Because some people have made some interesting observations recently and I'm curious.
Go ahead and spread this around?

i want to clarify two things:

1. this does not apply to YOUR fic alone. (i.e., i do not think your fic sucks. XD)
2. often i will not comment if the fic is old or if the author isn't responding to the other comments. that is one thing that peeves me off because if i take the time to comment, the author should take the time to acknowledge it, even if it's just a thank you/i'm glad you liked it.

i wish there was a way to use counters that would only count once per ip, because honestly i am more interested in who reads than who comments.

:D

Re:
1. Got it. The poll was intended for general use and not just my fic, so yup. All good.
2. I can understand the second point if you know a person doesn't respond. What do you do for a new author, though? If the fic has only been up for a day or two and the author hasn't responded to comments yet, do you comment or not? (maybe they don't ever respond, or maybe they just haven't had time yet? who knows) As for the first one, that makes me curious. If you are re-reading an old fic you've already commented on, I can see not commenting again (even though sometimes I do that anyway). But if you're reading something for the first time, why would you not comment just because it's old? *inquiring mind wishes to know*

I am sometimes very blatant about tracking. Once per IP. Gotta love the dragons. ;D

mostly it's an already-known thing, like if i've read her fic before and not been responded to or if i'm really late to it for a "new" (to me) author, at least a month.

date-wise old. i tend not to comment on older fics unless they are EPIC, especially if i don't know the author, but then again i don't usually comment at all for the reasons i mentioned above, so.

those dragons seem like too much work. XD is there a centralized location to look at ALL of them or something?

Hmm. Maybe it IS different by fandom (I wouldn't know, 'cause I'm only in just one). The long and/or meaningful comments are definitely more satisfactory, personally, but I'd still rather get a ton of "yay, love!" comments than none at all. It's rather disheartening to put something out there and get silence in return. Because if no one is reading, why bother to post (and no comments just seems like no one is reading)?

The people who say they'd prefer only the concrit... do they GET a billion comments? Because if they're already GETTING a billion "win!" comments, then they KNOW people are reading, and thus might be more inclined to be annoyed just about their email boxes flooded with comment notices or something, but still.

*totally curious*

Usually, my lack of comments is due to the fic being old... or my weird complex about making contact with people I think are ridiculously cool on the internet. I am getting better about this, I think! It feels like once I establish a kind of rapport with an author, I'm more comfortable commenting because I don't feel like such a loser? THIS IS ALL JUST MY WEIRD ISSUES THOUGH. /rambles

Issues... well. But I wonder if it's not just you? I'm starting to think a lot of people feel awkward commenting to authors they don't know well or think are "cool." I can't say I understand it, but it at least helps to know that people might feel that way.

Also, why not comment on old fic?

It seems like a lot of people, at least in some fandoms, don't turn on comment alerts, so they wouldn't ever get the comment even if I left one. Either that, or it might be something they look on as an old shame (this seems pretty common in RPF fandoms) and don't want to be reminded of.

I know I'm being a total hypocrite - I'd love people to comment on some of my older fic, or just for people to comment more at all - but somehow I can't get over my mental blocks. /resolves to work harder at this

I admit that I'm not thrilled with some of MY older stuff, but hey. If someone's still enjoying it somewhere, it makes me happy.

Hmm. *ponders*

Considering my entire life revolves around learning a second language (and kind of sucking at it) right now, I completely understand.

You should never feel sorry for trying to communicate in a language that isn't your native one.

Translating into or WRITING in languages that aren't your native one... now that I find a bit strange, unless the person is highly fluent, which happens sometimes.

I can understand not wanting to comment if you don't feel comfortable communicating in the writer's language. But if someone is able to read a fic in the language, I'm sure they also know how to say "thank you" or something similar. ;)

Thanks for commenting. I hadn't thought of the language barrier issue. :)
