This morning I had an odd dream, in which I was talking to someone of a religious bent, and I was commenting about how Jesus "stopped by and visited this eyelash here." The theist humored me, in my comment about how small and ordinary the earth is, in the grand scheme of things. I woke up shortly thereafter, and today I was thinking about if my ( Read more... )

Wouldn't that make said gods even that much grander that if they are so far away and we are so incredibly tiny, that are able to place all the care, attention and whatever that various religions believe they do, given the size of the universe and all that's in it?

Perhaps, but it's more that the belief in deities would bother with this speck speaks less of the deities, and more of our egocentrism.

When a baby is born, they do not have the concept that things they can't see can still exist. It's called object permanence, and why peekaboo is part of their development. As time goes on, they learn empathy, that the world does not revolve around them, etc. We, as a species, as a planet, should learn this ( ... )

I think the problem is it sounds like you're limiting the potential of these said beings. (Not that I'm promoting them, cause that'd just be silly.) The problem is, we're limited by the fact that as humans, we can't really multitask. We can flip back and forth between non-automatic things, but we can't, say, actively program code, paint a picture and write an in depth arguementative paper at the same time. We can bounce in between these things, but essentially, we're shifting focus constantly ( ... )

True, a polytheistic or eastern system is much more compatible, especially one that's earth-based. Various deities handle small aspects, and things like river spirits arise from the planet itself, mooting the issue of the surrounding void.

In the case of a single deity, it is possible that such an infinite being could juggle everything at once. I'm having more an issue with monotheistic sects that claim to be 'the chosen ones', or otherwise insist that said infinite being would be focusing exclusively on earth.
