I LOVE almost every word of this! The only part I would like you to reconsider is perhaps this one: "Do I insist my kids learn certain things? You betcha. Basic math, reading, spelling, grammar, history, and geography- those are the things they need to know to not be a useless slug in the world.”
I would beg to differ that there are some amazing good and hard working people in the world who are perhaps making it a better place and have amazing integrity who may indeed not be great at even “the basics”...and that’s okay too! I’m going to have my kids do the basics too, mainly because I”m a total victim of the system...but I certainly know that my knowledge of geography and history are MINIMAL (even though I’m a college grad) and I turned out ok :) Thanks so much for this amazing article!
