In this season of peace, I probably should not be discussing violence, but the post of a friend prompted a few thoughts. If you are offended by discussions about guns and second amendment rights do not go past the cut.
Some could argue that the possession of the gun puts the criminal mind into the mindset of having the power of life and death in his hand, of being able to kill a man from a distance with little risk of personal harm in doing so

While handguns are readily not available to the general public in most Western European countries, hunting rifles are. Show me one rifle worth its salt that can't make someone just as dead as a handgun and I'll tell you their no handguns ban works

Handguns aren't readily available to the public, but let's face it, if you want it you can get it. And even if handguns aren't available, you're right rifles are, and can be modified to be very well concealed if need be. And to quote a friend of my father's back in England when his chief found him asleep in his box, "Why, I wasn't sleeping, I was just inspectin' me eyelids f'r holes." But even with that, I'd still feel safer with a Bobby than I would with American police

well said!! i agree with you 100%! and being from texas...well needless to say nearly everyone here in this very small town carries a gun! some find that commical and make jokes about us "texans" being gun carrying, crazy, backwards, hickified people...but i say...i protect my family and myself and will continue to do so! love the saying your used...rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6!!!
I have heard a lot of those jokes, but I'm wondering how many of those joking would have to think twice about using a gun if the life of a loved one was threatened.
