code c: beginning

Chanyeol remembers the blinding lights flashing at him, through the splotches of red. It’s beautiful, Chanyeol thought, and he doesn’t mind dying in this manner.

“Hello?” a soft melody trembles from afar, Chanyeol squints his eyes hard as the figure gets closer.

“Wake up.”

An angel? Chanyeol’s vision slowly fades out, with the face of a bright light imprinted in his memory.

Something inside of him awakens.

As the light turns to dark, the red dots seep into his skin and it stretches. Chanyeol feels an itch throbbing at the back of his throat. A dry sensation spreads in his mouth as his stomach quivers, his tongue grows heavier as his guts churn.

Chanyeol’s eyes fly open.

A smile greets him.

“Welcome back.”

A smile with blood dripping from the lips, a smile of the devil. A pair of red eyes blink at him, and crimson mixes with the sound of his new heart, beating stronger than ever.

Chanyeol had never felt so alive.

code b: beginning

When Baekhyun watches Chanyeol, the new recruit, fling his lanky arm at Jongin clumsily, he swallows hard. Jongin moves away swiftly, and Chanyeol falls to the ground a loud thud. Jongin sighs deeply as he crosses his arms together, eyeing the at the giant skeptically.

“Try again, Park. You’re not doing well.”

Baekhyun has a problem.

“Give me a break, you’re too fast!” Chanyeol whines as he lies on his back, panting heavily. “We’ve been at this for hours.”

Baekhyun can’t help but notice the way the sweat drips down Chanyeol’s forehead, the way his damp ruby hair cradles his face, like vines wrapping around a masterpiece. The way his chest deflates with every release of his shuddery breath, Baekhyun’s heart quivers. The sight of Chanyeol’s lips trembling makes it hard for Baekhyun to look away.

Jongin rolls his eyes before he pulls Chanyeol up. “Well, let’s see what Baekhyun thinks.”

Chanyeol and his eager eyes greet Baekhyun, Chanyeol and his blinding smile as he sprints towards him, Chanyeol and his sturdy hands, waving at him. Baekhyun wonders how they’d feel around his body-

No.

Baekhyun shakes his head before he lets out an exasperated sigh.

The problem is Park Chanyeol.

“He’s new. Don’t be too hard on him.”

With that, Baekhyun quickly turns away from Chanyeol’s piercing stare and walks off, ignoring the lingering of his infatuation.

code c: lessons

The lessons are tough, especially when you’re still reeling from the fact that you are a ghoul. The lessons often felt like a push into a tub of ice water, the sting of being surrounded by something you detest. The lessons are a reminder that you have changed and ‘normal’ will never be the same for you.

Chanyeol hates the lessons.

“We ghouls have excellent senses. For example, just by the volume of the person’s footsteps, we can tell their mass. I’m sure you can develop those senses soon enough. After all, it’s part of you.”

“Right,” Chanyeol mumbles, icing the new formed bruises he had gotten from combat practice.

“Someday, you might be quicker than Jongin. Although that might take forever.”

“I hate you.” Chanyeol makes a face at Baekhyun, earning a pinch on his ear. Chanyeol yelps before he starts flailing his arms at Baekhyun who dodges them well.

Baekhyun is strangely like a haven he can hide in, in the midst of his rapid change. Chanyeol feels at ease, more humane, like he used to. Baekhyun is the block to the colour of blood flashing in his head, the filter that makes food less nauseating and grotesque.

Sure, the lessons of how to be a ghoul are a dread, a pain he would rather not face every day, a reminder of the things he has lost.

But Baekhyun isn’t that bad.

So maybe the lessons are a tad bit more bearable.

code b: lessons

“What is a Kagune?” Chanyeol asks after having watched a duel Baekhyun had with Jongin. Chanyeol’s eyes never left the glowing red sprouting out of his back. Strangely, Baekhyun doesn’t have a single bit of insecurity as he basks under his gaze. It felt good.

“They are ‘RC cells’ which have been released outside the body. RC cells are just like blood but they can be as solid as teeth. We call them liquid muscles,” Baekhyun explains as he takes a towel to wipe the dripping sweat and blood off his face.

“But if they are muscles, shouldn’t they be tender?”

“Think of the muscles being woven the same way steel wires are. A normal bullet can’t pass through it. That’s why the CCG officers need the quinque to handle us ghouls.”

Baekhyun wonders if he could do that with his heart, because he really wishes his heart was as solid as steel, safe from the unknowing grasp of Park Chanyeol. Chanyeol nods thoughtfully before his lips curve into a wide and very endearing smile.

Unfortunately, Baekhyun has no control over his palpitating heart. It softens rapidly, with every single second when he is with Park Chanyeol.

“The cells are only released through our skin by choice or when we are excited. The control of emotions and hunger is vital to concealing our identity. But if we consume human food, it affects the health of our kakuhou so don’t ever forget to puke them out if you eat them. It’s dangerous for us to be weak,” Baekhyun reminds, both to Chanyeol and himself.

When the smile on Chanyeol’s face gets brighter, Baekhyun has never never felt so vulnerable before.

This is bad, Baekhyun thinks when he realises how deep he has sunk.

code c: band

Chanyeol needed a perfect cover for his new identity, a role to smudge the rugged ghoul edges and smoothen them into the humane curves that everyone accepts.

“For us to blend into the society, we need to have a mask we never take off. If we’re suspected for a moment, we are done for. So we have to conduct ourselves seamlessly enough that we don’t become too involved. We basically live our lives accepting that risk.”

“Why?”

“Whenever I’m near a human, my pulse races. It’s hard to explain why, but that excitement is enjoyable.”

Chanyeol wonders if Baekhyun knows about the way his pulse dances whenever he is near.

“My band needs a guitarist,” Baekhyun grins as he leans closer to Chanyeol. “So, you and me, as we conquer the music scene with our angsty rock and sweaty charisma. What do you think of it?”

You and me, Chanyeol really like the sound of it. So much that he agrees without hesitation.

code b: band

This is a mistake.

Baekhyun sighs for the millionth when he sees Chanyeol bending over to the crowd of squealing girls, letting them run their filthy human fingers over his body. Baekhyun scowls at that, and the screams get louder.

Ugh, teenagers and their raging hormones.

Suddenly, the taste of spotlight is bitter and filled with the horrid colour of green. Wrapping his fingers tightly around the stand as his nails dig into his palm, Baekhyun screams his anger into the microphone. With the raging melody blasting his ears, Baekhyun rinses away the infuriating sight from the the corner of his eyes and narrows his vision to the blinding flash of light.

He’s fine, he tells himself as his eyes get sore from the light. He’s fine, he assures his souring heart as he erases the memory of lipstick stains and trails of scratch lines.

Chanyeol makes his way back to his usual spot, the space next to him, and rests his back against Baekhyun’s, strumming through the strings as he presses his head on Baekhyun’s. Baekhyun is lost for a moment, lost in the moment of theirs.

This is the sweet spotlight he has dreamt of, the exact spotlight he has wanted so badly.

When their eyes and smiles meet, Baekhyun guesses that this isn’t that bad afterall.

code c: dinner

Food was and is a nightmare.

How enticing the scent of freshly cut meat is, the sweetness of the blood pooling at the limp corpse. Chanyeol finds it hard to resist, but the sight of the dead eyes, the strained features of the victim’s face, it all makes it wrong to even want a bite of it.

“Clearing the corpses of suicide victims, this is our way of getting food. It’s the most harmless way of obtaining the meat we need,” Jongin explains as he kneels next to the corpse, muttering a quick prayer before he starts shifting the body into the bag. Chanyeol stares blankly, as his stomach rumbles and his heart crumbling.

“Is it really alright?” Chanyeol asks and Jongin stops.

“You’re a softie, just like Baekhyun.”

“Baekhyun?”

“That’s why he’s never on food duty. We won’t get a single meat whenever he’s on.”

“Oh,” Chanyeol says when he remembers the way Baekhyun stares at the plate of meat, the way he closes his eyes with every bite, the hint of guilt whenever he says thanks for a meal.

code b: dinner

Baekhyun hates himself.

The way his body needs the sickening flavour of human red and the way he loves the richness dripping down his throat with every bite. He enjoys the burning sin sinking onto his tongue yet he is choked by the guilt riding on his heart.

It’s wrong yet he loves it.

He can’t really forgive himself for it.

Chanyeol slips a hand on his thigh, squeezing it gently when Baekhyun has been staring at the plate for too long. Baekhyun is tossed back to reality, immediately reminded of the one thing he wants so badly but can never have because it’s the wrongest wrong of all the wrongs in his life.

code c: ending (for now)

Chanyeol thinks being a ghoul isn’t that bad.

Especially when he has a band rocking to his sick riffs and a very special person staying by him, no matter how shitty a ghoul he is. To Chanyeol, he is someone who is more human than he is and the ghoulest ghoul he’d ever know. He loves the way Baekhyun’s eyes brighten up whenever he talks about being in the midst of deadly humans, or whenever he explains the anatomy of a ghoul and demonstrates combat moves.

Although there are times when Chanyeol wants to tangle his calloused fingers with the long slender ones, or bury his head in the crook of his neck whenever he’s tired. Maybe he will get a chance to kiss the frown off the lips, but for now, flattening the crease between the brows with lame jokes is good enough.

From what they are right now, Chanyeol’s fine with it.

All is good.

Maybe it will get better when he’s a better ghoul.

code b: ending (for now)

Baekhyun had never thought a mere human would do things to his heart.

And he is afraid.

But whenever he sees that smile, Baekhyun forgets. He forgets about the pain and the ache his identity had left, and for a moment, the monster that sprouts out of his back becomes an ethereal sight.

Yes, Chanyeol is human and his ghoul side is as weak as a dying candle, but so what? Chanyeol is Chanyeol and that’s all that matters. The way he tries to change for the sake of the people around him, the way he bears the painful aftermath of a tiring duel with Jongin, the way he insists on another round, it all makes Baekhyun reckon he’s the bestest being in the entire world.

Wait.

No.

No.

No.

That’s not how it should be.

That’s not how things should be.

Baekhyun suddenly wakes up from the dream he’s been floating in and he suddenly recalls the reason why Chanyeol’s here and why he needs to be by him.

Joonmyeon.

And he pours in the void that should have been there from the very beginning.
