“I’m sorry,” Dad sighed, “but this gum isn’t coming out. I’m gonna have to cut your hair.”
“Don’t cut it, Daddy,” Mom liked Dean’s hair a little long, not girly-long, but not boy-short, either. The idea of cutting it brought tears to his four-year-old eyes.
“Stop crying, Dean.” Dad wrapped a towel around his neck. “You’re a big boy now.”
“Yes, sir.”
Desperate for his dad’s approval, Dean blinked away his tears as the buzzer removed the last physical trace of his mother’s love from his head.
He kept his hair short from then on and never chewed bubblegum again.
