Robin, gen anonymous November 7 2011, 14:01:20 UTC
Inspired by an episode of Justice League, where the villain traps most members of the League in their own nightmares, except Batman because he forces himself to stay awake (loosely inspired).

Same thing happens, where everyone in the Justice League and Young Justice team is trapped in an inescapable nightmare, including Batman. Robin is the only one who manages to stay awake, and continues to fight his exhaustion while going into his friends' nightmares and pulling them out of it. Lastly, he goes into Batman's head, where eight-year-old Bruce Wayne is watching his parents' murder over and over again. He manages to coax Bats out of his nightmare, and it's only after the bad guy is defeated that he finally allows himself to fall asleep. Batman carries him home.

Gen focus please, but I wouldn't say no to some Robin/Kid Flash.

None of them even see it coming. There seemed to be a shock that went through the air and M’gann and Martian Manhunter stiffen immediately, but they have no time to react. Wally and his uncle fall asleep almost instantly, falling to the floor in a dramatic fashion that only they could pull off with some form of dignity. Captain Marvel manages to fall on top of Wally, making him groan slightly. Artemis, Superboy and Black Canary all go next, slumping down against the table, or in Superboy’s case, sliding down against the wall he had been leaning against.

By then, everyone else in the room is struggling to keep their eyes open. M’gann and her uncle are almost out of their seats before falling back down, their eyes falling shut.

Kaldur has an order halfway out of his mouth. “Nobody-” But he falls against the floor next to the Flash before he has a chance to finish his sentence.

Robin is halfway slumped against the wall, desperately doing his best to keep his eyes open. Stay awake. Have to stay awake. The sudden wave of exhaustion ( ... )

It’s an abandoned warehouse. Of course it’s an abandoned warehouse.

There are cobwebs stretching over several corners and dust covers stacks of boxes behind him. In front of him, everything is alight with fire.

Robin hesitates for a moment before he does anything else. He’s used to weird situations, but how on earth did he end up in a warehouse (a warehouse on fire, at that) after he touched M’gann?

A scream cuts through the smoke and it doesn’t matter anymore because that's M’gann and M’gann is afraid of fireHe starts running ( ... )

And suddenly it clicks. The fire, then this, the simulation where everyone died. They’re things M’gann is afraid of, more than anything. Back in the cave, everyone was asleep and Robin had to fight to stop from letting the exhaustion take him too. M’gann was asleep, and when he touched her, he started seeing things she was afraid of.

She’s having a nightmare, Robin realizes. And I’m in the middle of it.

“M’gann!” he shouts. She looks up at him immediately, the tear streaks shining on her face. He runs over to her and she stares at him, her mouth dropping open a little.

“What are you d-”

“This isn’t real,” Robin says as quickly as he can. “None of it is real. It’s just a-”

“Simulation,” M’gann finishes, still looking shocked to find him standing in front of her. “I know, and I could’ve made it real when Artemis died. We almost didn’t wake up because of me. And this,” M’gann stops and looks out at the burning mothership. “This, all of this. Artemis and Kaldur and Conner ( ... )

M’gann is opening her eyes in front of him. They’re back in the cave and the extremely whelming exhaustion that had left him while he was in M’gann’s nightmare returns in full force. His eyes fall shut for a moment.

The Joker’s knife is up against his throat and Robin stops struggling. “What’s wrong, birdie?” The Joker laughs and Robin feels the knife dig a little deeper-

M’gann catches him before he falls against the floor.

“Are you alright?” she asks, concerned, as he straightens.

“Yeah,” he mumbles before yawning. “Yeah, just a little tired.”

“I felt that way too,” M’gann nods. “And the next thing I knew everything was on fire and-”

“You were having a nightmare. The fire in the warehouse wasn’t real. You relived the simulation too, but it was only a nightmare.”

M’gann turns her head, confused for a moment but then her eyes widen. “Hello, Megan!” And Robin smiles because it’s been a long, depressing week since he’s heard her say that. “You used my powers to come into my dream ( ... )

OMG YAY!!! Thank you so much for filling my prompt, it's great so far. I really loved the Robin and M'gann interaction (there's not nearly enough of it) and how worried he was about her fear of fire. I can't wait to see what you do with the others, especially Batman.

Also, I love gen, so that makes me very happy :D

I adored the Robin and M'gann interaction too. Robin's relationship with all his teammates - except Wally (we know they're best friends, but until the last episode, they didn't do much interacting) - are very underdeveloped, so it's always nice to see a story centered around his relationship with each individual friend. The characterization is very nice - I loved the little flash of the Joker in Robin's mind. The whole nightmare-just-at-his-heels thing Robin is experiencing is excellently portrayed.

I think gen is the best approach to take here anyway. Spitfire rarely works out in Robin-centric stories, and this plotline is just not right for a Robin-pairing. Superboy/M'gann might be the only thing you could work in, if you wanted, but I was hoping it would be gen anyway, so yay!

Can't wait for more!

Love the take on Failsafe. Robin is just as suicidal as Aqualad - he's just more productive about it. I enjoyed the tense interaction between M'gann and Robin. Everything can't be fine and dandy between them after he sent her boyfriend to his death, and now he's calling a possibly-suicidal plan again.

Great story, anon. I'm waiting for more.

Ach, I just stumbled upon this in flat view and it's totally gorgeous. Super trippy too because I totally roleplayed a very similar setup last week, with Robin and M'gann visiting everyone's minds to rescue them from their own subconscious...but I'm totally fascinated by your take, and your writing is effortless. Can't wait for more! :)

Please let Kaldur be having a good dream and not a nightmare.

He can’t see anything around him except sand and water. No Kaldur. No monsters. Nothing.

Where is he? The thought barely passes through his brain before a figure walks out of an incoming wave. Aquaman comes out of the water and onto shore without stopping for a moment. Robin pauses to wonder if Aquaman ever really does that, just walks out of waves like it’s no big deal. After a second, Kaldur walks out too and rushes across the sand to catch up with his mentor ( ... )
