“You can’t dance!” the older boy shouted as Seungyoon was standing awkwardly on the stage. Everyone was waiting for him to do something to show to their parents on the school festival next two weeks. It was the first rehearsal, when all the students - that the teachers thought they could sing or dance - gathered to decide what they would perform at the festival.

Seungyoon’s eyes were teary after he heard that, but he didn’t cry. He bit his lower lip to hold his tears, still standing awkwardly and daring to look at the older boy who said that he couldn’t dance.

“Lee Seunghoon! That’s not a very nice thing to say to your junior.” The teacher who supervised their rehearsal said to Seunghoon, who was glaring at Seungyoon.

Seunghoon didn’t respond. He looked away from Seungyoon and stared at the auditorium’s window. He was a 2nd grader while Seungyoon was a 1st grader. This was the first time he saw Seungyoon and he thought that the younger was really tiny and looked too weak.

“Miss…” Seungyoon said with shivering voice, he almost cried, but he managed to stay calm, ”I can’t dance. I can’t perform at the festival.”

“Seungyoon-ah, you don’t have to dance to perform, if you have something that you are better at, then, do that. I heard that you sing really well, Seungyoon, why don’t you sing?”

“Really?” Seungyoon wiped his tears that hanging on the edge of his eyes, a little smile decorating his face.

“Yes, Seungyoon,” the teacher answered softly.

“I can sing really well, Miss! I can perform at the festival!” The sad look was completely gone from the younger face as he said that, replaced with a wide smile.

“Of course, Seungyoon. Now, would you like to sing something for us first?” The teacher said again, ”look, your friends are waiting.”

Seungyoon looked at the other 7 kids around his age that were looking at him, except Seunghoon. They were all from 1st and 2nd grade. The older graders were having a separated rehearsal. Then his gaze stopped to Seunghoon, who was still looking through the auditorium window. He neither liked nor hated the older boy. He was even curious about what the older boy was thinking. He let out a little sigh and took a deep breath, started to sing a song.

Seunghoon still looked at the window, but he listened. He listened to the younger who was singing with a very good voice and with all his heart. He stayed still, refusing to turn to look at Seungyoon. But deep in his heart, there was a guilt for saying bad thing to Seungyoon. He promised to himself that he would apologize.

“Seungyoon-ah? You don’t bring your umbrella?” the teacher asked. They had finished the rehearsal and had to go home under the heavy rain.

Seungyoon shook his head. He pouted.

“Wait here. I’ll call your mother to pick you up, okay?” the teacher said.

“Mom is at work, Miss. She can’t pick me up.” Seungyoon pulled the teacher’s blouse.

“Is that so? I’ll call your mother to let her know that you finished with the rehearsal today. Don’t go home until the rain stopped, okay?” The teacher patted Seungyoon’s head, ”I’ll be back after I call your mother.” And she left.

Seungyoon turned around to look at the school’s field. He pouted as he watched the rain became heavier. Just then, someone came and poked his shoulder. He turned around and saw Seunghoon was standing there, offering a red umbrella to him.

“You can use my umbrella if you want. But I prefer you to stay here until the rain stops just like Miss Hyojin said.” Seunghoon said, avoiding the younger’s eyes.

“But… how about you, hyung?” Seungyoon asked. Unlike the older, he looked at Seunghoon intensively.

“I’ve got my raincoat,” Seunghoon replied, ”take the umbrella.”

Seungyoon took the umbrella but he didn’t open it.

Seunghoon was ready to leave when the younger tugged his raincoat. He turned back.

“Hyung…can you…can you just stay here?” Seungyoon asked slowly. His face reddened because of the cold air and also the blush.

“Why?” Seunghoon asked back.

“The rain is too heavy, hyung.” Seungyoon said, ”I want to wait until the rain stops, but I don’t like waiting alone.”

“You want me to stay so that you don’t have to wait alone?”

Seungyoon nodded, gripping the part of Seunghoon’s raincoat that he tugged tighter.

Seunghoon looked at the rain and frowned. He was not sure he could fine passing the heavy rain even by both the raincoat and the umbrella though. “Okay. I’ll stay here.”

Seungyoon smiled softly.

They sat down on the chair at the corridor. Both didn’t say anything. There was a long silence. Only the sound of the heavy rain been heard.

“I’m sorry.” Seunghoon suddenly said, letting out a sigh, still watching the rain.

Seungyoon turned his head and looked at the older.

“I’m sorry I made you upset earlier. I didn’t know that you sing really well.” Seunghoon continued, ”I can’t sing. I only can dance.”

“It’s okay, hyung.” Seungyoon replied.

“You may hate me for that.” Seunghoon sighed..

“I don’t hate you, hyung. You’re cool.” Seungyoon said as he smiled.

Seunghoon turned to look at the younger, looking confused, ”how am I cool?”

“My mom said, people who apologize for what they have done wrong are cool.” Seungyoon answered.

Seunghoon grinned, ”so you don’t hate me?”

“Of course not, hyung.”

Seunghoon ruffled the younger’s hair while smiling, ”thank you.” he chuckled.

The rain was not as heavy as before, but the two boys were still sitting and watching the rain. They didn’t want to go home yet. Seungyoon could feel the warmth from the older. At that moment, he thought that Seunghoon was not that bad. He was actually very nice.

***

Seungyoon got a ukulele from her mother when he started his 2nd grade of school. He really happy about it and couldn’t stop learning to play it. He even brought his ukulele to school so that he could show and play it for his friends. He couldn’t be happier when his friends liked his ukulele playing. They were watching him with fascinated look on their face, boys and girls.

That day, Seungyoon had to walk home alone because his classmate, who usually walked home with him, was sick and had to go home earlier. He played his ukulele as he walked, unaware that some 4th graders were waiting for him at the end of the street. They surrounded him when he walked closer to their waiting spot.

“Hey, Kang Seungyoon,” shouted one of the 4th grader. There were three of them.

Seungyoon stopped walking and looked up from his ukulele.

“You seem popular at school now even though you’re only a 2nd grader. What is that?” shouted the tallest among them, pointing at the ukulele, ”Is that what makes you popular now?”

Seungyoon didn’t answer. His chin was quivering as he tried not to cry. He held his ukulele tighter, almost looked like hugging it.

“If that what makes you popular,” the other 4th grader boy started to try to grab Seungyoon’s ukulele, ”can you lend it to us?”

Seungyoon held his ukulele even tighter, refusing to let it go.

“Come on, it won’t be long. We just want to play it once.” said the tallest boy.

A few minutes later, there was some sort of tug war of Seungyoon’s ukulele. Just then, another boy, with slightly shorter than the 4th graders but taller than Seungyoon, came up and stepped in between them. He pulled the ukulele away from the older boys and shielded Seungyoon’s body with his own. It was Seunghoon.

“Get away from him!” Seunghoon shouted.

Seungyoon couldn’t help but clung his little hands on the back of Seunghoon’s shirt. He was scared as hell. Seunghoon was actually really scared, too. But he tried to be strong for Seungyoon.

“Oh. This is another popular kid from the third grade, Lee Seunghoon.” the tallest boy exclaimed.

“The dancer.” said another, and the three of them laughed. They looked scarier in Seungyoon’s eyes.

“How dare you to fight us!” said the tallest boy again, ”we want your popular friend’s ukulele! Give it to us!”

“No!” Seunghoon shouted, ”leave us alone!”

The tallest boy was ready to grab the ukulele again when they heard the sound of some people walking towards their direction. The bullies gave up.

“Ugh! We don’t need that stupid ukulele anymore,” said one of them and they left.

Seunghoon made sure the three bullies were totally left and once he was sure, he turned his body to look at Seungyoon. The younger boy was biting his lower lip hard as he tried to hold his tears, but then he lost it. Suddenly, Seungyoon’s arm wrapped around him and he could feel his shirt started to wet because of the younger’s tears. Seungyoon’s face was buried against his shoulder.

“They had left, Seungyoon-ah. Everything’s okay now.” Seunghoon said and rubbed the younger’s back.

Once he calmed, Seungyoon let go off of Seunghoon and wiped the wet on his own face.

“You’re okay now?” Seunghoon asked carefully.

Seungyoon nodded. “Hyung…thank you. You saved me.” he said slowly, giving Seunghoon a little smile.

“No…they left because they heard some people walked towards here. Not because of me.”

“Is that so?”

Seunghoon nodded weakly,”I didn’t do anything.”

Seunghoon didn’t expect another hug but Seungyoon hugged him tightly once again. “You did so much for me, hyung! I’m happy you’re here!” Seungyoon said against Seunghoon’s shirt.

Seunghoon was speechless.

“You are the coolest person I ever met! I’ll tell my mother.” Seungyoon said as he tightened the hug and let go.

Seunghoon looked at Seungyoon in confusion as the younger looked intensively to his eyes while smiling ear to ear. Seungyoon was sincerely happy and thankful to him, and he couldn’t help but smiled back and ruffled Seungyoon’s hair.

“I don’t know what to say anymore except thank you. Thank you, Seungyoon.” Seunghoon said, ”I’m not as cool as you think I am.”

“No. Still you are.”

“Because your mom said that people who try to save someone are cool?”

“No. Because my mom said, people who don’t think that they are cool are the ones that actually the coolest.” Seungyoon said and smiled widely.

Seunghoon chuckled. “Thank you. Your mom must be the coolest person too. Want me to walk you home?”

Seungyoon nodded.

“Play the ukulele for me.” Seunghoon said as they started to walk.

“Okay, hyung!” Seungyoon replied happily and played his ukulele, even singing a little bit.

The next days, Seungyoon walked home with his classmate again. But there were some days that he walked home with Seunghoon just because he wanted to. And Seunghoon was never mind about it. They sometimes stopped by the playground, Seungyoon played his ukulele and Seunghoon danced. They somehow became close and inseparable. And Seungyoon liked it. He felt the happiest when Seunghoon was around.

Seunghoon could feel his body shivering as he watched the group before his group was performing on the stage. He was at the backstage of the kid’s dance contest, along with his teammate from his school, all of them were 5th graders, waiting for their turn to perform. Their parents were already left to sit at the audience seats.

When finally their turn to perform announced by the MC, Seunghoon and four of his teammates got up to the stage. They introduced themselves and performed after that. Their performance went well and the audience seemed to like it since the applause from them was really loud.

Seunghoon was sure his team would win the competition. He did his best. And he knew his teammates too. The five of them were smiling happily and satisfied with their performance until they watched the last group contestant performing. The last group performed really well with extra acrobatic moves that the other groups didn’t have.

Seunghoon couldn’t sincerely smile when his group announced as the third place. He even hoped at least they got the second place, but they didn’t.

Seunghoon and his teammates were still being loved by their family and their friends. They got ‘congratulations’ and hugs of what they had achieved. Seunghoon was slightly felt happier, but he was still upset. More to himself, because he was the one who lead his dance group.

“Hyung!” Seungyoon shouted as he ran towards Seunghoon and hugged him tight. His mother went to greet Seunghoon’s mother. ”Congratulation, hyung! You did your best!” he said while smiling.

“Seungyoon-ah…I’m third.” Seunghoon replied sheepishly and sighed.

Seungyoon let go off the hug,“What’s wrong with that?” he asked, tilting his head.

“That means I didn’t win.”

“But, you did your best!” Seungyoon said, almost jumped.

“And that’s important?”

“Of course, hyung! You were really cool earlier on stage! I don’t care if you win or not. I’m very happy to see you dance on the stage.” Seungyoon answered and his answer made Seunghoon blushed. “I believe hyung will be a successful dancer someday!” He hugged Seunghoon again.

Seunghoon smiled softly and hugged Seungyoon back.

“Hyung,” Seungyoon mumbled against Seunghoon’s shoulder, ”just remember that you’re still the coolest person I’ve ever met,”

Seunghoon chuckled, ”and why is that now?”

“Just because I think you are.” Seungyoon answered softly.

Seunghoon smiled, tightened the hug.

“Do you feel better now, hyung?” Seungyoon said once they separated.

“Yes. All because of you.” Seunghoon ruffled the younger’s hair as he smiled, ”thank  you.”

“Yay! Don’t ever feel upset anymore, okay, hyung? Whenever you feel upset, I’ll play a song on my guitar and sing for you, and you have to dance.” Seungyoon said. He had started to learn to play guitar, not only ukulele.

“I have to dance?”

“Yes. You said, dancing makes you feel better.”

“I said that?”

“Yes you said that, hyung.”

“Oh. Okay, then.” he shrugged.

At that moment, Seunghoon was really thankful that he had decided to offer his umbrella to Seungyoon on the day they met for the first time. Because he could find Seungyoon’s sincerity as the sweetest thing he had ever experienced. He wished it would be last forever.
