Gifts from the NW

Jan 15, 2007 10:56

Hey folks,

I'm going to India in 7 days and I want to bring some small gifts with me for Rachana's grandmother. I've come up with some Marionberry jam and perhaps some local honey but I wanted to see if anyone had any other thoughts for things to bring.

(My parents are brining some maple candy and such from the NE)

I wish it were farmers market

Just make sure to check the rules about what sorts of things you can and can't take into the country. For example, some foodstuffs are allowed into the US, and some aren't.

I like the idea of taking locally-made products. What about locally-produced tea and/or coffee?

Tea is a great idea. There are a few west coast teas that are very nice.

I think the jam and the honey are also good...I still buy most of my honey from Oregon. As to what else, I've been trying to think and coming up with blanks, simply because I can't think of non-perishables. There are lots of great things that are native, they just don't travel well.

which honey do you get? I'm not a honey expert, so any help on specifics would be helpful!

I have done a lot of buying from:

I love their Fireweed honey and their prices on honey stix can't be beat.

I suppose fish is out? The first thing that leaps to mind is salmon. There are nice packages of smoked salmon that shouldn't be a problem to bring.

Also, ask jillbertini about some ideas when she gets back on Wed.

Speaking of fish, this may sound odd, but according to Greg Atkinson, the very best canned tuna in the world comes from right here. "Pacific Northwest troll-caught albacore is the best tuna you can buy," he says. I like the tuna from Pelican Packers, which is available at PCC and, I think, at University Seafood and Poultry.

Hmm. Interesting. I had no idea. I'll try some and see. I've been somewhat craving tunafish sandwiches lately.

Yeah, fish is out. They are Hindu and while I suppose some of them might not stick to the dietary things strictly, my guess is that fish wouldn't go over well. But that is always my first thought for gifts from the NW too!

I have absolutely nothing useful to add to this thread, but I just wanted to say - yay, you're going to India in 4 days! I am so envious. Have a great, great, safe trip. Can't wait to hear all about it when you get back.

Local (or local-ish) wine?

My first thought as well, except they don't drink (Hindu)

Ah! That does make it more difficult; sadly, I know very little about the Hindu faith and its strictures. Something to remedy, certainly!

What about coffee? The NW is kinda famous for coffee, after all...
