Thirteenth Sue

Name: Thirteenth Sue
Fandom: Bleach - Anime/Manga
Problems: Over Idealization
Beware These Tropes:
- Fixer Sue- Some don't like the fact that Ukitake doesn't have a second, so they create one for him. However, does he really need one. Some, go so far, as to go and make it so that she is already his second, before Aizen's fake death.
- Sailor Earth - It is an easy place to add a mondo cool character.

This Mary Sue or Gary Stu is from the fandom Bleach. They are also in the thirteenth division. There rank just so happens to be lieutenant. The fact that Ukitake has no fukutaicho is convenient, so it seems. However, one should ask a few questions.

Why is it Ukitake’s not yet replaced his second?

One of the reasons is, he could still be mourning the death of his previous lieutenant. With that train of thought, doesn’t it sound a bit cruel to force one on him?

A second reason is, the person he wants to replace Kaien with, he has already promised her brother, that he would not place her in a seated position. Yes, it could be possible that Rukia is whom he wants as his new second.

The third reason is, he hasn’t found the right person to replace Kaien. So then, why can’t one write the replacement that is the right person.

Truth of the matter, this is a form of idealization isn’t it? Mary Sues are over idealized. But some idealization, in some cases, is all right, isn’t it?

Where does this character come from?

Nowhere. Seriously, randomly showing up from nowhere, doesn’t cut it. Captains choose their lieutenants, so the person should at least have been heard of. So, try not to give a story of simply appearing.

Also, the character should be rather well known to Ukitake. He doesn’t pick his lieutenant just because they are skilled. He knows their personality, and that he can trust them.

Which brings one to the fact that one has to ask, why would he pick this person, over a canon character he does know, like Rukia, or one of his two current third seats? That is the kind of personal relationship, they have to contend with.

Why pick a fukutaicho while Soul Society is trying to counter Aizen?

Truth of the matter, this is the worse logical time to choose a new lieutenant. It might seem the best, to add strength to the Gotei Thirteen, however, time and energy is best spent in other pursuits.

Why not then, have the person already in the position, before Aizen’s betrayal? Problem is, the character serves then as a tag-a-long character. When a character is a tag-a-long character, then what purpose do they really serve?

What then, is the reason for your OC (original character), to have this rank? Is it truly a plot device that is needed, or is it something that is simply there, to make your OC more special, then they already are.

Not saying that it is impossible to come up with a storyline, where the rank is important, but these kinds of storylines are rare. Most of the time I see a captain and lieutenant used, it is simply to make the character more special.

One also wonders, why is this special position, being sidelined to a non-canon character?

Feel free to suggest thirteenth squad fukutaicho fanfics, however… keep in mind, the characters need to be kept in character, the storyline rather believable. This is in truth, possibly one of the harder fanfics to pull off, without having a Sue character.
