl sounds shy and maybe a little scared, “Could I play?”
The men laugh. One of them tells her to run home to her mother. The man running the shell game is thin and his voice is nasal and grating.
“Little girl, I’ll let you play - if you have the cash.” “Oh, I didn’t

“Are you sure you haven’t been blessed by Tui? Or La? Or both?”
Katara is a waterbender. She loves the ocean. Until about a year ago, she’d never been more than a few miles from the ocean her entire life. Her tribe are people of the ocean - of waves and tides and ships and storms.
Compared to this boy, though, Katara feels decidedly outmatched in that regard.
Okay, so Aang thought they should try to rescue Zuko from wherever he and Azula had gotten sucked into - great. The Fire Nation needs a ruler, and Iroh was kind of ticked about leaving the Jasmine Dragon. Somehow, Katara had thought that meant an epic journey to the Spirit World.
This - this is not the Spirit World, and if it is, Katara is going to have a talk with Gran-gran about updating her stories.
Well, originally she thought it might have been the Spirit World. The Spirit World probably has oceans, and Katara had landed in the middle of an ocean - at night - alone. It wasn’t the best way to start the journey. Not to mention who knows where Aang landed? And Sokka

She’s aware that she’s staring with her mouth open like a fish, and that he’s saying something, but his voice is so rich . . .
Tui and La, it’s like Jet, but one thousand times better - no, worse, way worse.
Still, Katara’s pretty grateful that she and Aang had decided that a break in their relationship might be best, at least during peace talks. No one wants people to suspect that the Avatar-mediated reparation committees are biased in the South Pole’s favor.
But thinking about Aang’s not a bad plan. She tries to block out the blinding sexiness in front of her with thoughts of panda-lilies and flying and saving-the-world-from-century-long-war.
Okay, she’s good.
“Miss?” he asks, staring into her eyes.
“Are-you-La?” Okay - not good.
“Um, my name is Kaldur’ahm. May I ask your name?”
“Katara.”
“Nice to meet you, Katara. May I also ask why and how you were riding a fifteen foot tsunami towards San Diego?” “Oh, I’m a waterbender. I guess I might have been overdoing it, but it’s a full moon and I’ve gotten separated from

Artemis is on patrol in Star City when she sees some guy dressed entirely in blue trying to break into a car with an unidentifiable tool. Getting the drop on him is too easy, but he hears the creak of her bow as she draws it - gotta get that piece oiled , and spins to face her, tool in hand.
“Freeze! Wait, are you seriously threatening me with a boomerang?”
The guy has a strange combination of a pony-tail and a mohawk and eyes that rival Superboy’s. He’d be good looking, if the expression on his face wasn’t really goofy.
“Hey, boomerangs are serious business.”
“Yeah, sell it to Kid Flash, ‘cause we’re not buying that here.”
Even with his hand half-drawn back, she’s got an easy three second advantage with her bow drawn. He clearly realizes this, drops the boomerang, and puts his hands up.
“Um, can I ask? What’s up with your hair?”
Artemis flicks her pony tail over her shoulder so that she can look at it out of her peripheral vision. It looks fine.

AN: This is a section completely without yj characters. Understanding that most people are here for the yj characters, this part is not necessary to the story as a whole. I just wanted to check in on our badass normals on the other side of the multi-verse. ---------------------------
The nice thing about Zuko is that he has the worst luck of any person in the world.
It makes being his girlfriend anything but boring, and today is no exception.
The quivering spirit shrieks when pinned to the wall. Within seconds, though, it disintegrates around the last of her salt-water soaked senbon.
One down, only hundreds more where that came from.
Mai is grateful that Avatar was willing to risk drastic measures to get Zuko back, but the next time he tears a hole between the human and spirit world, Mai’s going to ask him to not do it in the middle of the Palace.
The good news is that General Iroh is expected to arrive in the Capital at dawn with some of his tea friends. Until then . . . Mai loads and shoots her new favorite crossbow until

She scurries off after a bow and a “Yes, Lady Mai.”
Mai recovers the projectiles she can still use from this corridor and hurries to the next. One of Ty Lee’s friends is already there - the very pretty young man in green with the regrettable mustache. There’s a hole in the floor the size of a tank and she can hear the sounds of battle from far below. The boy’s beating back akamataa with earth he’s pulled up from the tunnels.
“The Dai Li told me to tell you that the mujina spirits have breached the underground catacombs and the bunker, but that they’re holding them there.”
Mai falls into step with him, firing off projectile after projectile at the snake spirits, “Have the spirit-badgers reached the - “
“Secret river?” and a Fire Nation citizen would never have cut her off, “No. But they’re close, and the Dai Li won’t be able to keep them contained if they reach it.”
“Divert the magma from the bunker to all tunnels with access to the river and block it off.” The earthbender looks at her like she’s crazy, “It’s against the
