Looks like The Bun has a new lovey in his life. It's a
grey tabby cat from Gund and we spotted it at an atrium sale at 112 Katong. He immediately zoomed in on it, but I didn't want to buy it because he already has his beloved Cat-cat at home. My mother saw him clinging onto it so tightly and gave in. She says that this could be his 'real' cat since Cat-cat is really, uh, a dog.
Backstory on Cat-cat: a stuffed dog (a beagle? a foxhound?) from Ikea, who used to be called Doggie but was named Cat-cat maybe a year-and-a-half ago. The Bun insists that it/he is a cat and it does all the usual cat things like meow, lick faces etc. Cat-cat accompanies The Bun everywhere when he's at home (we don't allow him to take it out with him because it'd get dirty or lost) and often acts as The Bun's alter-ego or scapegoat, depending on the situation.
We've been joking that Bao will grow up confused about the difference between cats and dogs because Cat-cat obviously looks like a dog but otherwise is in every other way a cat. That's why my mother bought him this new stuffed cat, so that we could re-invent Cat-cat as a dog. We'll see! Kids' minds work in funny ways.
According to The Bun, 'Kitty' is a girl and still very small so she needs to be protected and given milk to drink. Right after we bought it, The Bun clutched her tightly to him for the rest of the night. It was very cute to eavesdrop on him talking to Kitty and listening to Kitty's 'replies' in a funny little voice.
And later tonight, overheard just before The Bun got into bed:
The Bun: Were you sleeping on the shop shelf, Kitty?
Kitty: Yes, I was sleeping on the shop shelf.
The Bun: It's okay, my bed is softer. My blanket too.
Kitty: Okay, thank you.
I like that Kitty brings out his sweet and soft side, to counter his aggressive fighting Digimon obsession. One day my boy, hopefully in a few years, we'll get a real cat of our own to love and sleep with.
