An Ethnotelephonic Study of Ol’ Dixie - based on the work of cultural sociologist Dr. John Shelton Reed, this map attempts to map the the cultural borders of the Old South based on a telephone-book count of businesses using the name Dixie in their names. Fascinating.

But given Florida's current state of Palms and Beaches, we don't bother remembering that it's tucked right into Dixieland.

Were were THEY during the War Between The States, I ask you?!

The northern parts of Florida were as Dixie as the rest of'em, with the slaves and plantations and all.
The southern parts, the ones that are closer to the popular image we have today, were mostly swamps and mostly empty. I don't think it started growing until the 20th century.
