Kilts and romance

Feb 12, 2002 15:55

Moonmama posed an interesting question in her journal about the attraction to Scottish men in romance novels.
Part of this is posted in her journal, but I took this farther in depth, my theories follow after the cut.

In one of the links they imply that the Irish who "started" Scotland got rid of all the Picts who were there before. Not so. It is the combining of those Irish with the picts which created the Scots.

Not all sources are totally reliable. I included several on the history of kilts. I have been surprised to find the differences that are noted in "historical facts." I'm often amazed by people that claim to know Roman and Celtic history that respond with, "Boudicca who?"

I am aware that the Picts were one of the oldest tribes in what is now Scotland. As I recall, it was the Picts and their blue paint that scared Hadrian into building his wall.

I was so excited to read this...
I have always love the story of Rizzio and Mary Queen... I spent 2 days walking around and staring at the her ruin of a castle... You have taken me back there... and provided wonderful links!!
*Was in Scotland in 1986... I was still in highschool... and being the hopeless romantic that I am... still hold in *my heart* that they were lovers!

Thanks for taking me back... and making me remember!

I'm glad this brought back good memories, Stacy.

I've never been to Scotland, but always wanted to go there, Ireland, and Wales.

I have been to England twice and had the eeriest sense of deja vu at the Tower of London. I keep wanting to write about that in detail, but haven't yet.

Well... wasn't Casanova an Italian?

Actually... one of my high school crushes was Italian. Maybe that's enough said even though it was unrequited.

Sooo.... that's what you look like, eh?

That's me, early on Christmas morning a couple of years ago. I'd had no coffee yet and my sister-in-law was decorating me with bows as she unwrapped presents. The things I endure from the women in my life...[He said mock-dramatically]

Someone we both know and love says it's her favorite picture of me, so I -had- to use it. ;)

Could be worse... someone could have unwrapped you and dragged out blue ribbon for a picture.. Oh, wait... you're Italian, not a Scot, no kilt... there goes that idea!! ::fleeeeeeeeeeeeeee::
