It was a few days later when KiBum, HyungJoon and HyunJoong found themselves taking an unexpected break in Acacia City. The second HyungJoon had seen the advertisements for a Pokemon Contest in a couple days, he'd been ecstatic. Then HyunJoong had said he had something he needed to do in the area and disappeared, and they had no choice but to stop.

Which was fine with KiBum, it gave him a chance to battle against the other trainers in the area, maybe enter a competition and win them some extra cash. You could never have too much money when you backpacked from city to city. He'd watch HyungJoon compete, of course, but the preparation bored him silly. Following HyunJoong was never an option; he came and went without warning and they were never sure exactly what he was doing. He'd wandered into their group much the same way, and sometimes KiBum wondered if he'd just wander away for good without saying anything to either of them.

"Good fight," he grinned, accepting the betting money from his opponent. Machop sat on the ground beside him, barely winded.

"Yeah, you too," the other trainer rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "Guess I need more practice."

"Nah, your strategy was good, just gotta make sure your Pokemon watches it's back better," KiBum said, counting the money before stuffing it into his pocket and slinging his bag over his shoulder. He'd already beaten a couple trainers lingering around the park area, Machop not even breaking a sweat.

"Not bad," called a voice. Looking around, KiBum blinked to see a young man his age sitting on a nearby boulder.

"Thanks," KiBum called back. Seeing a pokeball in the man's hand, he grinned. "Hey, you a trainer?"

"Sorta," was the reply, a wide smile playing across the other man's face.

"Cool! Want to battle?" KiBum asked. He'd give Machop a break though, let one of his other Pokemon have some fun.

"I dunno..." The stranger pouted. "You look tough, I don't have much cash to lose."

"Then we won't play for cash, just for fun." KiBum unclipped another pokeball from his belt. "What about it?"

"Fun? Well, okay, I guess." The other man hopped off the boulder, walking towards him. "What's your name?"

"KiBum, yours?"

"SeungHyun, but you can call me Kevin," the stranger replied. The name sounded vaguely familiar, like KiBum had heard it before.

"Kevin? Well, let's get started," KiBum grinned, tossing his pokeball into the air. "Go, Hitmontop!"

With a flash of light one of his favorite Pokemon appeared, landing in a crouch. Kevin blinked with wide eyes. "Wow, you have a Hitmontop? Cool!"

"Thanks," KiBum chuckled, watching with a smile. "Well?"

Kevin looked down at the pokeball in his hand. "Guess it's up to him then." He tossed the pokeball into the air. "Go!" A flash of light revealed...

...A Hoppip.

KiBum, expecting something tougher (and bigger), stared. "Ah...cool," he managed a smile, pouting inside. He'd hoped for a challenge. Looks like he'd picked a fight with a new trainer who still thought level 10 was strong. Hoppip barely came up to Hitmontop's knee, including the giant leaves on it's head.

"He is cool, huh?" Kevin grinned, earning a cheerful 'Hoppip!' from his Pokemon.

"Yeah...why don't you go first?" KiBum might as well let the guy have a chance.

"You sure? Okay," Kevin shrugged, before grinning widely. "Hoppip, use giga drain!"

KiBum's eyes widened; giga drain wasn't a beginner move.

With a cry the Hoppip darted forward, spinning around as beads of energy flew up from Hitmontop to be absorbed by his opponent. Hitmontop staggered, grunting in pain.

"Hitmontop, rapid spin!" KiBum ordered. Doing a handstand, the Pokemon started to spin on it's head faster and faster until it was only a blur, rushing at Hoppip.

Kevin grinned. "Stun spore!" Hoppip floated out of the way, leaving a cloud of yellow spores in his wake. Hitmontop couldn't avoid them in time, plowing right into them. With a grunt it fell over, skidding to a stop paralyzed.

"What the...Hitmontop, use hi jump kick!" KiBum yelled. He'd made a big mistake...underestimating his opponent. The Hoppip didn't move like a low-level Pokemon, and Kevin hadn't stopped smiling.

Climbing back to his feet, Hitmontop shook off the spores before leaping at the Hoppip, one leg swinging out in a powerful kick.

"Hoppip, meet him with a Return!"

The two Pokemon collided head-on with an echoing bang. KiBum's eyes were wide as he watched Hoppip land lightly on the ground a few feet away. Hitmontop wasn't so lucky, hitting the ground with a thud. It was unconscious.

"...How..."

Kevin chuckled, one arm out. Hoppip floated over and landed on his shoulder. "That was a good battle!"

Snapping out of it, KiBum blinked repeatedly before grinning. "Uh, y-yeah! Wow, I haven't seen a Pokemon that good in...well, ever I think. I didn't know a Hoppip could be so strong."

"Any Pokemon can be strong if you train it right," Kevin said, walking over to him as KiBum recalled Hitmontop to the pokeball. "Well, except maybe Magikarp." He held out his hand.

KiBum clasped the other man's hand and shook it. "Yeah...great battle. Maybe you could give me some pointers? Did you use any items on him?"

"No, we've just been through a lot together," Kevin chuckled, looking at his Hoppip. "Take care of your Pokemon, and they'll take care of you. That's all I can say really, there's no magic formula."

"Ah." KiBum pouted. "Well, want to get something to eat?" He rather liked this Kevin guy, he looked like a pushover but was KiBum so wrong about that.

"Sorry, I have to be somewhere," Kevin smiled sadly. "Maybe we'll run into each other again one day."

"Maybe," KiBum nodded, watched as the younger man backed up. "See you around then."

"See you," Kevin grinned, turning and leaving. KiBum watched him go, not moving.

"Beaten by a Hoppip," mused a voice in KiBum's ear and he yelped, turning around to see HyunJoong standing behind him.

"When did you get here?"

"Just in time to see the finishing move," HyunJoong chuckled, hands in his pockets. "Hope you didn't lose too much money on that."

"Nah, he didn't want to play for bets...which I think was a mercy on me," KiBum sighed. "Wonder who he was."

"Did you get a name?"

"Yeah, Kevin."

"Kevin?" That had caught the attention of a group of trainers arriving in the park area. "The Kevin is here? Woo SeungHyun?"

"Uh...yeah? You just missed him," KiBum blinked. He watched the two girls in the group squeal before demanding to know which direction he'd gone. KiBum pointed, and they all took off. "...What was that about?"

HyunJoong smirked, shaking his head. "You don't know?"

"No," KiBum blinked at him.

"He's one of the Elite Four."
