the rocky road to primary school

With June's imminent arrival, J and I have embarked on that trial-by-fire journey that every Singaporean parent has to go through: registration for Primary One. The actual dates for registration run from July to August, but since we are overseas, our process begins slightly earlier because we need to scan and email all the relevant documents for ( Read more... )

I feel like very few parents really look forward to P1, or if they do, very few of them do it without a sense of ambivalence. I am sure Jo's reading will improve soon; what did the teachers suggest to help? The Bun's school uses the Jolly Phonics system and some of its resources were quite helpful when he was still learning letter sounds. I had to learn them too since I had to help him with reading.

Reading Eggs, which is a phonics/reading online game website for kids has also been very fun and helpful for us at home.

Was just asking around looking for mummies with kids going to the same school as Sean! Will be happy to share info with you if you need. I can imagine how stressful will be for Bun when he comes back!

Is Sean going to go to Foops' alma mater? (I'm just making a guess based on Foops' and J's connection!)

We're going to try to register The Bun at my alma mater because it's closer to where we live in Singapore and also because it is co-ed. I think we've got registration sorted but I'm really keen on finding out how parents are helping to prepare their kids for P1. A lot of it (the use of textbooks, canteen food, the concept of grades, etc) will probably be quite foreign to them and especially The Bun. It's a big milestone!
